Alkali soluble and alkali insoluble fluoride retention in demineralized enamel in vivo.

Demineralization of enamel was induced by applying orthodontic bands in 15 patients having two of their premolars extracted for orthodontic reasons. After a 4-wk caries induction period, eight patients were instructed to rinse their teeth once daily with a neutral 0.05% NaF solution, whereas seven patients received a single treatment with a neutral 2% NaF solution. The bands were reattached to the teeth during the fluoride treatment period and the teeth were extracted after two more weeks. Three consecutive enamel layers were etched off, and a significant uptake of fluoride in all three layers

Long-term dental stability after orthognathic surgery: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Long-term dental stability is one of the main objectives following combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgical treatment. It is influenced by multiple factors such as surgical, patient-related, and orthodontic aspects. While recent reviews mainly focus on short-term dental changes (0.5-2 years), longer follow-up dental stability remains hardly reviewed. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate long-term stability of dental and dentolabial changes following combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgical treatment with a minimum follow-up period of 5 years. Descriptive Analysis of Factors Associated with External Cervical Resorption.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to perform a descriptive analysis of the occurrence of external cervical resorption (ECR) in relatio … on, most ECR cases were observed on maxillary teeth (72%). The most frequently appearing factor was orthodontics (45.7%). Other frequently observed factors were trauma (28.5%), parafunctional habits (23.2%), poor oral health (22.9%), malocclusion (17.5%), and extraction of a neighboring tooth (14%). CONCLUSIONS: The data indicate that ECR is not related to pa …

Comparative Assessment of Smile Attractiveness Perception and Treatment Need Across Dental Professionals and Laypersons.

INTRODUCTION: Smile esthetics are crucial in orthodontics; however, orthodontists, general dentists, and laypersons perceive deviations differently, prompting the need for comparative evaluation. This study explored how these groups assess upper midline discrepancies, gingival display, maxillary cant, reduced upper teeth show, asymmetric upper lip elevation, and chin deviation, aiming to determine their combined impact on smile attractiveness and treatment needs while identifying thresholds for clinical intervention to enhance patient-focused care. METHODOLOGY: This cross-sectional study was …

Conservative Management of Class III Invasive Cervical Resorption Using the Heithersay Technique: A Case Report.

Invasive cervical resorption (ICR) is an uncommon condition involving the gradual loss of cervical tooth structure due to the invasion of fibrovascular tissue because of predisposing factors such as trauma, orthodontics, and intracoronal restorations. A 45-year-old female patient presented with a class III cervical lesion and a missing restoration on the maxillary left lateral incisor following trauma. Radiographic examination revealed a "moth-eaten" appearance and a negative pulp test when cold testing was performed. Since it was a Class III lesion, the Heithersay technique was the choice of …

A total of 56 Class II division 1 malocclusion patients indicated for treatment with myofunctional appliances and fixed functional appliances were randomized. They were equally divided among frankal appliance (n=14), twin block appliance (n=14), PowerScope (American Orthodontics) (n=14), Forsus (3M Unitek Corp) groups (n=14). Skeletal and dentoalveolar effects of all appliances were compared. SNB i…

Vertical and Transverse Management with Transpalatal Arches in an Adult with Class III Malocclusion.

The transpalatal arch might be one of the most common intraoral auxiliary fixed appliances used in orthodontics in order to provide dental anchorage. The aim of the present case report is to describe a case in which an adult patient with a tendency to class III, palatal compression, and bilateral posterior crossbite was treated with double transpalatal bars in order to control the torque of both the first and the second molars. Double transpalatal arches on both first and second maxillary molars are a successful appliance in order to control the posterior sectors and improve the torsion of the…

New developments in: three-dimensional planning for orthognathic surgery.

The limitations of plain film radiographs are well documented and the recent introduction of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging has been a breakthrough in enabling three-dimensional (3D) visualization of the bony skeleton and dentition. There are many reported applications for CBCT in the field of orthodontics and maxillofacial surgery, including the localization of impacted teeth and implant site assessment. More recently, by augmenting CBCT volumes of the maxilla, mandible and dentition, a virtual 3D patient can be created, which can allow planning of orthognathic surgery entirely …

What's ailing us? Prevalence and type of long-term disabilities among an insured cohort of orthodontists.

Occupational health risks are present in every profession. This article reviews 4 commonly mentioned conditions that might be health risks in orthodontics and dentistry--musculoskeletal problems, carpal tunnel syndrome, dermatoses and allergies, and psychosocial problems--and compares the reported prevalence rates with data from the American Association of Orthodontists Long-Term Disability Insurance Plan. There is an estimated 3.56% prevalence of long-term disability among orthodontists. The expected and actual specific conditions affecting orthodontists could differ from those of the general…

Mandibular anterior intrusion using miniscrews for skeletal anchorage: A 3-dimensional finite element analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Deepbites can be corrected by intrusion of mandibular anterior teeth. Direct anchorage with miniscrews simplifies complex tooth movements; however, few studies have reported their use for mandibular anterior intrusion. The purpose of this study was to evaluate, by means of the finite element method, initial tooth displacement and periodontal stress distribution using various mandibular anterior intrusion mechanics. Miniscrews were used as skeletal anchorage devices. METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography scans were used for 3-dimensional reconstruction of the mandible and the ma
