Patients with MRI-proved acute painful vertebral fractures in whom conservative pain management fails are frequently referred for vertebroplasty. This study investigated the effects of treating osteoporosis on the mortality rate of patients with MRI-proved acute osteoporosis-related vertebral fractures who had undergone vertebroplasty. We retrospectively reviewed the cases of osteoporosis patients with MRI-proved acute vertebral fractures who had been treated with vertebroplasty from January 2001 to December 2007. The long-term outcomes of the patients who received antiosteoporotic therapy wer

Late presentation of congenital diaphragmatic hernia is 5-30% of all congenital diaphragma hernia cases. It can present as Morgagni, Bochdalek and paraesophageal hernia. Misdiagnosis can result in significant morbiditiy. A 17-month-old girl presented with vomiting and abdominal pain. On physical examination, circulatory disturbance, cyanosis, abdominal distantion were present. Her O2 saturation was 60% and she was tachycardic (180 bpm) and tachypneic (58 bpm) with hypotension (60/35 mmhg). Patient's heart and mediastinum were shifted into the right hemithorax on the chest X-ray. Bowel loops in

A 65-year-old man was referred to our hospital following repetitive chest pain. Invasive coronary angiography showed an intermediate stenosis of the proximal left anterior descending artery (LAD), and a coronary fistula originating distal to the stenosis draining into the main pulmonary artery. To evaluate the functional abnormality arising from the stenosis and coronary steal due to the fistula, fractional flow reserve (FFR) was measured using a pressure wire with pullback recording. The FFR value was 0.74 at the distal LAD, 0.78 distal to the fistula, 0.81 proximal to the fistula (distal to

Angiography with a pre-diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome was performed in a 76-year-old female patient presenting to another hospital with symptoms of chest pain and syncope. Upon determination of type III aortic dissection, the patient was referred to our clinic. On CT angiography, the ascending aortic diameter was 57 mm and no dissection flap was observed. There was a filling defect suggestive of intimo-intimal intussusception at the level of the aortic arch, occlusion of the left arteria carotid communis, and a double-channel aorta extending from the left subclavian artery to the iliac a

An 80-year-old man was seen by his family doctor with chief complaints of fatigue and loss of appetite. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy showed a type 2 tumor of the lower thoracic esophagus, and the patient was referred to our hospital. Squamous cell carcinoma was diagnosed on biopsy, and computed tomography (CT) showed multiple pulmonary metastases. The patient was diagnosed with Stage Ⅳ thoracic esophageal carcinoma, and was started on combined chemotherapy with 5-FU plus CDDP. Seven days after the start of chemotherapy, the patient developed mild intermittent pain. By day 18, the blood tes

BACKGROUND: Pylephlebitis is a septic thrombophlebitis of the portal vein due to an intra-abdominal infection in the drainage area of this vein.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe the case of a 77-year-old woman who presented at the emergency department with fever, cold chills and a two-month history of right upper quadrant abdominal pain. She was diagnosed with pylephlebitis without a clear infection site. Treatment consisted of antibiotics and anticoagulation. Two months after discharge she was again referred to the emergency department, this time with rectal blood loss. On endoscopy a cocktail

We report 3 patients with the rare complication of an indwelling urethral catheter misdirected into the ureter. This is the largest series to date. Patients were referred to us for a variety of reasons following exchange of their chronic indwelling urinary catheters. CT in all cases demonstrated the urinary catheters residing in the left ureter. The ages of the patients were 37, 67 and 81 years old. All patients suffered from neurogenic bladder. Two patients were female, one was male, and 2 of the 3 had a sensory disorder inhibiting their pain response. The catheters were replaced with open-en

Orbital inflammation is a generic term encompassing inflammatory pathologies affecting all structures within the orbit : anterior (involvement up to the posterior aspect of the globe), diffuse (involvement of intra- and/or extraconal fat), apical (involvement of the posterior orbit), myositis (involvement of only the extraocular muscles), dacryoadenitis (involvement of the lacrimal gland). We distinguish between specific inflammation and non-specific inflammation, commonly referred to as idiopathic inflammation. Specific orbital inflammation corresponds to a secondary localization of a "genera

A 43-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for fever, general fatigue and left flank abdominal pain during the last two weeks. A blood test showed severe inflammation, and computed tomography (CT) study of the abdomen with intravenous contrast revealed swelling and irregular enhancement in the upper left kidney. Initially, we diagnosed it as xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis and treated it with antibiotics. A percutaneous renal biopsy was performed because the white blood cell count remained elevated after the treatment. Histopathologic examination revealed a carcinoma. Therefore, we pe

Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal nematode of humans that infects tens of millions of people worldwide. It is a rarely reported parasitic infestation in Turkey. Disseminated strongyloidiosis may develop in patients with immunodeficiencies. S. stercoralis hyperinfection is often accompanied by sepsis or meningitis with enteric organisms. Glucocorticoid treatment is one of the conditions most specifically associated with triggering hyperinfection, but cases have been reported in association with hematologic malignancy, malnutrition, and AIDS. Anthelminthic agents such as ivermectin have

A five-year-old entire male Tibetan Terrier was referred for left-sided periorbital swelling and blepharospasm 4 days following ipsilateral maxillary tooth extraction. Examination of the left eye revealed mild exophthalmos, pain on retropulsion, and absent menace response and pupillary light reflexes. Examination of the posterior segment was not possible owing to the anterior segment pathology. Differential diagnoses considered were iatrogenic globe penetration and peribulbar abscess/cellulitis. Ocular ultrasound was consistent with a penetrating wound to the globe. Treatment with systemic pre

Encrusted cystitis is characterized by chronic inflammation of the bladder with encrustation of the mucosa, induced by urea-splitting bacterial infection. However, encrusted cystitis in itself is not well known. We report a case of encrusted cystitis causing postrenal failure. An 81-year-old man with pneumonia complained of pollakisuria, micturition pain, and gross hematuria. Bladder calculi were found, and transurethral lithotripsy was performed. However, because his symptoms did not improve, he was referred to our hospital. His urine pH was 8.5, and urine culture grew Corynebacterium and Pro

Congenital anomalies of coronary arteries, albeit rare, may be significant contributors to angina pectoris, hemodynamic abnormalities, and sudden cardiac death. A 47-year-old man referred to us with atypical chest pain. Electrocardiography demonstrated no significant ischemic changes, but cardiac troponin I test was positive. The patient underwent coronary angiography, which revealed a single coronary artery from the left Valsalva sinus. In addition, the left anterior descending (LAD) and the left circumflex (LCx) arteries were in normal position with significant stenosis in the mid-portion of

A 61-year-old man was referred to us for investigation of acute abdominal pain. Computed tomography showed a 5.9 × 5.3 × 5.0 cm lump of food residue in the jejunum, and a large amount of free air and ascites around the liver and right paracolic gutter. He underwent emergency laparotomy for suspected peritonitis from perforation by a foreign body in the small intestine. We identified purulent exudate in the abdominal cavity and perforation of a jejunal cystic mass, attached ~40 cm from Treitz's ligament at the anti-mesenteric side of the jejunum. Based on a diagnosis of jejunal duplication with

We report a 47-year-old man with diabetics presenting with massive haemoptysis. Physical examination showed moderate pallor, but was otherwise normal. Evaluation showed normal bleeding and clotting parameters. Aerobic cultures of sputum samples and acid-fast staining were negative. CT showed fusiform aneurysmal dilation of the descending thoracic aorta compressing the left main bronchus with secondary collapse of the left lower and lingular lobes. Massive haemoptysis was attributed to probable erosion of the aneurysm into the left main bronchus. Retrospective questioning failed to elicit patho

A 70-year-old woman with back pain and breathlessness was referred to our hospital for suspected myocardial infarction. Coronary angiogram was normal and endomyocardial biopsy showed inflammatory cell infiltrates consisting of eosinophils and multinucleated giant cells. The clinical course was hemodynamically fulminant, but steroid therapy improved the cardiac function. Interestingly, this patient had a past history of sarcoidosis. We diagnosed this case with idiopathic giant cell myocarditis (IGCM) from its clinical course. However, whether IGCM and cardiac sarcoidosis belong to the same hist

Superior sulcus tumours (or Pancoast tumours) are non-small-cell lung carcinomas presenting with specific symptoms and requiring a specific approach to treatment due to their location in the pulmonary apex. Early recognition is rare as a result of the low incidence and the relatively late occurrence of symptoms .Shoulder pain, with or without radiation to the ipsilateral arm or hand, and Horner's syndrome are often presenting symptoms. The current standard of care for patients with resectable tumours is pre-operative chemoradiotherapy, followed by resection of the tumour and affected surroundi
