Craniofacial dysmorphology in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome by 3D laser surface imaging and geometric morphometrics: illuminating the developmental relationship to risk for psychosis.

Persons with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) are characterized inter alia by facial dysmorphology and greatly increased risk for psych … phrenia); lips (more prominent in 22q11.2DS; less prominent in schizophrenia) and mouth (open mouth posture in 22q11.2DS; closed mouth posture in schizophrenia). These findings directly implicate dysmorphogenesis in a cerebral-craniofacial domain that is common to 22q11.2DS and schizophrenia and which may repay further clinical and genetic interrogation i …

Biomechanical risk factors and flexor tendon frictional work in the cadaveric carpal tunnel.

Pathological changes in carpal tunnel syndrome patients include fibrosis and thickening of the subsynovial connective tissue (SSCT) adjacent … of three well-established biomechanical predictors of injury, including a combination of two wrist postures (0° and 30° flexion), three tendon velocities (50, 100, 150mm/sec), and three forces (10, 20, 40N). Tendon gliding resistance was determined with two light-weight load cells, and integrated over tendon displacement to represent tendon frictional wo …

Occlusal treatment with bite splint improves dyskinesia in Parkinson's disease patient: a case report.

The patient was a 46-year-old woman requesting oral hygiene control. She had been treated for Parkinson's disease at the neurology department of another university hospital for 9 years. When the drugs were effective (drug efficacy), she could get out of bed and change clothes without assistance, albeit slowly. When the drugs were ineffective (no drug efficacy), however, she found it difficult to get out of bed, change clothes, or maintain posture during defecation without assistance. Occlusion was B-1 on the Eichner index, and neither dislocation of the temporomandibular joint nor mandibular t…

An artery accompanying the sciatic nerve (arteria comitans nervi ischiadici) and the position of the hip joint: a comparative histological study using chick, mouse, and human foetal specimens.

Birds and reptiles always carry a long and thick artery accompanying the sciatic nerve (i.e., the sciatic artery), whereas mammals do not. We attempted to demonstrate a difference in courses of the nerve and artery in fetuses in relation with the hip joint posture. Eight mid-term human fetuses (15-18 weeks), five mouse fetuses (E18) and five chick embryos (11 days after incubation) were examined histologically. Thin feeding arteries in the sciatic nerve were consistently observed in human fetuses in spite of the long, inferiorly curved course of the nerve around the ischium. The tissue around …

Body image distortions following spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Following spinal cord injury (SCI) or anaesthesia, people may continue to experience feelings of the size, shape and posture of their body, suggesting that the conscious body image is not fully determined by immediate sensory signals. How this body image is affected by changes in sensory inputs from, and motor outputs to, the body remains unclear. METHODS: We tested paraplegic and tetraplegic SCI patients on a task that yields quantitative measures of body image. Participants were presented with an anchoring stimulus on a computer screen and told to imagine that the displayed body…

The association of an adenine insertion variant in the 5'UTR of the endothelin-1 gene with hypertension and orthostatic hypotension.

INTRODUCTION: An adenine insertion polymorphism in the 5' untranslated region of the endothelin-1 gene is functional and increases the expression of endothelin mRNA and protein in the insertion homozygote. In the present study we hypothesized that this functional polymorphism might be associated with hypertension and/or orthostatic hypotension. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The adenine insertion polymorphism was genotyped in 381 untreated hypertensive patients and 298 normotensive subjects, all of whom underwent an upright posture study for orthostatic blood pressure measurements. Orthostatic hypoten…

Unilateral primary aldosteronism with spontaneous remission after long-term spironolactone therapy.

CONTEXT: Medical treatment with a mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) antagonist, which has produced spontaneous remission of bilateral primary … ertension and hypokalemia for 5 yr. Primary aldosteronism was diagnosed by a furosemide and upright posture test and a captopril challenge test. Computed tomography imaging showed a 5-mm left-sided adrenal mass. Adrenal vein sampling demonstrated overproduction of aldosterone from the left adrenal gland. Long-term treatment with SP normalized the plasma a …

The relationship between the components of pulmonary artery pressure remains constant under all conditions in both health and disease.

BACKGROUND: The relationships among systolic pulmonary artery pressure (SPAP), diastolic pulmonary artery pressure (DPAP), and mean pulmonary artery pressure (MPAP) have been found to be constant in humans breathing air, at rest, while supine. It would be important for those studying the pulmonary circulation if this relationship were maintained under other circumstances, such as change in posture, during exercise, or after pharmacologic manipulation. In particular, it would be useful if the relationship were maintained when treating pulmonary hypertension because this would allow different me…

Pallidal high-frequency deep brain stimulation for camptocormia: an experience of three cases.

INTRODUCTION: The term "camptocormia" describes a forward-flexed posture. It is a condition characterized by severe frontal flexion of the trunk. Recently, camptocormia has been regarded as a form of abdominal segmental dystonia. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a promising therapeutic approach to various types of movement disorders. The authors report the neurological effects of DBS to the bilateral globus pallidum (GPi) in three cases of disabling camptocormia. METHODS: Of the 36 patients with dystonia, three had symptoms similar to that of camptocormia, and all of these patients underwent G…

A double-blind placebo-controlled trial of botulinum toxin B for sialorrhea in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Injections of botulinum toxin A are an effective treatment for sialorrhea in Parkinson's disease (PD). Based on the relatively high rates of dry mouth seen with botulinum toxin B, there is reason to suspect that it may also improve sialorrhea. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether botulinum toxin B (Myobloc; Elan Pharmaceuticals, New York, NY) is a safe and effective treatment for sialorrhea in patients with PD. METHODS: Demographics, PD treatments, head posture, the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), two questionnaires regarding drooling, Visual Analogue Scale, global i…

Stresses exerted in the hindlimb muscles of common chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) during bipedal locomotion.

Recent studies have indicated that chimpanzee bipedality is mechanically inefficient and dynamically unlike that of humans, thus undermining … chimpanzee than for the trained subjects, because the trained chimpanzees walked with a more erect posture. These results may reflect the way in which muscles can develop in response to training, since research on humans has shown that muscle physiological cross-sectional area increases as a result of exercise, resulting in smaller stresses for a given m …

Ultrastructural evidence for a direct excitatory pathway from the nucleus retroambiguus to lateral longissimus and quadratus lumborum motoneurons in the female golden hamster.

During mating, the female golden hamster displays a stereotyped specific receptive posture, characterized by lordosis of the back, elevation of the tail, and extension of the legs. Muscles involved in this posture are thought to be iliopsoas, cutaneus trunci, lateral longissimus (LL), and quadratus lumborum (QL). Lesion studies in rats suggest that mating behavior is controlled by the mesencephalic periaqueductal gray (PAG). The PAG does not project directly to the motoneurons innervating the muscles involved in mating, but is thought to make use of the nucleus retroambiguus (NRA) as relay. Th…

Function of otolith organ in goldfish revealed from analysis of eye movement induced by acceleration.

An otolith organ on ground behave as a detector of both gravity and linear acceleration, and play an important role in controlling posture and eye movement for tilt of the head or translational motion. On the other hand, a gravitational acceleration ingredient to an otolith organ disappears in microgravity environment. However, linear acceleration can be received by otolith organ and produce a sensation that is different from that on Earth. It is suggested that in microgravity signal from the otolith organ may cause abnormality of posture control and eye movement. Therefore, the central nervou…

Idiopathic spasmodic torticollis is not associated with abnormal kinesthetic perception from neck proprioceptive and vestibular afferences.

Proceeding from recent evidence for a sensory involvement in the pathophysiology of idiopathic spasmodic torticollis (ST), we asked whether the abnormal head posture of these patients is associated with distortions of their internal spatial reference frames due to abnormal processing of neck proprioceptive and/or vestibular input. Twelve ST patients were instructed to estimate, by adjusting a light pointer in the dark, their head and trunk mid-sagittal directions (as representatives of ego-centric references) and to reproduce a remembered target location in space (space centric reference). The…
