Impact of a multimedia teaching tool on parental anxiety and knowledge during the informed consent process.

PURPOSE: Before performing a surgical procedure, informed consent (IC) is obtained. Parents may exhibit anxiety and/or a desire for more knowledge during the IC process for their child. The purpose of this study was to measure the impact of a multimedia intervention (MMI) versus conventional discussion on parental understanding and anxiety during the IC process for infants undergoing surgery for hypertrophic pyloric stenosis. METHODS: A time-interrupted series design was employed over a 9-month period. In the first phase, conventional discussion for IC was performed. In the second phase, a MM

Unprepared and Misinformed Parents of Children with Sickle Cell Disease: Time to Rethink Awareness Campaigns.

Worldwide, sickle cell disease (SCD) poses a significant public health concern. It causes recurrent morbidity, and premature death is a distinct possibility, especially in Nigeria, which bears half the world's burden of SCD patients. Nigeria has yet to establish a newborn screening program; consequently, most affected children are diagnosed between one and three years of age when a health problem arises. Parents are unprepared to identify SCD and seek comprehensive management early enough for the best outcome. Awareness of carrier status and knowledge of SCD would ensure informed reproductive

The Scientific Study of Parents and Caregivers of Children with ASD: A Flourishing Field but Still Work to be Done.

There is a long history of research on parents and caregivers of individuals within autism. Parents and other primary caregivers typically play the most important part in the lives of persons with ASD although the need for support as the child becomes of age varies widely. This special issue includes 30 articles on central areas related to parenting and caregiving for people with ASD. Some of the key themes include intervention and training, mental health issues related to parent and family stress, measurement and assessment, and parent-child transactional processes. Other articles in this iss…

Tailoring immunisation service delivery in a disadvantaged community in Australia; views of health providers and parents.

In 2014 the Australian immunisation target was raised from 90% to 95% of children to be fully immunised. A national priority is to identify geographic areas of low coverage and implement strategies to improve immunisation rates. Using The World Health Organization's Tailoring Immunization Programmes (TIP) Guidelines, the aim of this study was to identify areas of low immunisation coverage for children in the Hunter New England Local Health District, New South Wales, and to gain a deeper understanding of the factors influencing immunisation in those areas in order to develop tailored strategies

Parents' Experiences of Suicide-Bereavement: A Qualitative Study at 6 and 12 Months after Loss.

The death of a child by suicide is a severe trauma, placing parents at greater risk of psychological morbidity and physical health problems compared to other causes of death. However, few studies have examined the aftermath and bereavement experience for parents following the death of a child to suicide, limiting the ability to guide effective postvention services through empirical research. The current study, which was part of a larger longitudinal investigation of suicide bereavement in Queensland, Australia, examined the individual experiences of both mothers and fathers bereaved by suicide

Parent Perceptions of Initial Feeding Experiences of Children Born With Cleft Palate in a Rural Locale.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: An early problem frequently present in infants born with cleft lip (CL), cleft lip and palate (CLP), or cleft palate (CP) is difficulty feeding. In many cases, health-care professionals are not familiar with the appropriate feeding techniques and unable to instruct parents correctly. This problem can be particularly significant in rural areas where health-care resources are limited and children with clefts are seen on an infrequent basis. The purpose of the investigation was to study the initial feeding experiences of parents who reside in rural areas and whose child

Longitudinal associations between physically abusive parents' emotional expressiveness and children's self-regulation.

The present study took a developmental psychopathology approach to examine the longitudinal association between parents' emotional expressiveness and children's self-regulation. Data collection spanned from 2004 to 2008. Ninety-two physically abusive parents completed yearly assessments of their emotional expressiveness, as well as their children's self-regulation abilities. Observational and behavioral measures were also obtained yearly to capture both parents' emotional expressiveness and children's self-regulation. Specifically, parents participated in a parent-child interaction task, which

Exploration of the influence of insecure attachment and parental maltreatment on the incidence and course of adult clinical depression.

BACKGROUND: Both childhood maltreatment and insecure attachment are known to be associated with depression in adulthood. The extent insecure attachment increases the risk of adult clinical depression over that of parental maltreatment among women in the general population is explored, using those at high risk because of their selection for parental maltreatment together with an unselected sample. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews and investigator-based measures are employed. RESULTS: Insecure attachment is highly associated with parental maltreatment with both contributing to the risk of d

Parental genetic material and oxygen concentration affect hatch dynamics of mouse embryo in vitro.

BACKGROUND: Hatching is crucial for mammalian embryo implantation, since difficulties during this process can lead to implantation failure, ectopic pregnancy and consequent infertility. Despite years of intensive researches, how internal and external factors affecting embryo hatch are still largely unclear. METHODS: The effects of parental genetic material and oxygen concentration on hatch process were examined. Fertilized and parthenogenetic mouse preimplantation embryos were cultured in vitro under 5 and 20% oxygen for 120 h. Zona pellucida drilling by Peizo micromanipulation were performed

Parental costs for in-patient neonatal services for perinatal asphyxia and low birth weight in Ghana.

The major causes of newborn deaths in sub-Saharan Africa are well-known and countries are gradually implementing evidence-based interventions and strategies to reduce these deaths. Facility-based care provides the best outcome for sick and or small babies; however, little is known about the cost and burden of hospital-based neonatal services on parents in West Africa, the sub-region with the highest global neonatal death burden. To estimate the actual costs borne by parents of newborns hospitalised with birth-associated brain injury (perinatal asphyxia) and preterm/low birth weight, this study
