Exercise promotes glutamate transporter-mediated glutamate uptake in the striatum to regulate MSN plasticity and alleviate behavioral and functional impairments in PD rats.

This study investigated whether exercise ameliorates behavioral deficits in a rat model of Parkinson's disease (PD) by regulating medium spiny neuron (MSN) plasticity via striatal astrocytic excitatory amino acid transporters (EAATs). The PD model was induced by 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) and confirmed by apomorphine rotation. Exercised rats underwent 4 weeks of treadmill training. We assessed motor function using beam walking and cylinder tests. Striatal pathology was evaluated via tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunohistochemistry, glutamate (Glu) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, c-Fos tracing

Co-Production of Hydrogen and Carbon Nanotubes From Waste Plastic Over Ni-Fe/Hydrotalcite Catalysts: Process Optimization and Mechanistic Pathways.

To tackle the urgent energy depletion issue, this research presents a catalytic upcycling approach for plastic waste through thermochemical conversion mediated by Ni-Fe nanoparticles anchored on layered double hydroxide substrates. The effects of Ni/Fe loading molar ratios, catalytic temperatures, and steam flow rates were explored to optimize catalyst performance and operational parameters for hydrogen (H2) production. Attributed to the formation of a spinel phase, the Ni-Fe1.5/hydrotalcite catalyst demonstrated the highest catalytic activity during the catalytic reforming process, yielding 5

A multicentre audit of costs, plastic waste and CO2-equivalent emissions of single-use items in flexible nasal endoscopy in UK ENT practice.

BACKGROUND: In 2024, ENT UK published national guidance on sustainable practice during flexible nasal endoscopy (FNE), recommending minimisation of nonessential disposable items based on evidence-based literature. Despite these recommendations, anecdotal evidence suggests continued widespread use. METHODS: A cross-sectional audit across six NHS hospitals surveyed ENT clinicians on their use of gloves, aprons, surgical masks, lubricants and anti-fog agents during FNE, as well as reasons for usage. Data were extrapolated to estimate annual cost, plastic waste and greenhouse gas emissions expres

Recurrent Hermaphroditism and Sex-Biased ABCDE Gene Expression Reveal Latent Floral Plasticity in the Pedunculate Oak Lineage (Q. robur s.l.).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The development of unisexual flowers relies on the tight coordination of flower organ identity and sex determination. The genus Quercus is typically considered strictly monoecious, bearing fully segregated male and female flowers within the same individual tree. However, several reports of atypical flowering across the genus challenge this prevailing view, suggesting that flowering in oaks may be more flexible than traditionally assumed. In this work, the dynamics of flower development in Quercus orocantabrica were examined to correlate contrasting floral morphologies with

BDNF-modulated plastic changes to dendritic spines in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex underlie the NMDA-induced pre-convulsive stereotyped behavior in rats.

Systemic administration of NMDA induces stereotyped behavior followed frequently, but not always, by generalized epileptiform seizures. Increased NMDA activity provokes overstimulation of NMDA glutamate receptors in neurons with dendritic spines. Systemic administration of 100 mg/kg of NMDA i.p. induced stereotyped behavior in adult male rats 5-10 min post-injection. Then, the density and proportion of the various types of spines were counted in pyramidal neurons of the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex of two groups: NMDA-treated rats and a Saline control. Dendritic spine density increased in

Pressure-dependent effects of hyperbaric oxygen on hippocampal CREB-BDNF signaling and associated changes in synaptic plasticity and recognition memory in healthy rats.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been proposed to modulate brain function, yet its pressure-dependent effects on hippocampal plasticity and cognition remain unclear. This study investigated the effects of HBOT at 1.6, 2.0, and 2.4 atmospheres absolute (ATA) on molecular pathways underlying synaptic plasticity and inhibitory neurotransmission, as well as on cognitive performance in healthy rats. Animals were exposed to HBOT for 1 h/day over 14 consecutive days. Cognitive performance was assessed using the Novel Object Recognition (NOR) and Y-maze tests. Hippocampal expression of brain-deriv

Sparse Coding and Temporal Pattern Learning Co-Mediated by Dual Spike-Timing-Dependent Plasticity in a Multilayer Excitatory-Inhibitory Spiking Network.

Excitatory-inhibitory (E-I) local circuits play a central role in synaptic plasticity and neural coding, yet their multilayer learning dynamics remain poorly understood. We constructed a multilayer feedforward spiking neural network with intra-layer E-I connectivity, using Izhikevich neurons to model regular spiking (RS) and fast spiking (FS) cells, and examined cooperative learning under excitatory and inhibitory spike-timing-dependent plasticity (eSTDP and iSTDP). FS-mediated lateral inhibition alleviates the long-term depression bias arising from RS firing rate adaptation via winner-take-al

2,5-Furandicarboxylate-based elastomer composites with surface-treated nanocellulose crystals: Toward engineering-plastic-level performance through efficient dispersion.

This study develops a new bio-based elastomer nanocomposite with superior mechanical properties compared with other biomass-derived elastomers. This enhancement was achieved by optimizing the dispersion of surface-functionalized cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), including sulfated (PCNC), carboxylated (ACNC), and silanized (SCNC). Their long-term dispersibility in 1,4-butanediol, a monomeric medium utilized for in situ polymerization was systematically assessed. Surface chemistry strongly influenced CNC compatibility with the polymer matrix, thereby governing interfacial interactions, crystalliza

Microplastic pollution decouples soil food web structure-function cascades in plastic-mulched arid agroecosystems: Northwest China as a global testbed.

Arid and semi-arid agroecosystems cover nearly half of global croplands and face escalating threats from microplastic (MP) pollution. Current empirical research has predominantly focused on MP toxic effects on individual soil microbial groups. However, few systematic investigations have addressed multitrophic responses of soil food webs or developed an integrated mechanistic framework to synthesize such trophic changes. Herein, we establish a holistic soil food web-centred framework to disentangle MP-induced ecological alterations specific to arid and semi-arid agroecosystems. A core novelty o

Artificial Intelligence for Automated Current Procedural Terminology Coding in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Using a Fine-tuned Hybrid Large Language Model.

BACKGROUND: Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding in plastic and reconstructive surgery is complex, time-intensive, and prone to error, particularly for procedures involving multiple CPT codes. Recent studies suggest that out-of-the-box large language models (LLMs) demonstrate inconsistent performance for surgical CPT coding. METHODS: A retrospective comparative study evaluated CPT code set accuracy across baseline LLMs (OpenAI, Gemini, Anthropic), external professional auditors, and a fine-tuned hybrid LLM system (ProCode), using expert consensus coding as the reference standard. Long-term outcomes of plastic versus metal stents for preoperative biliary drainage in pancreatic cancer: a nationwide propensity score-matched analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Preoperative biliary drainage (PBD) is frequently required in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) undergoing curative intent surgery presenting with obstructive jaundice. With the increasing use of neoadjuvant therapy (NAT), optimal stent selection-plastic stents (PSs) versus metal stents (MSs)-remains controversial, particularly regarding long-term outcomes. Here, using the National Clinical Database, we compared overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) between MSs and PSs in patients undergoing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatogra

A Conformal Wearable Ultrasound Bioelectronics for Mechanotherapy Reprogramming of Fibroblast Plasticity via Wnt-FGF10 Axis to Overcome Fibrotic Healing in Urethral Regeneration.

Postoperative fibrotic complications persistently challenge urethral reconstruction due to dysregulated stromal repair and poor graft integration. Conventional rigid ultrasound transducers lack anatomical conformity on dynamic tissues, limiting therapeutic efficacy. Here, we introduce a conformal, wearable low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) bioelectronic system that overcomes these constraints via controlled adhesion printing and liquid metal interconnects. This low-cost (<$20), flexible device ensures stable acoustic coupling and programmable mechanostimulation while maintaining mechanic

High-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation promotes motor recovery after spinal cord injury associated with spinal-cortical plasticity.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to persistent motor deficits, and effective strategies to enhance neural repair remain limited. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been reported to promote neuroplasticity, but its effects on corticospinal remodeling after SCI are not fully understood. In this study, adult female rats were assigned to Sham, SCI, or rTMS groups. High-frequency rTMS was applied daily for 28 days starting 1 day after injury. Motor function was assessed using Basso-Beattie-Bresnahan scoring and gait analysis. Corticospinal conduction was evaluated by motor evoked
