PURPOSE: The aim of this work was to present a clinical picture of congenital defects in the anterior and posterior segment of the eye and coexisting systemic developmental anomalies in a group of children during the infantile period.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis in a group of 1507 infants seen at our outpatient ophthalmology clinic in 2006-2010. Attention was focused on case histories of nine children (0.6%) with congenital defects of the eye. A routine ophthalmologic examination was done and photographs of the anterior and posterior segment of the eye were arc…

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Glaucoma, a chronic non-communicable disease, and leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide is a public health problem in Nigeria, with a prevalence of 5.02% in people aged ≥40 years. The purpose of this nationwide survey was to assess Nigerian ophthalmologists' practice patterns and their constraints in managing glaucoma.
STUDY DESIGN: Ophthalmologists were sent a semistructured questionnaire on how they manage glaucoma, their training in glaucoma care, where they practice, their access to equipment for diagnosis and treatment, whether they use protocols and the

In this case report, a 33-year-old pregnant woman with migraine and visual aura complained of headache, nausea, and blurred vision. Clinically, she presented with bilateral dilated and fixed pupils, ptosis, and tearing. She was erroneously diagnosed as having a migraine attack, but after referral to an ophthalmological department she was diagnosed with bilateral acute angle closure. At one-year follow-up her visual acuity was normalized but the severe visual field defects affected her daily activities and prevented her from having a driving licence.

We present a case of a 61-year-old woman with an atypical non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NA-AION) as a unique manifestation of COVID-19. Furthermore, the patient worsened after Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine administration. Our findings suggest that NA-AION could result from microangiopathic/thrombotic events that may occur during SARS-CoV-2 infection and/or vaccination against COVID-19. This report sheds light on possible ophthalmologic complications of COVID-19.

Botulinum toxin (BoNT) was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1989 for facial movement disorders and strabismus, but since that time its indications have been expanding beyond neurologic and ophthalmologic disorders. This article is a narrative review of the therapeutic use of BoNT in tremors, dystonia, sialorrhea, bladder and other autonomic symptoms, levodopa-induced dyskinesia and other problems occuring in the setting of parkinsonism. Though FDA approval is lacking for some of these indications, expert experiences have shown that BoNT is often beneficial in

Cutis verticis gyrata (CVG), characterized by cerebriform overgrowth of the scalp, is rarely observed in congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN). We describe a 13-year-old male with autism and a large CMN of the scalp with numerous satellite nevi whose scalp nevus exhibited evolution with poliosis and CVG. Given the potential association of CVG (independent of CMN) with seizures, neuropsychiatric, and ophthalmologic disorders, and nevus-associated CVG (cerebriform intradermal nevus) with melanoma, multidisciplinary evaluation of CMN patients with CVG is important to guide management and treatment.

Central retinal artery occlusion is a rare ophthalmological complication of sickle cell disease, usually provoked by additional contributing risk factors and its treatment remains controversial. We describe a patient with sickle cell disease and a spontaneous central retinal artery occlusion of his left eye that probably has good result from intravenous thrombolysis. We want to add sickle cell disease as rare etiological cause of central retinal artery occlusion and perpetuate evidence of intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator administration in this condition.

Metastases are the most common adult intraocular tumors. However, those located in the optic nerve are very uncommon and are usually associated with spread to other locations such as the central nervous system, which darkens the prognosis. There is a case of a 67-year-old woman who reports progressive vision loss in the right eye of 15 days of evolution. The ophthalmological examination shows a relative afferent pupil defect in this eye and a pseudoedema of the papilla with retinal hemorrhages in the fundus. Personal history and characteristics of the optic nerve suggest the diagnosis of metas

Serous retinal detachment is an uncommon complication of pregnancy that occurs in well-known situations, such as severe preeclampsia, eclampsia, or hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count (HELLP) syndrome. The latter still does not reach a consensus, in particular on its classification and pathophysiology. We report the case of a young pregnant woman having a partial HELLP syndrome with massive proteinuria who presented a bilateral exudative retinal detachment having healed spontaneously after pregnancy termination and blood pressure control without requiring an ophthalmologi

We report four asymptomatic patients from Nepal with an incidental finding of a dead intraocular helminth parasite on ophthalmological routine examination. Because the patients were asymptomatic and the intraocular helminth parasites dead without noted pathology present, it was decided to abstain from surgical removal and pursue a watch-and-wait strategy. The clinical follow-up of the four patients over two years was uneventful and showed no complications. We conclude that dead intraocular helminth parasites in asymptomatic patients without apparent pathology do not require surgical removal.

COL4A1 is an essential component for basal membrane stability. Exon mutations of the COL4A1 genes are responsible for a broad spectrum of cerebral, ocular, and systemic manifestations. We describe here the phenotype of a likely pathogenic gene variant, p.Gly743Val, which is responsible for a missense mutation in the COL4A1 gene exon 30 in a three generation family with severe hypermetropia and highly penetrant porencephaly in the absence of systemic manifestations. This report highlights both the broad spectrum of COL4A1 mutations and the yield of testing the COL4A1 gene in familial ophthalmol

Measles is a contagious viral infection that usually affects children. The disease is caused by morbillivirus, a virus of the family Paramyxoviridae. The clinical picture is characterized by four phases: incubation, invasion, eruption and desquamation. Ophthalmologic manifestations in measles are rare, dominated by conjunctivitis and keratitis. Corneal involvement is the main concern; it varies from simple superficial punctate keratitis to corneal perforation. We report three cases of acute keratitis in young adults during an epidemic. The epithelial involvement was peripheral, central or diff

This paper describes possible clinical ocular manifestations of novel coronavirus infection COVID-19. Two clinical cases of conjunctivitis are examined. Due to the lack of ophthalmological approaches to the treatment of such patients, different management tactics are given based on the severity of local and systemic disease manifestations. Our research and practical management of these conditions showed the toxic and allergic nature of ocular surface manifestations in patients with COVID-19. Such cases are proposed to be treated similar to the conjunctivitis of "unclear origin" with components

A 62-year-old man was admitted to our clinic with a two-week history of double vision. Neuro-ophthalmological examination showed a left abducens nerve palsy with an ipsilateral Horner's syndrome. Neuro-imaging identified recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma explaining the clinical findings. Co-existence of unilateral abducens nerve palsy and ipsilateral Horner's syndrome is very rare and localises to the posterior cavernous sinus. Therefore, clinicians should be aware of this rare co-existence and perform appropriate neuro-imaging to clarify the underlying aetiology.

Inverted papilloma is an interesting benign tumour arising from lining epithelium of paranasal sinuses which most commonly involves nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. However, involvement of orbit and intracranial extension without malignant transformation is very rare. We report a case of extensive inverted papilloma of frontal sinus which primarily presented with proptosis, an uncommon presentation. Ophthalmologic symptoms are rare manifestations of paranasal sinus inverted papilloma without malignant transformation and signify extensive disease with possible intracranial extension.

Airway management remains a challenge in children, and the presence of a cleft palate further complicates the scenario. Endotracheal intubation, although definitive and most preferred, may be avoided for certain short-duration procedures wherein the use of laryngeal mask airway can allow quicker emergence. We present the successful airway management of 2 pediatric patients with cleft palate undergoing ophthalmological surgery, using AMBU® LMA® as the airway device of choice, which was further used as a rescue airway device in an emergent situation of "difficult to ventilate."

Sakoda complex is a rare but distinct combination of birth defects consisting of a basal cephalocele, agenesis of the corpus callosum, and midline cleft lip/palate. It has been reported in association with ophthalmologic abnormalities, cognitive deficits and severe epilepsy. Here we describe both prenatal and postnatal MRI findings of a classic case of Sakoda complex in a child with characteristic findings on fetal MRI; prenatal findings have not been described in the literature. Diagnosis of this entity has important implications for prenatal counseling and perinatal management, as is demonst

A 14-year-old boy presented with a presumed diagnosis of autosomal recessive spastic ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay (ARSACS). The neurological examination, nerve conduction study, and brain imaging results were all consistent with the diagnosis. The ophthalmologic examination was notable for a prominent myelinated nerve fiber layer extending from the disk along the major temporal arcades in both eyes. Loss of foveal depression was noted clinically and on spectral domain optical coherence tomography. This case highlights a novel finding that may aid in the diagnosis of ARSACS.

Photophobia, an abnormal intolerance to light, is associated with a number of ophthalmic and neurologic conditions. In the presence of normal neurologic and ophthalmologic examinations, the most common conditions associated with photophobia are migraine, blepharospasm, and traumatic brain injury. Recent evidence indicates that the intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells play a key role in the pathophysiology of photophobia. Although pharmacologic manipulation of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells and the neural pathways that mediate photophobia may be possible in t
