The radiation doses received by patients during 41 barium meal (BM) and 42 barium enema (BE) examinations in two Greek hospitals are presented. Radiation dose was measured in terms of the dose area product (DAP). The effective dose and doses to certain organs were estimated using the ODS-60 software. Mean total DAP values were found to be 25 +/- 11 Gy cm2 for BM and 60 +/- 35 Gy cm2 for BE examinations, whereas the estimated mean values of effective dose were 8.6 +/- 4.0 and 24 +/- 16 mSv respectively. Intra-articular radiation synovectomy is an established and well documented therapy in rheumatology. A rare side effect is necrosis of surrounding tissue caused by leakage of the radionuclide.We describe the case of a 34-year old patient with rheumatoid arthritis who developed skin necrosis 4 weeks after an intra-articular radiation synovectomy of the left wrist. When these lesions are recognized early surgical therapy or hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be initiated.

Stereotactic radiosurgery, or SRS, uses focused beams of gamma radiation targeted to specific areas of the body and has been used for multiple forms of non-small cell lung cancer. In this article, the authors describe two incidental cases of osteonecrosis in patients who had previously undergone stereotactic radiosurgery with recurrence of tumor. Radiation cystitis (RC) is a common side-effect of radiation to the pelvis. Their clinical appearance as well as their degree of expression is manifold, as are the therapeutic options. However, in the absence of randomized examinations, recommendations are difficult. We differentiate between oral, systemic therapies, intravesical instillations and interventions as well as interventional, radiological and, as an ultima ratio, surgical treatments. This article provides an overview of the different treatment options with particular emphasis on the conservative-interventional therapy options.

Personnel exposure to radiation was investigated during radiological procedures where x-ray shielding is particularly difficult. Ten percutaneous transhepatic cholangiographies, four percutaneous transhepatic portographies, and four coronary angiographies are included in the study. Exposure to radiation was measured at several anatomical sites for both the radiologist and the assisting nurse. Effective dose equivalents as proposed by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) were estimated from the registered absorbed doses.

Ultraviolet radiation is an established skin carcinogen. By analysing the seasonality of melanoma diagnoses, the effect of this risk factor can be examined indirectly. However, previous studies yielded conflicting results, because of vastly differing analytical methods and diverse study designs. Therefore, to validate the findings by Chaillol and colleagues based on 3868 melanoma diagnoses from Northern Ireland, we used an identical methodology to examine the seasonal effects on monthly incidences of 11,901 cutaneous malignant melanoma cases registered from 2003 until 2008 in Bavaria, Germany.
