UNLABELLED: A discourse-based, contextual intervention approach for increasing children's word finding proficiency was evaluated. The clinician's role was to (a) identify overt word finding behaviors as they occurred, (2) allow their completion, and (c) provide appropriate feedback, including requests for associative information, requests for clarification, comments to confirm the appropriateness of word choices, and comments to facilitate discourse restructuring. Subjects were three 9-year-old boys with diagnosed language-learning disabilities (LLD) characterized by word finding problems. Int

This article has attempted to establish the importance of considering behavioral disturbances in infancy and early childhood as disturbances of the parent-child relationship. When the psychologic and mental mechanisms of the individual infant are too immature to sustain disturbed behavior across several settings and when the behavioral disturbance seems to be specific to a particular relationship, it is more appropriate to diagnose the pathology as being in the relationship. The article has offered a diagnostic framework of relationship pathology that spans the spectrum from normal variation (

The Transtheoretical, or Stages of Change Model, has been applied to the investigation of help-seeking related to a number of addictive behaviors. Overall, the model has shown to be very important in understanding the process of help-seeking. However, substance abuse rarely exists in isolation from other health, mental health, and social problems. The present work extends the original Stages of Change Model by proposing "Steps of Change" as they relate to entry into substance abuse treatment programs for women. Readiness to make life changes in four domains-domestic violence, HIV sexual risk b

A human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) intervention using indigenous outreach workers was implemented with Hispanic injection drug users (IDUs) and their sexual partners in three locations: Laredo, Texas; San Diego, California; and San Juan, Puerto Rico. A total of 2,169 subjects were contacted, given health education, HIV antibody testing, and follow-up counseling. This article reports on the 1,616 IDUs (75%) who completed the initial and follow-up interviews. The results indicated significant increases in health knowledge on AIDS, decreases in needle

Addressing the mounting plastic waste problem requires system-level solutions, along with interventions that promote behavioral change. In low-resource countries, inadequate, if not absent, waste management systems lead to unsafe disposal practices, including open burning. While theory-informed approaches are essential for identifying enablers and barriers to target behavior change, their application is limited in these settings. Given the lack of a theory-driven synthesis of behavioral strategies to address plastic waste, this systematic review aimed to: (1) synthesize behavioral intervention

INTRODUCTION: Mental health problems, hazardous drinking, and unhealthy behaviors are global concerns among medical residents, particularly in resource-limited regions such as Latin America. Long hours, heavy workloads, and stigma increase the risk of depression, anxiety, and substance misuse. This study assessed the prevalence of mental health symptoms, alcohol use, and health behaviors among residents in Ecuador.
METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 307 residents at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, after inviting all 1,122 enrolled residents to partic

PROBLEM: Maternal-fetal attachment (MFA) plays a critical role in determining maternal health and influencing child developmental outcomes. However, structured behavioral interventions designed to enhance MFA are seldom included in antenatal care practices.
BACKGROUND: MFA forms the foundation of the maternal-child bond. This early relationship is critical for maternal mental health and serves as a precursor to the child's socio-emotional and behavioral development.
AIM: This study aimed to determine whether a behavioral communication intervention could enhance maternal-fetal attachment.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is the emotional experience arising from the discrepancy between an individual's desired and actual social relationships. Despite a solid rationale for expecting high levels of loneliness in eating disorders (EDs), this construct has been relatively underexplored.
AIMS: The present study aimed to compare levels of loneliness between people with EDs and healthy controls (HCs), assess the possible differences according to predominant pathological eating behaviors, and explore the variables associated with loneliness.
METHODS: A total of 124 individuals with EDs and 134 H

This study examined whether adolescent depressive and anxiety symptoms were differentially associated with alcohol use behaviors, and how these associations were explained by genetic, shared, and nonshared environmental influences. Participants were from the Nonshared Environment and Adolescent Development project of same-sex twin/sibling pairs from 720 families. Twin/sibling depressive and anxiety symptoms were measured by self-report at Time 1 (Mage = 13.71 years, range = 9-18 years). Alcohol initiation and alcohol use severity were measured by self-report three years after Time 1 (age range

OBJECTIVE: By focusing on a person-centered approach using latent class analyses (LCA), this study examined the patterns of sexual victimization among children and adolescents in South Korea and compared the psycho-behavioral outcomes of these classes.
METHODS: Participants were 546 females aged 6-17, including 117 sexual victimization survivors and 429 non-victims in South Korea. LCA, an analysis of covariance, and Bonferroni post-hoc tests were conducted. Psychological and behavioral outcomes were measured using the Korean version of the Child Behavior Checklist 6-18 and the Youth Self Repo

Communicative deficits are a core feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that present early in development and persist into adulthood. The majority of studies focus exclusively on early life communication, therefore the mechanisms underlying adult communicative behaviors are unclear. The Cntnap2 gene is implicated in the onset of ASD deficits and is specifically vital for vocal communicative behaviors, however, its effects on adult communication are not known. To address this problem, we assessed vocal communicative behaviors known as ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in Cntnap2 wildtype (WT)

Biological anthropology seeks to understand humans from an evolutionary perspective. Namely, what makes humans different from other animals, and how did we get this way? Many relevant traits are physical, but many others are behavioral. For example, when and why did our species develop complex cognition, enduring bonds, and intense cooperation? Given the importance of behavior, biological anthropologists have a long history of turning to our primate relatives to generate hypotheses about the evolutionary processes shaping humans. Indeed, primate behavior is foundational to our field. But not a

BACKGROUND: Although the link between alcohol involvement and behavioral phenotypes (e.g. impulsivity, negative affect, executive function [EF]) is well-established, the directionality of these associations, specificity to stages of alcohol involvement, and extent of shared genetic liability remain unclear. We estimate longitudinal associations between transitions among alcohol milestones, behavioral phenotypes, and indices of genetic risk.
METHODS: Data came from the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (n = 3681; ages 11-36). Alcohol transitions (first: drink, intoxication, alc

OBJECTIVE: Impulsive aggression in youth is a significant clinical and public health concern, spanning multiple diagnostic categories and causing significant psychosocial impairment. To advance its assessment and treatment, recent research has focused on developing an empirically derived nosology that can distinguish impulsive aggression from other common childhood problems. The current study is a secondary analysis examining the associations between this empirically defined form of impulsive aggression, other psychiatric symptom dimensions, and behavioral approach and inhibition motivation of

Anxiety is a common psychological disease which can induce severe social burdens. Searching methods that prevent the onset of anxiety is of great significance for ameliorating the social and individual problems induced by this type of disease. In this study, we investigated how innate immune pre-stimulation influences the anxiety-like behaviors in chronically stressed mice. Our results showed that a single injection of an innate immune stimulant lipopolysaccharide (LPS) at the dose of 50, 100, and 500 μg/kg 1 day before stress exposure prevented chronic social defeat stress (CSDS)-induced anxi

OBJECTIVE: Emotion recognition is an important aspect of emotion processing, which is needed for appropriate social behavior and normal socialization. Previous studies in adults with antisocial personality disorder or psychopathy, in those convicted of criminal behavior, or in children with conduct disorder show impairments in negative emotion recognition. The present study investigated affective facial and prosody recognition in a sample of children at high risk of developing future criminal behavior.
METHODS: Participants were 8- to 12-year-old children at high risk of developing criminal b

Up to 90% of individuals with Huntington's disease (HD)-a progressive, inherited neurodegenerative disorder-experience apathy. Apathy is particularly debilitating because it is marked by a reduction in goal-directed behaviors, including self-care, social interactions, and mobility. The objective of this study was to examine relationships between variables of apathy, functional status, physical function, cognitive function, behavioral status/emotional function, and health-related quality of life. Clinician-rated measures of physical, cognitive, and behavioral function, including one clinician-r

OBJECTIVE: Being physically active has broad health benefits for people with osteoarthritis (OA), including pain relief. Increasing physical activity (PA) requires reducing time in other behaviors within a fixed 24-h day. We examined the potential benefits in relation to pain from trading time in one type of wake or sleep behavior for another.
METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, we used isotemporal logistic regression models to examine the estimated effect on pain from replacing time in one behavior with equal time in another, controlling for sociodemographic and health factors. Stratified
