Executive Functions and Financial Risk-Taking: The Crucial Role of Cognitive Flexibility and Mediating Effect of Risk-Perception.

Executive functions are crucial for decision-making, yet their role in financial risk-taking remains unclear. This study explores the relationship of three executive functions-inhibitory control, working memory, and cognitive flexibility-with two areas of financial risk-taking: investing and gambling. Additionally, it examines how risk perception mediates these relationships. An online correlational study was conducted with 399 participants, utilising three measures of executive functions: the Go/No-Go task to assess inhibitory control, the Trail Making Test for cognitive flexibility, and the

The Cultural Perception of Abuse in a Multicultural Context and Its Impact on Mental Health: A Case Report.

This case report reviews the psychiatric difficulties of a 27-year-old female patient from Botswana with symptoms fitting for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), cluster B personality traits, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Her case illustrates how corporal punishment, an accepted practice in Botswana, remains in stark contrast to the standards of American society and the psychological consequences that may emerge from such practices. The patient presented with mood instability, anxiety, and recurrent depressive episodes, which were worsened by poor coping mechanisms inc

Altered Pain Perception in a Young Adult with Childhood Trauma and Suspected Riley-Day Syndrome: A Case Report.

Background and Clinical Significance: Altered pain perception is a diagnostic challenge for patients with a history of trauma and substance use. Familial dysautonomia (Riley-Day syndrome) may further complicate the sensory profiles. Case Presentation: We describe a male in his late twenties, originally from Central America, with a history of severe childhood trauma and chronic cannabis use, who reported diminished pain perception despite multiple injuries. Despite the absence of nociceptive pain (nociceptive hypoesthesia), abnormal sensations, such as tingling and itching (paresthesia), and oc

Harnessing hybrid perception on multi-scale features for hand-foot-mouth disease multi-region prediction based on Seq2Seq.

Accurate prediction of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is crucial for effective epidemic prevention and control. Existing prediction models often overlook the cross-regional transmission dynamics of HFMD, limiting their applicability to single regions. Furthermore, their ability to perceive spatio-temporal features holistically remains limited, hindering the precise modeling of epidemic trends. To address these limitations, a novel HFMD prediction model named Seq2Seq-HMF is proposed, which is based on the Sequence-to-Sequence(Seq2Seq) framework. This model leverages hybrid perception of m

Detecting biological motion signals in human and monkey superior colliculus: a subcortical-cortical pathway for biological motion perception.

Most vertebrates, including humans, are highly adept at detecting and encoding biological motion, even when it is portrayed by just a few point lights attached to the head and major joints. However, the function of subcortical regions in biological motion perception has been scarcely explored. Here, we investigate the role of the superior colliculus in local biological motion processing. Using high-field (3 T) and ultra-high-field (7 T) functional magnetic resonance imaging, we record the neural responses of the superior colliculus to scrambled point-light walkers (with local kinematics retain

Molar root canal treatment performed by undergraduate dental students; an observational study of procedural errors and student perception.

BACKGROUND: Molar root canal treatment (RCT) is challenging and requires training and specific skills. Rotary instrumentation (RI) reduces the time needed for instrumentation but may increase the risk of certain procedural errors. The aims of this study were to evaluate the quality of molar RCTs provided by undergraduate students, to compare the prevalence of procedural errors following manual and RI, and to assess the students' self-perceived confidence to perform molar RCT without supervision and their preference for either manual or RI. METHODS: Molar RCTs performed by the final year stude

Impacts of audiovisual simultaneity perception on single-task and dual-task gaits in middle-aged and older adults.

BACKGROUND: While dual-task walking requires the ability to integrate sensory information from multiple ongoing sources, it remains unknown whether dual-task walking is more affected than single-task walking by the multisensory integration ability. RESEARCH QUESTION: How does the audiovisual temporal integration ability affect single-task and dual-task gaits in the aging population? METHODS: One hundred and thirty healthy middle-aged and older adults (age = 64.7 ± 6.4 years) completed an audiovisual simultaneity judgment (AVSJ) task and underwent single-task, motor dual-task, and cognitive d

Evaluating phasic transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) with pupil dilation: the importance of stimulation intensity and sensory perception.

The efficacy of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) as a non-invasive method to modulate physiological markers of noradrenergic activity of the Locus Coeruleus (LC), such as pupil dilation, is increasingly more discussed. However, taVNS studies show high heterogeneity of stimulation effects. Therefore, a taVNS setup was established here to test different frequencies (10 Hz and 25 Hz) and intensities (3 mA and 5 mA) during phasic stimulation (3 s) with time-synchronous recording of pupil dilation in younger adults. Specifically, phasic real taVNS and higher intensity led to

Antiviral Effects and Mechanisms of Green Tea Catechins on Influenza: A Perception on Combating Symptoms from COVID-19.

Over the centuries, influenza and its associated epidemics have been a serious public health problem. Although vaccination and medications (such as neuraminidase inhibitors) are the mainstay of pharmacological approaches to prevent and treat influenza, however, frequent mutations in the influenza genome often result in treatment failure and resistance to standard medications which limit their effectiveness. In recent years, green tea catechins have been evaluated as potential anti-influenza agents. Herein, in this review, we highlighted the effects and mechanisms underlying the inhibitory effe
