A Rare Case of Synovial Chondromatosis in the Proximal Interphalangeal Joint of the Right Index Finger.

Synovial chondromatosis is a rare condition that is also known as Reichel syndrome. It is a disorder that affects the monoarticular joints. … causes the afflicted joint to malfunction severely. Large joints such as the knee, hip, elbow, and shoulder joints are frequently the sites of nodular proliferation. Smaller joints such as the hand's interphalangeal and metacarpal joints and thumb are among the more unusual locations. Although the disease usually resolves on its own, conservative management opt …

Non-Operative Shoulder Dysfunction in the United States Military.

INTRODUCTION: Recent epidemiological evidence shows that shoulder and upper-arm complaints impose a substantial burden on the armed forces of the United States and create significant challenges for all components of the physical fitness domain of total force fitness. Clinicians, epidemiologists, and health-services researchers interested in shoulder and upper-arm injuries and their functional limitations rarely have objective, validated criteria for rigorously evaluating diagnostic practices, prescribed treatments, or the outcomes of alternative approaches. We sought to establish and quantify

Large-volume hydrodiatlation under suprascapular nerve block for the treatment of shoulder adhesive capsulitis.

BACKGROUND: Adhesive capsulitis (AC) and postoperative stiffness are characterized by fibrosis and contracture of the glenohumeral joint capsule, leading to progressive stiffness, pain, and limited range of motion (ROM). Diagnosis is confirmed clinically, with patients demonstrating reduced active and passive motion across multiple planes. While injections and physical therapy are commonly used treatments, no consensus exists regarding the most effective approach. This study aimed to assess patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and ROM for patients undergoing a large-volume hydrodilatation

Injury of the brachial artery accompanying simple closed elbow dislocation: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Elbow dislocation is the second common dislocation in adults, after the shoulder. The anatomical proximity to the joint of the brachial artery could lead to concomitant vascular injuries, even if their occurrence remains very rare. METHOD: It is reported the case of a right-hand-dominant  42-year-old man who sustained a simple closed  posterior elbow dislocation of  his left elbow, associated to a complete brachial artery rupture. He urgently underwent the reduction of the joint dislocation and an artery-repairing surgical procedure using a graft from ipsilateral saphenous vein.

Prosthetic Joint Infections in Patients Undergoing Carpal Tunnel Release.

INTRODUCTION: Little information is available regarding the rate of prosthetic joint infections (PJIs) in patients undergoing carpal tunnel release (CTR) without antibiotic prophylaxis. Hand surgeons should be aware of patients' history of arthroplasty. METHODS: All patients who underwent CTR at our institution between 2012 and 2014 were identified and their charts were reviewed to identify those who had a history of total hip, knee, and/or shoulder arthroplasty. Further chart review consisted of identifying a history of PJI, use of perioperative antibiotics, and surgeon awareness of prior ar

Comparative study of different intraoperative 3-D image intensifiers in orthopedic trauma care.

INTRODUCTION: Recently, isocentric C-arm fluoroscopy (Iso-C 3D) has been introduced as a precise imaging modality for intraoperative evaluat … than Vario 3D images. However, the Vario 3D was able to provide superior quality with scans of the shoulder joint and the adipose tissue. There was no significant difference in the visualization of intra-articular incongruities, quality of reduction, and implant positioning. CONCLUSION: Although the Iso-C 3D imaging system was superior in delineating the joint …

The Kouvalchouk procedure vs. distal tibial allograft for treatment of posterior shoulder instability: the deltoid "hammock" effect exists.

BACKGROUND: In 1993, Kouvalchouk described an acromial bone block with a pedicled deltoid flap for the treatment of posterior shoulder insta … lchouk (P < .001), and 0N Kouvalchouk (P < .001). The 15 N Kouvalchouk procedure restored posterior shoulder joint stability to near normal levels, such that it was not significantly different from the intact state (P = .203). CONCLUSIONS: The Kouvalchouk procedure with load applied to the deltoid was found to be biomechanically superior to the DTA for the mana …

Development and training of a machine learning algorithm to identify patients at risk for recurrence following an arthroscopic Bankart repair (CLEARER): protocol for a retrospective, multicentre, cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Shoulder instability is a common injury, with a reported incidence of 23.9 per 100 000 person-years. There is still an ongoing debate on the most effective treatment strategy. Non-operative treatment has recurrence rates of up to 60%, whereas operative treatments such as the Bankart repair and bone block procedures show lower recurrence rates (16% and 2%, respectively) but higher complication rates (<2% and up to 30%, respectively). Methods to determine risk of recurrence have been developed; however, patient-specific decision-making tools are still lacking. Artificial intelligen

A gender-based comparison of coracoid and glenoid anatomy: CT analysis and discussion of potential impact on the Latarjet procedure.

BACKGROUND: The success of the modified Latarjet procedure depends on proper sizing of the coracoid graft. There is no information available regarding the morphometric relationship between the glenoid cavity and the coracoid process for the South African population. This study aims at measuring the relationship between the glenoid and coracoid morphometries and investigates their gender-related differences. METHODS: Glenohumeral computerized tomography scans of 100 consecutive patients were considered for this study. Morphometric measurements were performed after aligning the coracoid and gle

Arthroscopic Latarjet: Indications, Techniques, and Results.

The Latarjet procedure to treat instability was first described by the eponymous surgeon in 1954. Long-term results from this procedure have been favorable. In 2007, Lafosse et al. first described an all-arthroscopic technique for the Latarjet procedure. In the United States, the Latarjet procedure is most predictably indicated by surgeons in cases of significant glenoid bone loss, revision instability, and patients engaging in high-risk sport. In some European centers, the Latarjet has broader indications and is often also used as a first-line surgical intervention when conservative treatment
