Skull-femoral traction and vertebral osteotomies for severe rigid scoliosis with trunk imbalance.

This study aimed to explore skull-femoral traction and posterior vertebral column resection (PVCR) for the treatment of severe rigid scolios … respectively (P > .05). The duration of skull-femoral traction was 24 days (range, 14-39 days). The operative time was 521 ± 101 and 679 ± 443 minutes, respectively (P < .05). The amount of intraoperative blood loss was 987 ± 446 and 5961 ± 3214 mL, respectively (P < .05). The number of resected vertebrae was 0.4 ± 0.3 vs 1.1 ± 0.6 (P < .05). The groups were fol …

Neoaortic outcomes after the arterial switch operation: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The arterial switch operation has become the treatment of choice for neonates with transposition of great arteries. AIM: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to summarize the current evidence regarding neoaortic root dilatation and aortic valve insufficiency as long-term outcomes after the arterial switch operation, and to identify associated risk factors. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane databases was conducted for human studies published in English or French until May 2024. RESULTS: Out of 1480 identified records, 80 studies were included i

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study compares surgical and oncological outcomes in patients with Crohn's disease (CD)-related colorectal ca … ht (17.7%), transverse (4.7%), left colon (15.9%), and rectum (61.7%). CD patients exhibited longer operative times, higher pT stages, and 2.60 times the odds of postoperative complications (p = 0.03). Overall and disease-free survival were similar. For stage III, 54 patients were matched (57.4% male, mean age 54 years, 46.3% with ASA score 3). The cancer site d …

Efficacy and safety of piecemeal submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection for giant esophageal leiomyoma.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Giant esophageal leiomyoma usually requires a thoracotomy or thoracoscopic surgery, which is more invasive than an endoscopic treatment. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of piecemeal submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection (P-STER) for giant leiomyoma originating from the muscularis propria (MP) layer of the esophagus. METHODS: This is a retrospective study. Patients with giant esophageal leiomyoma (transverse diameter ≥ 3 cm) who underwent P-STER were enrolled from November 2012 to May 2023. Clinical data and results were investigated.

Surgical outcomes of single-port vs multi-port laparoscopic hysterectomy for endometrial cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the surgical outcomes in patients with endometrial cancer who underwent either single-port laparoscopic hysterectomy (SPLH) or multi-port laparoscopic hysterectomy (MPLH). METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature search from the earliest records available up to May 2023. The databases searched included PubMed, Embase, ClinicalTrials.gov, and the Cochrane Library. RESULTS: A total of 12 studies were included in the analysis. Both the SPLH and MPLH groups had similar operative times (MD = -4.27, 95% CI [-35.75, 27.22], p = 0.98), conversion rates (od…

Comparative Efficacy and Acceptability of Endoscopic Methods for Rectal Neuroendocrine Neoplasms with Low Malignant Potential: A Network Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Although endoscopic resection is an effective treatment of rectal neuroendocrine neoplasms (R-NENs) with low malignant potential, there is no consensus on the most recommended endoscopic method. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and acceptability of different endoscopic treatments for R-NENs with low malignant potential. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched databases for studies on treatments of R-NENs using endoscopic resection. These studies comprised techniques such as endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), modified endoscopic mucos

Single Center Neurosurgical Outcomes and Trends in Endoscopic Endonasal Resection of 297 Sellar/Suprasellar Tumors Stratified by Duration of Neurosurgical Career.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery (EETS) is a common treatment for sellar and suprasellar tumors. While endoscopic training has improved over the years and formal fellowship training is now broadly available, the operative nuances of EETS conjectures the existence a learning curve as a neurosurgeon matures with experience. We aim to evaluate operative outcomes of 3 different experience levels of neurosurgeons over time at a single institution. METHODS: We reviewed all adult patients who underwent EETS at Loyola University Medical Center by 3 early career, 1 mi

Robotic-Assisted Versus Laparoscopic Approach for Treatment of Acute Cholecystitis in Children.

Introduction: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (Lap-C) is the standard of care for patients requiring cholecystectomy in the acute setting. Although robotic-assisted cholecystectomy (RA-C) performance has increased, utilization in the acute setting has not been widely reported. We describe the feasibility of RA-C for pediatric patients undergoing acute inpatient cholecystectomy. Methods: A single institutional retrospective review of patients receiving RA-C while admitted for acute cholecystitis and/or choledocholithiasis (June 2017-June 2022) was compared with a matched cohort who underwent tradi

Safety and efficacy of endoscopic submucosal dissection with gel immersion technique for superficial esophageal neoplasms.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Gel immersion (GI) endoscopy provides a good visual field in endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD); however, its clinical outcomes are poorly understood. This study aimed to compare the treatment outcomes between esophageal gel immersion endoscopic submucosal dissection (GI-ESD) and conventional ESD (C-ESD) to determine the safety and efficacy of GI-ESD. METHODS: The data of 71 consecutive patients who underwent esophageal ESD between April 2021 and March 2023 at a Japanese tertiary center were retrospectively reviewed. GI was achieved using an additional irrigation tube.
