Seminal plasma effects on sperm handling and female fertility.

The components of ruminant seminal plasma and their influence on the fertility of spermatozoa are reviewed. Seminal plasma can both inhibit and stimulate sperm function and fertility through the multifunctional actions of organic and inorganic components. These effects are now better understood because the composition of the seminal plasma, including its protein content and that of other structures, specifically membrane vesicles, has been clarified. Spermatozoa gain motility and fertilizing capacity as they transit the epididymis under the influence of factors produced by that organ. At ejacu

Localization and secretion of epidermal growth factor in the parotid gland and its intragastric kinetics in sheep.

Ruminants secrete a large quantity of saliva that is rich in electrolytes; however, it remains unclear whether their parotid saliva contains epidermal growth factor (EGF). The present study was set up to examine the distribution of EGF and transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha) in the ovine parotid and submandibular glands and the salivary secretion of EGF-like binding activity (EGF-LBA) as the sum of EGF and TGF-alpha in conscious sheep. We also measured changes in the intragastric concentration of EGF-LBA in the ovine rumen and abomasum, and examined the effect of bilateral diversion o…

Psychoendocrine antecedents of persistent first-episode major depression in adolescents: a community-based longitudinal enquiry.

BACKGROUND: This longitudinal study investigated whether patterns of cortisol and DHEA that precede the onset of an episode of major depression influence time to recovery in a community ascertained sample of adolescents meeting DSM-IV criteria for major depression. METHOD: Sixty adolescents aged 12 to 16 at high risk for psychiatric disorders were followed for 24 months. At 12 months, 30 had experienced an episode of major depression and 30 had not. The second follow-up repeated the psychiatric evaluations with all participants completing the Kiddie-SADS Schedule for Schizophrenia and Affecti

Sugar beet mash silage as a component of a total-mixed-ration for dairy cows--effects on parameters of digestion and animal performance.

Sugar beet mash silage (BMS) was offered in amounts up to 35% of DM to dairy cows as a component of a total-mixed-ration (TMR). Barley and molasses in the control ration were replaced by BMS half in ration BMS 1/2 and in total in ration BMS 1/1 on the basis of the calculated contents of net energy for lactation. Two trials were carried out. In trial I each ration was tested on parameters of rumen fermentation and digestibility of crude nutrients using 4 Holstein cows with rumen fistula. Chewing activity was tested on 2 Holstein cows for each ration. With the BMS rations the ruminal NH3 concent

Feeding oleamide to lactating Jersey cows 1. Effects on lactation performance and milk fatty acid composition.

Oleamide was previously reported to resist ruminal biohydrogenation and elevate milk oleic acid concentration when fed to lactating Holstein cows. To determine if Jersey cows responded similarly to oleamide, four lactating Jersey cows (mean 417 kg of body weight and 64 days in milk) were fed four diets in a 4x4 Latin square with 2-wk periods. Diets were total mixed ration containing 47% corn silage and 53% concentrate (dry matter basis) and were supplemented with no added fat (control), or with 3.5% added fat from either higholeic canola oil, a commercial source of oleamide, or oleamide synthe

Whole cottonseeds or a combination of soybeans and soybeans hulls in the diets of lactating dairy cows.

Whole raw soybeans and soybean hulls were evaluated as a dietary replacement for whole cottonseed as determined by rumination and total chewing activity, milk fat percentage, and efficiency of 4% fat-corrected milk (FCM) production. Twenty-six Holstein dairy cows (14 multiparous; 35 +/- 12 d of lactation) were assigned randomly to one of two total mixed rations (TMR) for 15 wk. The whole cottonseed TMR and the soybean plus soybean hull TMR contained 40% of a 45:55 mixture of alfalfa and corn silages (dry matter basis) and either 15% cottonseed or 15% soybeans, 8% soybean hulls, and 0.7% sodium

Compressed baled alfalfa hay for primiparous and multiparous dairy cows.

Compressed baled alfalfa hay was fed to cows, and the effects on productivity, chewing activities, and digestion were measured using a replicated 4 x 4 Latin square design. Cows received second-cutting alfalfa hay (20% CP; 40% NDF) from either compressed or standard small rectangular bales at two forage to concentrate ratios (35:65 and 65:35, DM basis). Compressed hay did not affect milk yield, although milk fat content was higher (2.90 vs. 2.68%). Higher concentrate diets increased milk yield (32.2 vs. 28.3 kg/d), lowered milk fat (2.66 vs. 2.91%), and increased milk protein (3.16 vs. 2.99%)

Reticular contraction attributes and passage of digesta from the ruminoreticulum in cattle fed roughage diets.

Four nonlactating Holstein dairy cows (BW = 692 +/- 49 kg) were used in a 4 x 4 Latin square design experiment to determine how changes in attributes of reticular contractions were related to changes in passage of digesta from the ruminoreticulum in cattle fed a forage-based diet. Frequencies of reticular contraction during eating, ruminating, and resting phases of the feeding cycle were not affected (P = .09; P = .07; P = .09, respectively) by feeding level. Duration and amplitude of reticular contractions both increased linearly during eating (P = .03; P = .01), ruminating (P = .01; P = .02)

Pain Sensitivity, Pain Catastrophizing and Fear-Avoidance in Adult Runners: Injured vs. Uninjured Comparisons and Multivariable Associations.

PURPOSE: Personal beliefs about pain, such as pain catastrophizing and fear-avoidance, are believed to influence central pain processing, but their relationship to pain sensitivity in injured runners remains unclear. This study examined whether injured runners exhibit greater pain sensitivity, pain catastrophizing and fear-avoidance beliefs compared to uninjured runners, and explored the extent to which pain catastrophizing and fear-avoidance predict pain sensitivity. METHODS: A total of 235 adult runners (18-76 years) who had been running consistently (1-3 times/week for ≥ 3 months) were inc

Effects of replacing rye silage with mixed rye-vetch-straw silage on feed intake, milk production, digestion processes, and blood metabolites in dairy cows.

Mixed silage of whole catch crops-crops grown between 2 main crops-and straw might be an alternative forage source for dairy cattle in times of forage shortage but is still understudied. This research sought to evaluate the effects of feeding mixed rye-vetch-straw silage (RVSS) in replacement of whole crop rye silage on feed intake, ECM yield, milk composition, nutrient digestibility, and metabolic variables of dairy cows. The study was a crossover trial with 10 Holstein and 4 Simmental cows (average of 593 kg BW and 53 DIM at the start of the trial) tested in 2 experimental runs of 4 wk each,

Latent profile analysis and influencing factors of post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in young and middle-aged spinal cord injury patients.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has a profound impact on the physiological, psychological, social functioning, and occupational development of young and middle-aged spinal cord injury (SCI) patients, with a multitude of factors influencing its manifestation. However, the majority of current studies treat all spinal cord injury patients as a homogeneous group, thereby ignoring the intrinsic characteristics of patients and the inter-individual heterogeneity that exists. The aim of this study was to identify distinct subgroups of young and middle-aged SCI patients according to t

Predictive modelling of deviation from expected milk yield in transition cows on automatic milking systems.

The transition period is a pivotal time in the production cycle of the dairy cow. It is estimated that between 30% and 50% of all cows experience metabolic or infectious disease during this time. One of the most common and economically consequential effects of disease during the transition period is a reduction in early lactation milk production. This has led to the utilisation of deviation from expected milk yield in early lactation as a proxy measure for transition health. However, to date, this analysis has been used exclusively for the retrospective assessment of transition cow health. Sta

A randomized controlled clinical trial of a Wim Hof Method intervention in women with high depressive symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Stress is a driver of depression, and people with depression often struggle to cope with stress and anxiety. This study directly compares the mental health effects of a Wim Hof Method intervention to an active control condition (slow breathing) in women with high stress and high depressive symptoms. METHODS: We randomized 84 healthy midlife women with high stress and high depressive symptoms to either: 1) the hormetic stress condition based on the Wim Hof Method (WHM) involving a breathing technique designed to induce intermittent hypoxia and cold showers (n = 41) or 2) an active c

Impact of a Dietary Citrus Extract on the Behavior and Production of Lactating Dairy Cows Following Regrouping: A Preliminary Study.

Exposure of lab animals, humans, and pigs to olfactory sensory feed additives may reduce response to stress and anxiety. The objective of this preliminary study was to determine if feeding a citrus-based olfactory sensory functional feed extract (derived from Citrus sinensis) reduces the negative impact of regrouping of lactating dairy cows. Thirty-two (parity = 2.0 ± 1.2; mean ± SD), mid-lactation Holstein dairy cows (169.8 ± 16.8 DIM) were enrolled as focal cows in this study and housed individually in a tie-stall facility where they were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatment diets: (1) cont

Examining emotion regulation in binge-eating disorder.

BACKGROUND: Inefficient mechanisms of emotional regulation appear essential in understanding the development and maintenance of binge-eating disorder (BED). Previous research focused mainly on a very limited emotion regulation strategies in BED, such as rumination, suppression, and positive reappraisal. Therefore, the aim of the study was to assess a wider range of emotional regulation strategies (i.e. acceptance, refocusing on planning, positive refocusing, positive reappraisal, putting into perspective, self-blame, other-blame, rumination, and catastrophizing), as well as associations betwee
