Evidence for a polar circumbinary exoplanet orbiting a pair of eclipsing brown dwarfs.

One notable example of exoplanet diversity is the population of circumbinary planets, which orbit around both stars of a binary star system. There are, so far, only 16 known circumbinary exoplanets, all of which lie in the same orbital plane as the host binary. Suggestions indicate that circumbinary planets could also exist on orbits highly inclined to the binary, close to 90°, polar orbits. No such planets have been found yet, but polar circumbinary gas and debris discs have been observed, and if these were to form planets, then those would be left on a polar orbit. We report strong evidence

Orbital mesenchymal chondrosarcoma and its specific fusion gene HEY1-NCOA2.

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (MC) is an uncommon type of malignant soft tissue tumor. The skeleton is the most common site of MC. Extraosseous sarcoma is rare, especially that of the orbit. Fusion gene HEY1-NCOA2 has diagnostic significance for MC, but there is a lack of research on its related pathways. To analyze the characteristics of orbital mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (MC), and search for HEY1-NCOA2-related pathways in orbital MCs, four cases of orbital MC were included in the study. METHODS: From January 2018 to December 2022, four MC patients hospitalized at Tianjin Medical Un

Orbital Emergency in a Child: Retrobulbar Hematoma Induced by Extensive Subgaleal Hemorrhage.

Orbital and extracranial hematomas in children present diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to atypical and rapidly evolving symptoms. Retrobulbar hematoma (RBH), though rare, is an ophthalmologic emergency with a high risk of vision loss. This report describes an unusual case of RBH associated with subgaleal hematoma in an 8-year-old boy following a fall. The patient showed proptosis, periorbital ecchymosis, and occipital swelling. CT confirmed the hematomas, and urgent surgical drainage preserved visual function. This case highlights the need for early diagnosis, imaging, and a multidis

Weak temperature dependence of orbital Hall angle in Ta/Ni bilayers.

In spintronics, characterizing the temperature dependence of spin Hall angle (SHA) has been a common method to explore the underlying mechanisms of spin Hall effect (SHE). However, the experimental reports of orbital Hall effect (OHE) under varying temperatures remain limited. Here, we systematically investigate the effective charge-to-spin conversion efficiencyθHin Ta/Ni and Ta/CoFeB bilayers across the temperature ranging from 10 K to 300 K, where theθHrepresents the combined contribution of the SHA and the orbital Hall angle (OHA). TheθHof Ta/Ni remains positive across the investigated temp

Spin Polarization in Strong-Field Ionization as Sensor of Trapped Electron Orbits.

We show how spin polarization of photoelectrons produced in strong-field ionization of noble-gas atoms can be used to detect highly unexpected electron orbits created in strong, circularly polarized near-infrared fields. In such fields, ionization is expected to generate photoelectrons rapidly moving away from the ionic core, freezing their initial spin due to the short-range nature of the spin-orbit interaction between the photoelectron and the core. However, we find clear evidence of spin flips in the photoelectron spectra at low photoelectron energies and confirm that they happen because a

A novel indicator in evaluating endoscopic orbital decompression for thyroid-associated orbitopathy.

OBJECTIVE: To introduce the increase rate of effective orbital volume (IREOV) as a novel indicator for evaluating outcomes of endoscopic orbital decompression in thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO). METHODS: In this retrospective study, 69 subjects (124 orbits) underwent either medial wall decompression (MWD) or lateral wall decompression (LWD) combined with fat decompression for TAO. Artificial intelligence was used to segment the orbit and calculate IREOV to compare MWD and LWD effectiveness. The impact of postoperative extraocular muscle expansion on IREOV was also assessed, with patients

Ocular and orbital dirofilariasis: A case series from Sisak-Moslavina County.

Ocular and orbital dirofilariasis, though rare, can mimic common eye infections or other conditions and lead to misdiagnosis. We present a series of four patients with ocular and orbital dirofilariasis in Sisak-Moslavina County of Croatia, emphasizing the variable clinical presentations and diagnostic challenges. Ocular dirofilariasis should be considered in patients with unexplained symptoms, particularly in endemic or rural areas. Detailed anamnesis and timely surgical intervention are essential for accurate diagnosis and management.

Deep Learning Model for Automated Segmentation of Orbital Structures in MRI Images.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a crucial tool for visualizing orbital structures and detecting eye pathologies. However, manual segmentation of orbital anatomy is challenging due to the complexity and variability of the structures. Recent advancements in deep learning (DL), particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs), offer promising solutions for automated segmentation in medical imaging. This study aimed to train and evaluate a U-Net-based model for the automated segmentation of key orbital structures. METHODS: This retrospective study included 117 patients with vario

Atypical orbital mass as the precursor for myelodysplastic syndrome recurrence: a case report.

PURPOSE: Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) has the potential to progress into acute myeloid leukemia (AML), even in patients in remission. Granulocytic sarcomas are extramedullary manifestations of AML that can rarely occur in the orbit and in the absence of systemic signs of disease. We describe the unusual presentation of an isolated orbital mass in an adult patient at high-risk for development of AML. OBSERVATIONS: A 42-year-old male with a history of MDS in remission for nearly two years after chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant presented with unilateral eye pain and swelling, blurry vis

An acute presentation of orbital lymphangioma in a five-year-old child in Pakistan.

Lymphangiomas are multi-cystic malformations involving the lymphatic and vascular systems. Most commonly occurring in the head and neck region in the paediatric age group, lymphangiomas generally are benign in nature. Given the tumour's mass, the lymphangioma itself or the accompanying haemorrhage may impair ocular movement and result in compressive optic neuropathy. Furthermore, lymphangiomas have the potential to unevenly infiltrate nearby critical structures including the optic nerve. This trait poses numerous surgical difficulties and makes the therapy of ocular lymphangiomas particularly
