Fractional CO2 laser versus 1064-nm long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser for inflammatory acne vulgaris treatment: a randomized clinical trial.

Acne vulgaris is challenging to treat for several individuals. Laser therapy may be a desirable alternative to traditional therapies with limited success. This study aimed to assess efficacy of fractional CO2 laser versus Nd:YAG laser for acne vulgaris therapy. Thirty cases with acne vulgaris underwent both fractional CO2 laser and Nd: YAG laser treatments in a randomized split face design at a 14-day interval for four sessions. The clinical efficacy was evaluated by counting acne lesions and utilizing the Global Acne Severity Scale (GEA Scale). GEAs decreased significantly after both fraction

Effectiveness and safety of high-voltage pulsed radiofrequency to treat patients with primary trigeminal neuralgia: a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a debilitating pain disorder that still lacks an ideal treatment option. Pulsed radiofrequency (PRF), especially with high output voltage, is a novel and minimally invasive technique. PRF is regarded a promising treatment option for TN patients who respond poorly to medical treatment; however, the available evidence still lacks high quality randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Our study aimed to evaluate the long-term (1 year and 2 years) effects and safety of high-voltage PRF in primary TN patients and provide stronger evidence for TN treatment options…

Phytoplankton Producer Species and Transformation of Released Compounds over Time Define Bacterial Communities following Phytoplankton Dissolved Organic Matter Pulses.

Phytoplankton-bacterium interactions are mediated, in part, by phytoplankton-released dissolved organic matter (DOMp). Two factors that shape the bacterial community accompanying phytoplankton are (i) the phytoplankton producer species, defining the initial composition of released DOMp, and (ii) the DOMp transformation over time. We added phytoplankton DOMp from the diatom Skeletonema marinoi and the cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus marinus MIT9312 to natural bacterial communities from the eastern Mediterranean and determined the bacterial responses over a time course of 72 h in terms of cell nu

Previous Lumbar Spine Surgery Decreases the Therapeutic Efficacy of Dorsal Root Ganglion Pulsed Radiofrequency in Patients with Chronic Lumbosacral Radicular Pain.

Chronic lumbosacral radicular pain (CLRP) as a possible adverse consequence of lumbar spine surgery represents a serious medical challenge. Pulsed radiofrequency of dorsal root ganglion (PRF-DRG) treatment is known to be effective in alleviating CLRP. This retrospective study compares the efficacy of a single CT-guided PRF-DRG procedure in the treatment of unilateral CLRP between patients without (non-PSS) and with (PSS) previous lumbar spine surgery. Non-PSS and PSS groups included 30 and 20 patients, respectively. Outcomes (pain intensity and disability) were evaluated by means of the visual…

Comparison between the efficacy of Intense Pulsed Light (I.P.L.) versus Photo-Dynamic Therapy (P.D.T.) with methylene-blue in the treatment of psoriatic nails.

BACKGROUND: Nail affection is seen in up to 50 % of patients with skin psoriasis, although up to 5% of nail psoriatic patients do not complain of skin affection. Various treatment options are emerging for nail psoriasis such as intense pulsed light Tawfik, 2014). Methylene-blue (M.B) is a phenothiazine dye which is suggested to mediate cell cyto-toxicity by the generation of hydroxyl-radicals which change the intra-cellular calcium homeo-static mechanisms (Lee and Wurster, 1995). OBJECTIVES: Evaluation and comparing the efficacy of I.P.L. and methylene-blue assisted photo-dynamic therapy for …

Management of epistaxis in hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) patients using pulsed dye laser and the effect of withholding treatment during the COVID pandemic.

Using a patient survey, pulsed dye laser (PDL) treatment of epistaxis for hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) patients was evaluated after initial referral. Subsequently, due to the COVID pandemic, a natural experimental set-up allowed assessment of an enforced withdrawal of treatment. A total of 34 subjects were identified as undergoing PDL for HHT-related epistaxis. They were surveyed to look at the effectiveness of PDL treatment after initial referral and at the effect of delay to treatment during COVID on epistaxis and the associated quality of life. The survey also examined the c…

Comparing the efficacy and safety of short-term spinal cord stimulation and pulsed radiofrequency for zoster-related pain: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) is a commonly used method for the treatment of zoster-related pain in the clinic. However, PRF therapy has a high recurrence rate and many adverse reactions. Recent studies have shown that short-term spinal cord stimulation (stSCS) can effectively alleviate zoster-related pain. Due to the lack of evidence, it is unclear whether stSCS is superior to PRF in the efficacy of treating zoster-related pain. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of stSCS and PRF for zoster-related pain. METHODS: We searched seven electronic databases f…

Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor strains linked to global cholera show region-specific patterns by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis.

Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor, causative agent of the ongoing seventh cholera pandemic, is native to the aquatic environment of the Ganges Delta, Bay of Bengal (GDBB). Recent studies traced pandemic strains to the GDBB and proposed global spread of cholera had occurred via intercontinental transmission. In the research presented here, NotI-digested genomic DNA extracted from V. cholerae O1 clinical and environmental strains isolated in Bangladesh during 20042014 was analyzed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Results of cluster analysis showed 94.67% of the V. cholerae strains belonged to…

Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound ameliorates angiotensin II-induced cardiac fibrosis by alleviating inflammation via a caveolin-1-dependent pathway.

OBJECTIVES: Cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis are major pathological manifestations observed in left ventricular remodeling induced by angiotensin II (AngII). Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has been reported to ameliorate cardiac dysfunction and myocardial fibrosis in myocardial infarction (MI) through mechano-transduction and its downstream pathways. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether LIPUS could exert a protective effect by ameliorating AngII-induced cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis and if so, to further elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms. METHODS: We used Ang…

Does interval time between pulsed dye laser treatments for port-wine stains influence outcome? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The pulsed dye laser (PDL) is the standard treatment for port-wine stains (PWS). Maximal improvement occurs after multiple treatment sessions; however, the optimal treatment interval has yet to be determined. The aim of this study was to review whether there is an association between PDL treatment interval and outcome of PWS. Six databases were searched by three reviewers for publications investigating treatment of PWS with PDL. The 75% improvement rates (75IR) were extracted for quantitative analysis. Meta-regression was used to investigate the association between treatment intervals and 75IR…

Effect of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound on orofacial sensory disturbance following inferior alveolar nerve injury: Role of neurotrophin-3 signaling.

Percutaneous treatment of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) to the site of inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) transection promotes functional regeneration, but the detailed mechanism is unknown. We examined the involvement of neurotrophin-3 (NT-3), which primarily binds with tropomyosin receptor kinase C (TrkC), in functional transected IAN regeneration following LIPUS treatment in rats. Daily LIPUS treatment to the transected IAN was performed, and the mechanical sensitivity of the facial skin was measured for 14 d. On day 5 after IAN transection, the expression of NT-3 in the transected IAN…
