While listening to recorded sentences with a sound-field level of 65 dB SPL, 24 adults with hearing-aid experience used the "Goldilocks" explore-and-select procedure to adjust level and spectrum of amplified speech to preference. All participants started adjustment from the same generic response. Amplification was provided by a custom-built Master Hearing Aid with online processing of microphone input. Primary goals were to assess the effects of including a formal speech-perception test between repeated self-adjustments and of adding multitalker babble (signal-to-noise ratio +6 dB) during self

Studies have indicated that the media plays a role in the development of body dissatisfaction in children. Nevertheless, there is limited understanding of the protective factors that may reduce this association, such as the parent-child relationship. Therefore, this study investigates children's body dissatisfaction and self-esteem and the role of media pressure and a trust in parent-child relationships herein. A sample of n = 246 participants (59.8% girls, aged 8-10) was recruited. Children completed self-report questionnaires that assessed body dissatisfaction, self-esteem, media pressure, a

BACKGROUND: Family-based treatment (FBT) is an outpatient therapy, though FBT principles have been incorporated in higher levels of care (e.g., partial hospitalization programs, PHPs). It is unknown how participation in a family-based PHP impacts weight restoration and parental self-efficacy.
METHODS: Weight gain and parental self-efficacy were examined in 98 participants with anorexia nervosa or atypical anorexia nervosa during the first five weeks of participation in a family-based PHP. Maternal self-efficacy was assessed using the Parent versus Anorexia Scale.
RESULTS: Significant increas

Effectiveness of individual- and group-based neuropsychological intervention on aspects of psychological well-being of dyslexic adults was evaluated. Dyslexic young adults (n = 120) were randomly assigned into individual intervention, group intervention or wait-list control group. Both interventions focussed on cognitive strategy learning, supporting self-esteem, and using psychoeducation. In group format peer support was also utilized. Cognitive and behavioural strategies, mood states, quality of life and self-esteem were assessed via self-report questionnaires at baseline, after the interven

Research has indicated a high correlation between psychostimulant use and tobacco cigarette smoking in human substance abusers. The objective of the current study was to examine the effects of acute and repeated nicotine administration on responding for intravenous methamphetamine (0.03 mg/kg/infusion) in a rodent model of self-administration, as well as the potential of nicotine to induce reinstatement of previously extinguished drug-taking behavior in male Sprague-Dawley rats. In addition, it was assessed whether nicotine-induced reinstatement of methamphetamine-seeking behavior and nicotine

Self-monitoring of blood pressure actively involves patients in hypertension management. However, the usefulness of self-monitoring of blood pressure may be limited by inaccurate patient reporting. The study objective was to assess reliability of patient blood pressure reporting over 6 months. Forty-nine subjects with Joint National Committee stage 1 or 2 hypertension were enrolled. Unaware that the monitors electronically store readings, the subjects were asked to check and record outpatient blood pressures twice weekly. Stored and written readings were compared. On average, patient-recorded

BACKGROUND: Chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP) imposes a significant psychological, physical, and emotional burden on millions of adults in the United States. A challenge in treating CMP is its tendency to become enmeshed with a person's sense of self. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) offer a promising approach to help patients disentangle pain from their sense of self. However, rigorous research is needed to determine which styles of mindfulness practice most effectively promote self-transcendence, a candidate mechanism for durable pain relief.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate wh

INTRODUCTION: Experiencing traumatic events (TEs), especially interpersonal TEs, is related to an increased risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Both TEs and PTSD are associated with a higher risk of substance use and problems in emotion regulation. Little is known about the associations between specific types of TEs, problems with general self-regulation (including cognitive and behavioral components) and substance use severity in adolescents. Knowledge on these associations could provide important approaches for prevention and therapy for adolescents with a history of tr

BACKGROUND: Rapid access to emergency medical services (EMS) is essential to improve outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). However, the outcomes of patients with AMI who are not transported by EMS remain unclear.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients who self-transported to hospital were classified into 2 groups according to Killip classification at the time of admission: those with heart failure (HF; Killip III or IV) and those without HF (Killip I or II). We assessed temporal trends in self-transport and compared patient characteristics and in-hospital mortality between the 2

In close relationships, the boundary between self and partner can blur-a phenomenon known as self-other overlap. This overlap may be especially pronounced during social-emotional contexts, where partners share one another's joys and distress. Yet little is known about how the brain represents this overlap during social-emotional experiences. More specifically, it is unclear whether it differs by emotional valence, whether it relates to relational and personal well-being, and whether these associations vary across social-emotional contexts. To address these questions, we scanned 90 romantic cou

BACKGROUND: This paper describes the development of the Self-Care Autonomy in Health Scale for Late Adolescents (SAHSLA) for use with general samples. It addresses concerns regarding the nonclinical efficacy of self-care health scales for adolescents, particularly their ability to discriminate between lower levels of self-care.
METHODS: A survey was constructed based on literature review and subsequently evaluated in two studies. Parents (N = 57, 53 parents of girls, 4 of boys, Mage = 15.96) participated in Study 1, which investigated the internal with Cronbach's alpha and coefficient omega (
