Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis. Radiological and pathological study of a specimen with ununited clavicular fracture.

Anatomico-radiological study of a sternocostoclavicular mass taken post-mortem from a man whose clinical history had shown bilateral sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis (SCCH) with plantar pustulosis for 27 years. The clavicle showed an ununited fracture attributable to a trauma sustained five years earlier. Both clavicular segments showed active remodelling with intraosseous granulation tissue and periosteal metaplastic ossification. The sternocostoclavicular region was fused in a bony block in which there were no signs of remodelling activity. The first rib and the distal extremity of the cla

Congenital malformations in a common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) similar to human 13-trisomy syndrome.

This paper describes the finding of a number of malformations in a live-born common marmoset. The malformations included microphthalmia, ocular hypertelorism, cleft lip and palate and polydactyly. The findings are consistent with and strongly suggest chromosome trisomy similar to that which has been seen in man.

Surgical correction of Goldenhar's syndrome.

Goldenhar's syndrome is a variant of hemifacial microsomia - one of the more common congenital syndromes of the first and second arch. The Goldenhar's type is characterized by varying degrees of underdevelopment of craniofacial structures. The major deformities involve the mandible and the ear; but they also include the orbit and vertebral column, specific defects pathognomonic of this condition. Medical management requires reconstructive surgery of which treatment must take into consideration the timing of surgery and the effects of surgery upon the growth and development of the poorly formed

[Contusion of the lung and intrapulmonary hematoma (author's transl)].

After a survey of possible lesions caused by obtuse traumata of the osseus thorax, the lung, the heart and the vascular system the radiological changes following the appearance of intrapulmonary hematoma after contusion of the lung are discussed by means of two case histories. The possibility of sucking off the blood coagula by bronchoskopy with the aid of Friedel's catheter in the case of big hematomas is suggested. A definition of contusion of the lung compared with the shocklung is attempted.

Histological analysis of undecalcified thin sections of archeological bone.

Archeological bone often lends itself to histological analysis. Sections from bone samples approximately one thousand years old may show as much structural preservation as those only a few hundred years old; hence, it appears that the degree of preservation is not necessarily affected by time. Enough structure may be preserved to permit the diagnosis of metabolic disorders of bone which might go undetected by other methods. This type of analysis can be utilized to accept or reject individual remains suspected of being pathological on the basis of other less precise diagnostic techniques.

Content validation of the Myelofibrosis Symptom Assessment Form version 4.0 (MFSAF v4.0) in Janus kinase inhibitor-experienced patients with myelofibrosis.

Patients with myelofibrosis (MF) experience debilitating symptoms that negatively impact health-related quality of life and functioning. The Myelofibrosis Symptom Assessment Form version 4.0 (MFSAF v4.0) is a 7-item questionnaire assessing the burden of MF symptoms, including fatigue, night sweats, pruritus, abdominal discomfort, pain under the left ribs, early satiety, and bone pain. This study evaluated the content validity of the MFSAF v4.0 in Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor-experienced participants with MF. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 20 symptomatic (MFSAF Total Symptom Score ≥…

Chronic Perfluorooctanoic Acid Exposure in Young Adult Zebrafish Affects Scale and Internal Skeleton Bone Metabolism, as Well as Offspring Bone Development.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is one of the most extensively investigated per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a class of highly fluo … keletal analysis revealed a series of malformations across multiple sites, including the vertebrae, ribs, fins, operculum, and branchial arches. The viability and general development of embryos derived from PFOA-treated parents showed no significant variations compared to controls, despite accumulating PFOA. Nevertheless, osteogenesis was specifically …

Non-migratory mode of ventral body wall closure: Primary mid-ventral covering is replaced by prospective definitive body wall.

BACKGROUND: During ventral body wall closure in amniotes, the skeleton and muscles such as sternum, ribs, and pectoral muscles undergo a striking positional change from the dorso-lateral to mid-ventral region. The precise process of ventral body wall closure has poorly been explored. We have presented and examined two opposing models: the invading closure model, in which musculoskeletal components infiltrate into the mid-ventral tissue, and the replacing closure model, in which the original mid-ventral tissue degenerates to be replaced by the dorso-lateral body wall. RESULTS: We developed a n…

Processing-Microstructure-Performance Relations in Thermoformed Auxetic Hyperelastic Foams with Enhanced Energy Absorption Capacity.

Auxetic (negative Poisson's ratio) foams with reentrant cell structures exhibit enhanced mechanical properties such as superior strength, energy absorption, and fracture resistance, compared to their nonauxetic counterparts. A well-established method for inducing auxeticity in cellular solids involves permanently changing the cell ribs that are buckled under compressive loads. This permanent change can be achieved by heating a deformed foam for a specific duration. In this study, a thermoforming process is developed to convert closed-cell hyperelastic polyurea foams into auxetic structures. Th…
