INTRODUCTION: The older generation of high thickness metal-backed glenoid prostheses had a high failure rate. The goal of our study was to analyze the medium-term clinical and radiological results of a technically modified generation of metal backed glenoids with 35% decrease in thickness.

BACKGROUND: Decellularized tissue-engineered heart valves (TEHVs) are under investigation as alternative for current heart valve prostheses with the potential to rapidly repopulate with cells within the body. Ideally, these valves are stented for transapical or minimally invasive delivery. It is unclear if and how the matrix of these valves remodels under in vivo hemodynamic loading conditions and in the presence of a stent. Here, we study the evolution of collagen orientation and tissue maturation in the wall of stented decellularized TEHVs with time after implantation.

INTRODUCTION: Pectus excavatum is a wall deformity that often warrants medical evaluation. In most cases, it's a purely visual aesthetic alteration, while in others, it comes with symptoms. Several surgical techniques have been described, but their outcomes are difficult to assess due to the heterogeneity of presentations and the lack of long-term follow-up. We present our experience as thoracic surgeons, assessing correction as either structural (remodeling of the thoracic cage through open surgery) or aesthetic (design and implantation of a customized 3D prosthesis).

Hip prosthetic loosening is often difficult to detect at an early stage, and there has been uncertainty for a long time as to when the loosening occurs and thus to the basic causes. By comparing different diagnostic methods, we found that loosening is best defined as prosthetic migration and measured by radiostereometric analysis. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a rapidly-evolving technology for patients with severe, calcific aortic stenosis. A cohort of 20 patients with delayed priapism who underwent treatment at the Emergency Department of our academic referral centers between January 2002 and April 2010 was studied. During a period of 25 years (1977 to 2001), 13 fractures of an alumina component were recorded retrospectively. BACKGROUND: Valvular heart disease in developing countries resulting from rheumatic fever is disabling and if untreated leads to congestive heart failure and death. Valve replacement has remained the procedure of choice for advanced valve disease.
METHODS: Between 1973 and 1997, 456 patients underwent combined mitral and aortic valve replacement. In light of our favorable earlier experience the Starr-Edwards ball valve prostheses were implanted in 90% and 72.8% of mitral and aortic positions, respectively. From 1981 to 1983, we implanted Bioceram type-4 and type-5 prostheses in 61 hips in 54 patients with osteoarthritis secondary to acetabular dysplasia, congenital subluxation, or congenital dislocation of the hip. Cancer rehabilitation is becoming more of a focus for the field of physiatry due to increased longevity and the side effects of treatment.
