Effect of Gabapentin Enacarbil on Individual Items of the International Restless Legs Study Group Rating Scale and Post-sleep Questionnaire in Adults with Moderate-to-Severe Primary Restless Legs Syndrome: Pooled Analysis of 3 Randomized Trials.

PURPOSE: Few studies have investigated restless legs syndrome (RLS) treatment effects on individual International RLS Study Group Rating Scale (IRLS) items. We assessed the effects of gabapentin enacarbil (GEn) on individual IRLS items and their correlation with sleep disturbances in adults with moderate-to-severe primary RLS. METHODS: Data were pooled from the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 12-week studies of XP052, XP053, and XP081 for adults who received GEn (600 or 1200 mg) or placebo once daily. Adults had primary RLS, IRLS total score ≥15, and RLS symptoms >15 days during

Association of obesity and sleep problems among breast cancer survivors: results from a registry-based survey study.

PURPOSE: Sleep-related complaints are common among breast cancer survivors. However, the risk factors underlying sleep disturbances in this population are not completely understood. Some studies have shown that maintaining normal weight can result in a reduced risk of cancer-related symptoms, including sleep problems; however, data from published studies are not consistent. This study examined the associations between body mass index (BMI) and sleep-related complaints in breast cancer survivors. METHODS: Self-reported survey data from 861 breast cancer survivors at a single institution were a

The effect of diphenhydramine on sleep in pediatric burn patients: a secondary analysis.

Adequate sleep is essential for maintaining homeostasis, especially when recovering from an illness; however, studies have shown that sleep disruption and sleep deprivation are common in intensive care unit patients, including children who have sustained burn injury. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of diphenhydramine (DPH) on sleep in pediatric intensive care unit burn patients using Myra Levine's Conservation Model as the organizing framework. For this study, secondary analysis of polysomnography data and retrospective chart review were used. Twelve DPH patients were pair

Dim light at night does not disrupt timing or quality of sleep in mice.

Artificial nighttime illumination has recently become commonplace throughout the world; however, in common with other animals, humans have not evolved in the ecological context of chronic light at night. With prevailing evidence linking the circadian, endocrine, immune, and metabolic systems, understanding these relationships is important to understanding the etiology and progression of several diseases. To eliminate the covariate of sleep disruption in light at night studies, researchers often use nocturnal animals. However, the assumption that light at night does not affect sleep in nocturna

Exploring the relationship between work-related rumination, sleep quality, and work-related fatigue.

This study examined the association among three conceptualizations of work-related rumination (affective rumination, problem-solving pondering, and detachment) with sleep quality and work-related fatigue. It was hypothesized that affective rumination and poor sleep quality would be associated with increased fatigue and that problem-solving pondering and detachment would be associated with decreased fatigue. The mediating effect of sleep quality on the relationship between work-related rumination and fatigue was also tested. An online questionnaire was completed by a heterogeneous sample of 719

Sodium oxybate therapy provides multidimensional improvement in fibromyalgia: results of an international phase 3 trial.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia is characterised by chronic musculoskeletal pain and multiple symptoms including fatigue, multidimensional function impairment, sleep disturbance and tenderness. Along with pain and fatigue, non-restorative sleep is a core symptom of fibromyalgia. Sodium oxybate (SXB) is thought to reduce non-restorative sleep abnormalities. This study evaluated effects of SXB on fibromyalgia-related pain and other symptoms. METHODS: 573 patients with fibromyalgia according to 1990 American College of Rheumatology criteria were enrolled at 108 centres in eight countries. Subjects were

[Epilepsies with electric status epilepticus in sleep: peculiarities of clinical course and rational approaches to treatment].

We studied 52 patients with electric status epilepticus in slow sleep (EESSS) during 3-5 years. Age-dependent peculiarities of clinical course of the disease, risk factors for EESSS and rational approaches to antiepileptic treatment for these cases were singled out. Symptomatic and idiopathic EESSS variants were revealed. Combinations of valproates, levetiracetam and ethosuximidum were the most effective antiepileptic drugs in the treatment of EESSS.

Treatment of the narcoleptiform sleep disorder in chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia with sodium oxybate.

This study investigates the response of the underlying sleep disorder associated with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and fibromyalgia (FM) to treatment. We retrospectively reviewed 118 cases clinically consistent with CFS or FM, treated in a neurology practice. Abnormal findings on sleep studies and associated human leukocyte antigen markers, and a clinical pattern suggestive of narcolepsy, are present in a high proportion of patients. When considered appropriate based on the clinical picture and test results, treatment with sodium oxybate was offered to these patients. Sixty percent of patien

Pathological description of a non-motor variant of multiple system atrophy.

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a neurodegenerative disorder that usually presents clinically as a combination of parkinsonism, cerebellar syndrome and autonomic failure. Patients with MSA can present other clinical features, such as inspiratory stridor and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behaviour disorder (RBD). We report a patient with pathologically confirmed MSA who presented with a longstanding history of stridor, RBD and autonomic disturbances but did not develop overt parkinsonism or cerebellar signs. This case illustrates that MSA may present clinically without its cardinal motor symp

Sleep disorders in end-stage renal disease: 'Markers of inadequate dialysis'?

Excessive daytime sleepiness and sleep disorders, including sleep apnea syndrome, restless legs syndrome, and periodic limb movement disorder, occur with increased frequency in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The detection and management of sleep disorders in ESRD patients is often challenging but may have significant clinical benefits. Some of the poor quality of life in ESRD may be attributed to the presence of concomitant sleep disorders, yet the classical symptoms of sleep disorders (poor concentration, daytime sleepiness, and insomnia) are often ascribed to the uremic syndro

The cumulative cost of additional wakefulness: dose-response effects on neurobehavioral functions and sleep physiology from chronic sleep restriction and total sleep deprivation.

OBJECTIVES: To inform the debate over whether human sleep can be chronically reduced without consequences, we conducted a dose-response chronic sleep restriction experiment in which waking neurobehavioral and sleep physiological functions were monitored and compared to those for total sleep deprivation. DESIGN: The chronic sleep restriction experiment involved randomization to one of three sleep doses (4 h, 6 h, or 8 h time in bed per night), which were maintained for 14 consecutive days. The total sleep deprivation experiment involved 3 nights without sleep (0 h time in bed). Each study also

Sleep quality in Lyme disease.

Complaints of chronic fatigue as well as sleep disturbances are prevalent in Lyme disease. We compared polysomnographic measures of sleep in patients with documented Lyme disease with those of a group of age-matched normal control subjects. Eleven patients meeting Centers for Disease Control criteria for late Lyme disease with serologic confirmation by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Western blot without a history of other medical or psychiatric illness and 10 age-matched control subjects were studied. Lyme disease patients and controls underwent 2 nights of polysomnography. Multiple sle

Activation of EEG recordings by graded sleep deprivation.

Part I. The EEG recordings of 434 patients were activated by graded sleep deprivation. In clinically manifest epilepsies with a predominantly negative EEG tracing at rest the incidence of epileptic manifestations increased after sleep deprivation from 18.03% to 59.01%, in clinically suspect epilepsies from 6.4% to 39.0%. In other paroxysmal affections such as febrile convulsions, syncopes and collapses, paroxysms of abdominal pain or headaches, affective paroxysms and nocturnal terrors, the tracing activation by sleep deprivation mostly facilitated differential diagnosis between those affectio

Sex differences in susceptibility to oxidative injury and sleepiness from intermittent hypoxia.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Adult male mice exposed to long-term intermittent hypoxia (LTIH), modeling sleep apnea oxygenation patterns, develop nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase-dependent residual hypersomnolence and oxidative injury in select brain regions, including wake-active regions. Premenopausal females are less susceptible to selective oxidative brain injuries. We sought to determine whether female mice exposed to LTIH would confer resistance to LTIH-induced wake impairments and oxidative injuries. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: Young adult male and female C57BI/6J mice were s

Sleep problems in the community elderly as predictors of death and nursing home placement.

In 1984-85, 1855 elderly residents of an urban community responded to a comprehensive baseline interview that included questions regarding an extensive set of sleep characteristics and problems. During the subsequent 3 1/2 years of follow-up, 16.7% of the respondents died and 3.5% were placed in nursing homes. The predictive significance of each sleep characteristic for mortality and for nursing home placement was determined separately for males and females, using Cox proportional hazards models. Selected demographic and psychosocial variables were also entered into the models. Age, problems w
