Survivorship Care Plan Information Needs: Perspectives of Safety-Net Breast Cancer Patients.

PURPOSE: Despite the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) 2005 recommendation, few care organizations have instituted standard survivorship care plans (SCPs). Low health literacy and low English proficiency are important factors to consider in SCP development. Our study aimed to identify information needs and survivorship care plan preferences of low literacy, multi-lingual patients to support the transition from oncology to primary care and ongoing learning in survivorship. METHODS: We conducted focus groups in five languages with African American, Latina, Russian, Filipina, White, and Chinese medi

Associations between long commutes and subjective health complaints among railway workers in Norway.

Commuting is an important aspect of daily life for many employees, but there is little knowledge of how this affects individual commuters' health and well-being. The authors investigated the relationship between commuting and subjective health complaints, using data from a web-based questionnaire. In a sample of 2126 railway employees, 644 (30.3%) had long commute times. A 29-item inventory was used to measure the number and degree of the subjective health complaints. Those who commuted 60 min or more each way were characterized by significantly higher numbers and degrees of subjective health

Cumulative life course impairment in vitiligo.

Vitiligo is an acquired, idiopathic skin disease characterized by the mostly progressive loss of the inherited skin color leading to white p … session, while this group seems to be less depressed or embarrassed. Results from our own work with peer groups of these patients strongly support a positive long-lasting effect of treatment on quality of life of children, adolescents and adults. To which extent vitiligo may contribute to a cumulative life course impairment remains to be shown.

Retention of underrepresented minority students in dental school: one dental schools story.

There is a large disparity between the proportions of African-Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans in the general population and in the dental profession. While these underrepresented minorities (URMs) as a group make up almost 30% of the United States population, they constitute only about 6% of the nation's dentists. Eliminating this disparity is important in addressing access to care for underrepresented groups. Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry (TAMHSC-BCD) enrolled greater numbers and proportions of URM students than any other non-minority school from 2006-

Psychological assessment in children and adolescents with Benign Paroxysmal Vertigo.

Migraine in childhood and adolescence has been associated with the presence of behavioural and emotional difficulties, but only few data are available with respect to unusual types of headache syndromes such as Benign Paroxysmal Vertigo of Childhood (BPVC). Aim of the present study was to evaluate the behavioural and emotional profiles of clinically referred children and adolescents suffering from BPVC and migraine, as compared to normal controls. According to the revised International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-2) the BPVC belongs to the category of "primary headache", as a mi

[Some psychological characteristics of children and adolescents with vitiligo--our results].

INTRODUCTION: Numerous studies have characterized patients with chronic skin disease as psychologically vulnerable, mainly due to the fact that their condition affects their social relations and all other aspects of life. The purpose of this work was to determine whether there are significant differences in the level of anxiety, severity of depressive symptoms, and presence of stressful life events between adolescent patients with vitiligo and healthy peers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 33 patients with vitiligo aged 10-15 years, and a control group of 60 healthy subjects of the same age, were inclu

Cognitive development in schizophrenia: follow-back from the first episode.

Despite consensus that schizophrenia is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by cognitive deficits, objective data documenting the course of cognitive development remain sparse. We conducted a follow-back study of patients ascertained at the time of their initial episode of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, and a group of demographically matched healthy volunteers. We obtained school records containing standardized achievement test scores from the 1st through 12th grades, and scholastic aptitude test results from the 11th and 12th grades, and examined the developmental trajecto

Asthma in middle schools: what students have to say about their asthma.

Preadolescence involves cognitive, social, and physiological changes along with changes in the child's environment. During this developmental stage, young adolescents are transitioning into middle school, forming a larger social network, and managing parental expectations for assuming more responsibility for self-care. The impact of these developmental changes on asthma management is not well understood. The purpose of this study was to better understand asthma and asthma management from the perspective of middle school students. A partnership was formed between the university researcher, seve

Special needs of the adolescent with epilepsy.

Adjustment to the inherent changes of adolescence is a challenge for many children, even healthy ones. Epilepsy may make successful adjustment even more difficult by disrupting self-control, adversely affecting the ability to conform to one's peers, and interfering with independence. Epilepsy and its treatment may affect education, employment, use of alcohol and illicit drugs, sexual activity, and pregnancy. These issues, in turn, may affect seizure control. Matching the medicine to the patient is particularly important in teenagers, a group of patients with special needs. Common seizure syndr

Penicillin failure in streptococcal tonsillopharyngitis: causes and remedies.

UNLABELLED: Penicillin administered for 10 days has been the treatment of choice for group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal tonsillopharyngitis since the 1950s. The bacteriologic failure rate of 10 days of penicillin therapy ranged from approximately 2 to 10% until the early 1970s. Beginning in the late 1970s bacteriologic and clinical failure rates with penicillin therapy began to increase steadily over time and are now reported to be approximately 30%. The primary cause of penicillin treatment failure in streptococcal tonsillopharyngitis may be lack of compliance with the 10-day therapeutic re

Natural history of asymptomatic carotid plaque.

In April 1981, a total of 297 carotid arteries were examined prospectively. All patients were asymptomatic and were referred to the peripheral vascular laboratory at Good Samaritan Medical Center, Phoenix, for real-time B-mode ultrasonography. A measurement of luminal area stenosis was determined to be either greater or less than 75%. In addition, the ultrasound echo pattern was used to classify plaque as either calcified, dense, or soft. If, for any reason, the patient or physician felt that carotid endarterectomy should be performed, the patient was dropped from the study. In addition, the u

[Effects of Motivational Interview and Mobile Social Network Support on Smoking Cessation in Male Patients With Coronary Heart Disease].

BACKGROUND: Patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) who quit smoking exhibit lower rates of heart attack recurrence and mortality than their peers who continue smoking. However, most male patients with CHD resume smoking after hospital discharge. PURPOSE: To explore the effectiveness of motivational interventions and mobile social network support on smoking cessation and other predictors of smoking cessation in male patients with CHD. METHODS: An experimental design was used, and a convenience sample was recruited from a cardiology ward of a hospital in northern Taiwan. The participants w

A Scoping Review on Positive Emotions and Affect in Autism.

PURPOSE: Autism research has primarily emphasized difficulties with negative affect, while positive emotions remain underexplored despite its central role in well-being and social functioning. This scoping review synthesizes existing evidence on positive emotions and affect in autism, focusing on the recognition, experience, and regulation of positive emotions as well as relevant interventions. METHOD: Using the Arksey & O'Malley (2005) framework and PRISMA-ScR (Peters et al., 2020; Tricco et al., 2018), we included 29 studies from 1,119 database records and added 43 manually identified paper
