[Three children with recurrent meningitis as the result of an anatomical defect].

Three children, a 12-year-old girl, a 5-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl, were referred with recurrent episodes of meningitis. After an immunological defect had been ruled out early in the diagnostic work-up, the cause appeared to be an anatomical defect. After surgical treatment, no further meningitis occurred. Recurrent meningitis in children is rare. Anatomical defects, congenital or acquired, in the otorhinolaryngological area are the main cause. Conscientious history taking, careful physical examination and imaging using high-definition cranial computed tomography are important in estab

Mature teratoma arising from the middle cranial fossa.

A 25-year-old man presented with a sudden spurt in size of a bony swelling around the external ear, which was present since birth. This was associated with a painful swelling of the right half of the face and pain, redness, and decreased vision in the right eye. Neurologic examination showed decreased visual acuity in the right eye and paresis of the fifth, seventh, and eighth cranial nerves. Neuroimaging showed an extra-axial, partly cystic tumor of mixed density, located entirely within the middle cranial fossa scalloping the temporal bone and extending into the right infratemporal fossa and

Statistical evaluation of possible factors affecting the sagittal position of the first permanent molar in the maxilla.

A cephalometric analysis was designed to evaluate several factors that may affect the sagittal position of the maxillary first permanent molar. A total of 184 Class II and Class I malocclusion patients were randomly selected before orthodontic treatment. The mandibular and palatal planes were related to Frankfort Horizontal and used to create the interjaw or B angle. Age and cephalometric landmarks (Ba, N, point A, pterygomaxillary fissure, and maxillary molars) were projected at right angles to the Frankfort Horizontal for effective length. Actual maxillary length and actual molar location we

Relation of the ethmoidal cells to the floor of the anterior cranial fossa.

The shape of the anterior part of the anterior cranial fossa undergoes important changes in the postnatal life depending on the degree of pneumatisation of the ethmoid labyrinth and/or the frontal sinus. There exist three possibilities in these relations: 1) From the newborn period up to 9 years of age, in the majority of the cases the cribrous plate is situated at the level of the roof of the ethmoid labyrinth with the width of the ethmoid incisure corresponding to the width of the cribrous plate. 2) In the period from 9-35 years of age, in the majority of cases, the ethmoidal cells are partl

Abnormalities of the cranial base in synostotic frontal plagiocephaly.

Skeletal abnormalities of the cranial base in various craniosynostoses are well known. Cranial base angulation has been documented in synostotic frontal plagiocephaly--"unilateral coronal synostoses." We analyzed four infants with synostotic frontal plagiocephaly, focusing on computed tomographic images through the cranial base. The scans were performed on a GE advantage spiral with 1.5-mm images. The anatomical structures examined were length of the foramina ovale, length of the eustachian tubes, and sphenotemporal angles. Ratios for these measures were calculated comparing the normal and syn

Parotid metastasis--an independent prognostic factor for head and neck cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Metastatic parotid cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common parotid gland malignancy in New Zealand and Australia. The current AJCC TNM staging system does not account for the extent of nodal metastasis. A staging system that separates parotid (P stage) from neck disease (N stage) has been proposed recently. AIM: To review the outcome of patients with metastatic head and neck cutaneous SCC treated at our multidisciplinary Head and Neck Service using the proposed staging system. METHOD: Consecutive patients were culled from our Head and Neck/Skull Base Database, …

Using Sensitivity Analysis to Develop a Validated Computational Model of Post-operative Calvarial Growth in Sagittal Craniosynostosis.

Craniosynostosis is the premature fusion of one or more sutures across the calvaria, resulting in morphological and health complications that require invasive corrective surgery. Finite element (FE) method is a powerful tool that can aid with preoperative planning and post-operative predictions of craniosynostosis outcomes. However, input factors can influence the prediction of skull growth and the pressure on the growing brain using this approach. Therefore, the aim of this study was to carry out a series of sensitivity studies to understand the effect of various input parameters on predictin

Landmark-Independent Method to Determine Midsagittal Plane and Its Clinical Application in Craniomaxillofacial Trauma.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore new landmark-independent methods suitable for determining the midsagittal plane (MSP) in patients with craniomaxillofacial trauma and its clinical application. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Preoperative spiral computed tomography data of 25 patients with craniomaxillofacial trauma were imported into Mimics software (Materialise, Leuven, Belgium) to reconstruct 3-dimensional skull models. In the experimental group, the MSP was determined by different landmarks that were clear, were scattered, and did not have displacement according to the types of fra

Plagiocephaly: differential diagnosis based on endocranial morphology.

Plagiocephaly is a descriptive term that connotes an asymmetrically oblique or twisted head. Such cranial dysmorphology has a number of etiologies, the most common of which are unicoronal synostosis, unilambdoid synostosis, and plagiocephaly without synostosis. Use of the term plagiocephaly in the literature is often ambiguous in that at times it is used inclusively for all etiologies while at other times it is used exclusively as a synonym for unicoronal synostosis. Although differentiation by physical examination among unicoronal synostosis, unilambdoid synostosis, and plagiocephaly without

Hybridization and its impact on the ontogenetic allometry of skulls in macaques.

The role of hybridization in morphological diversification is a fundamental topic in evolutionary biology. However, despite the accumulated knowledge on adult hybrid variation, how hybridization affects ontogenetic allometry is less well understood. Here, we investigated the effects of hybridization on postnatal ontogenetic allometry in the skulls of a putative hybrid population of introduced Taiwanese macaques (Macaca cyclopis) and native Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata). Genomic analyses indicated that the population consisted of individuals with varying degrees of admixture, formed by mal

Use of Paine's Technique: Projecting Puncture Point to the Skull and Skin.

OBJECTIVE: Ventriculostomy from Paine's point is an effective technique to ensure that the brain is relaxed for aneurysm surgery. This study aimed to use Paine's point for other neurosurgical procedures (except for those that require a pterional approach) by delineation of surface landmarks for identification of Paine's point on the cranium and scalp. METHODS: Based on the anatomical knowledge and examination of 3-dimensional computed tomography images of skull, we determined novel surface landmarks to identify Paine's point on the cranium and scalp. The new method was used in patients with i

Dominant Temporo-Basal Glioblastoma with Rapid Progressive Aphasia: Venous-Anchored Maximal Safe Resection and Quantified Language Recovery.

Background and Clinical Significance: Modern neuro-oncologists encounter a major challenge when dealing with glioblastomas located in the dominant hemisphere's temporo-basal area, because their invasive nature disrupts the proximity to eloquent cortical areas (language and speech), as well as skull base venous structures, which can lead to a quick decline in function from the disruptions in these networks and the disconnection of corridor-level pathways. This manuscript illustrates the application of metric-based phenotyping, anatomically defined imaging, and venous-anchored microsurgical tech…

MR Cranial Bone Imaging: Evaluation of Both Motion-Corrected and Automated Deep Learning Pseudo-CT Estimated MR Images.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: CT imaging exposes patients to ionizing radiation. MR imaging is radiation free but previously has not been able to produce diagnostic-quality images of bone on a timeline suitable for clinical use. We developed automated motion correction and use deep learning to generate pseudo-CT images from MR images. We aim to evaluate whether motion-corrected pseudo-CT produces cranial images that have potential to be acceptable for clinical use. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients younger than age 18 who underwent CT imaging of the head for either trauma or evaluation of cranial sut

A Deep Learning-Based Automatic Segmentation and 3D Visualization Technique for Intracranial Hemorrhage Detection Using Computed Tomography Images.

Intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) occurs when blood leaks inside the skull as a result of trauma to the skull or due to medical conditions. ICH usually requires immediate medical and surgical attention because the disease has a high mortality rate, long-term disability potential, and other potentially life-threatening complications. There are a wide range of severity levels, sizes, and morphologies of ICHs, making accurate identification challenging. Hemorrhages that are small are more likely to be missed, particularly in healthcare systems that experience high turnover when it comes to computed t

Osteological Observations on the Alytid Anura Latonia nigriventer with Comments on Functional Morphology, Biogeography, and Evolutionary History.

The Hula Painted Frog (Latonia nigriventer) is a rare frog species endemic to the Hula Valley, Israel. The species is the sole relict of a clade that was widespread mainly in Europe from the Oligocene until the beginning of the Pleistocene. The osteological characteristics of L. nigriventer are described based on X-ray microtomography scans of extant specimens and Pleistocene bones from the Hula Valley, to elucidate the evolutionary history of Alytidae and more specifically of Latonia. Based on the osteological description of L. nigriventer, we now better understand the differences, between La
