Artificial penile bodies-from kama sutra to modern times.

INTRODUCTION: Artificial penile nodules are defined as inert objects inserted beneath the skin of the penis to enhance the pleasure of female/male sexual partners during intercourse. AIM: The aim of this article is to present our experience in dealing with artificial penile bodies. We have also reviewed the pertinent literature focusing on social, motivational, and occupational characteristics of individuals adopting this sexual practice, diagnostic dilemmas and the surgical and health side effects of the implantation of artificial penile nodules. METHODS: We performed a computerized MEDLINE

A case report of opium body packer; review of the treatment protocols and mechanisms of poisoning.

ABSTRACT Body packers are people who illegally carry drugs, mostly cocaine as well as opium and/or heroin, concealed within their bodies. The packets are inserted in the mouth, rectum, or vagina in order to get across borders without being detected. In this presentation we report a case of an opium body packer and review the available scientific literature by focusing on mechanisms of toxicity and treatment approach. The patient was a 35-year-old man who had lethargy, respiratory depression, tachycardia, normal blood pressure, hyperthermia, and pinpoint pupils on presentation. No past medical

[Pericardial tuberculosis complicated with heart tamponade as presentation form of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome].

BACKGROUND: Pericardial tuberculosis is an unusual presentation form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, even in HIV-1 infected patients. When complicated with cardiac tamponade the prognosis worsens; therefore, early diagnosis and therapy are essential. METHODS: A cross-sectional and descriptive study was carried out of cases with documented diagnosis of tuberculous pericarditis in a cohort of prisoner patients with tuberculosis in the Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid, during a 4-year period (March 1991-March 1995). The recovery and identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in our clinic were mad

[The epidemiology of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in Barcelona (1981-1991) (I). A descriptive study and time trends].

BACKGROUND: To analyze the epidemiologic situation of AIDS in Barcelona with a descriptive study and a temporal trends analysis. METHODS: Patients detected between 1981 and 1991 were included through a system of active surveillance. Relative risks (RR), odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals and Student's t-test were calculated. The monthly time distribution of cases was analyzed by different adjustments. RESULTS: 2,321 cases were detected, 70.8% of whom were Barcelona residents. The cumulative incidence rate was 94.7/100,000, and the annual rate for 1991 was 23.4/100,000. The active

Implementation evaluation of a Massachusetts pilot program designed to reduce overdose deaths among Black and Latino men returning from incarceration.

INTRODUCTION AND CONTEXT: In response to rising and disproportionate overdose deaths, a Massachusetts agency developed a program model (CARE) that incorporated evidence-based and evidence-informed practices to support recovery and overdose prevention for Black and Latino men returning to their communities from incarceration. Recruitment of Black and Latino men at risk of overdose was intended to begin in local jails prior to release. Key program components included culturally-responsive care, person-centered care, support for social determinants of health (SDoH), community building and social

Evaluation of a Transitional Patient Navigation Protocol for People Living With Hepatitis C Virus in the New York City Jail System.

We evaluated outcomes from a telephone-based transitional patient navigation (TPN) service for people living with hepatitis C virus (HCV) upon returning to the community after incarceration in New York City (NYC) jails. NYC Health + Hospitals/Correctional Health Services offered referrals for TPN services provided by the NYC local health department patient navigation staff. We compared rates of connection to care among people referred for TPN services with those who were not referred. People living with HIV had a higher connection to care rate at three months (65.0% vs 39.8%, p≤.05) and people

A Canadian national study of provincial and territorial correctional workers' suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts.

Correctional workers (CWs) endure several operational stressors (e.g., exposures to potentially psychologically traumatic events) and organisational stressors (e.g., shift work, staff shortages), which are associated with positive screens for mental disorders and self-reports of suicidal behaviours and thus urgently warrant further inquiry. The Canadian Provincial and Territorial Correctional Worker Mental Health and Well-Being Study (CWMH) used an online survey to collect data from Canadian correctional service organisations across all 13 provinces and territories. This national Canadian stud

The Rhode Island transitions clinic: connections to social and healthcare services after release from incarceration.

BACKGROUND: After release from incarceration, individuals are rarely connected to primary care or to social services despite bearing a disproportionate burden of poor health (e.g., chronic illness) and structural determinants of health (e.g., housing instability). The Rhode Island Transitions Clinic (RITC) works to fill this gap, particularly for patients with complex needs, by linking individuals to primary care and social services. However, prior work has not formally assessed how successful the TCN is at connecting patients to social services. Our objective was to assess the relationship be

Rates and causes of death after release from incarceration among 1 471 526 people in eight high-income and middle-income countries: an individual participant data meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Formerly incarcerated people have exceptionally poor health profiles and are at increased risk of preventable mortality when compared with their general population peers. However, not enough is known about the epidemiology of mortality in this population-specifically the rates, causes, and timing of death in specific subgroups and regions-to inform the development of targeted, evidence-based responses. We aimed to document the incidence, timing, causes, and risk factors for mortality after release from incarceration. METHODS: We analysed linked administrative data from the multi-n

Comparison of COVID-19 Symptoms in Correctional Health Care Workers During the Initial and Omicron Surges.

There is a dearth of medical literature that characterizes the experience of correctional health care workers (HCWs) during the COVID-19 pandemic. We performed a retrospective chart review of the results of an ongoing universal SARS-CoV-2 testing program for New Jersey correctional system HCWs and describe their presenting symptoms, perceived exposure, and demographic characteristics during the initial (March 15, 2020, to August 31, 2020) and Omicron (March 1, 2022, to August 31, 2022) COVID-19 surges. Analysis included 123 eligible records. In both surges, nurses had a high proportion of infe

Developing the "Oppression-to-Incarceration Cycle" of Black American and First Nations Australian Trans Women: Applying the Intersectionality Research for Transgender Health Justice Framework.

Trans women are disproportionately incarcerated in the United States and Australia relative to the general population. Stark racial and ethnic disparities in incarceration rates mean that Black American and First Nations Australian trans women are overrepresented in incarceration relative to White and non-Indigenous cisgender and trans people. Informed by the Intersectionality Research for Transgender Health Justice (IRTHJ) framework, the current study drew upon lived experiences of Black American and First Nations Australian trans women to develop a conceptual model demonstrating how interloc

Factors associated with HIV testing among people who inject drugs: a meta-analysis.

HIV testing is the first step to early identification, treatment and management of HIV infection among people involved in high-risk behaviors specifically drug injection. Achieving declines in morbidity and mortality associated with HIV and reducing onward HIV transmission are key to testing and treatment. Evaluating the frequency of HIV testing among people who inject drugs (PWID) provides information that helps to identify missed opportunities to improve the efficacy of testing. This meta-analysis aimed to determine the association between HIV testing and risk taking behaviors among PWID. Tw
