“Don't put me down but don't be too nice to me either”: fear of positive vs. negative evaluation and responses to positive vs. negative social-evaluative films.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The bivalent fear of evaluation (BFOE) model suggests that fears of negative evaluation (FNE) and positive evaluation (FPE) are distinct features in social anxiety disorder as well as in non-clinical variations of social anxiety. The constructs can be measured utilizing the Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale – Revised (BFNE-R) and the Fear of Positive Evaluation Scale (FPES), respectively. Whereas the distinction between FNE and FPE has been well examined in survey studies, concomitant evidence from laboratory tasks is scarce. METHODS: The present study tested

Effects of the Family Bereavement Program on academic outcomes, educational expectations and job aspirations 6 years later: the mediating role of parenting and youth mental health problems.

Experiencing the death of a parent during childhood is associated with a variety of difficulties, including lower academic achievement, that have implications for functioning in childhood and adulthood. This study examines effects of the Family Bereavement Program (FBP), a preventive intervention for parentally-bereaved youth and their caregivers, on grade point averages (GPA), educational expectations and job aspirations of youths 6 years after the intervention. A total of 244 bereaved youths ages 8-16 and their caregivers were randomized to either the FBP or a comparison group that received

Cognitive Function and Health Literacy Decline in a Cohort of Aging English Adults.

BACKGROUND: Low health literacy is common among aging patients and is a risk factor for morbidity and mortality. We aimed to describe health literacy decline during aging and to investigate the roles of cognitive function and decline in determining health literacy decline. METHODS: Data were from 5,256 non-cognitively impaired adults aged ≥ 52 years in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Health literacy was assessed using a four-item reading comprehension assessment of a fictitious medicine label, and cognitive function was assessed in a battery administered in-person at baseline (2004-

[Relationship of οccupational stress parameters with burn-out and perceived stress].

One of the major problems concerning mental healthcare professionals is burn-out as a set of symptoms associated with chronic stress that encompasses three dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. Research has indicated that asylums are stressful environments where nurses are vulnerable to burn-out and occupational stress. There is a tendency for research studies to investigate causes of stress and ways of coping, but few studies, particularly in recent years, have considered burn-out and occupational stress among care staff at Greek asylum. Etifoxine versus alprazolam for the treatment of adjustment disorder with anxiety: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Adjustment disorder with anxiety (ADWA) is a highly prevalent condition, particularly in primary care practice. There are relatively few systematic treatment trials in the area of ADWA, and there are few data on predictors of treatment response. Etifoxine is a promising agent insofar as it is not associated with dependence, but in primary care settings benzodiazepines continue to be frequently prescribed for psychiatric symptoms. A randomized controlled trial of etifoxine versus alprazolam for ADWA was undertaken, focusing on efficacy and safety measures, and including an investiga

Level of education and multiple sclerosis risk after adjustment for known risk factors: The EnvIMS study.

BACKGROUND: Several recent studies have found a higher risk of multiple sclerosis (MS) among people with a low level of education. This has been suggested to reflect an effect of smoking and lower vitamin D status in the social class associated with lower levels of education. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this paper is to investigate the association between level of education and MS risk adjusting for the known risk factors smoking, infectious mononucleosis, indicators of vitamin D levels and body size. METHODS: Within the case-control study on Environmental Factors In MS (EnvIMS), 953 MS pati

High social support buffers the effects of 5-HTTLPR genotypes within social anxiety disorder.

An interaction between genetic aspects and environmental stressors has been suggested with regard to the etiology of social anxiety disorder (SAD). However, potential protective interplays which might decrease the risk of SAD have not been considered so far. Thus, we analyzed the interaction between 5-HTTLPR and differing levels of social support regarding SAD. The sample was based on participants of the Study of Health in Pomerania, Germany. We used the triallelic genotype of 5-HTTLPR and longitudinal data of social support. Final analyses were conducted in 79 individuals with SAD and 1,708 w

[Orthorexia nervosa and it's background factors].

The place of orthorexia nervosa (ON)--described by Bratman in 1997--is not clearly defined in the diagnostic systems. However, the increasing number of clinical experiences and research data gives us more and more information about the epidemiology, and the social and individual characteristics of ON. The general population shows a 6.9% prevalence of ON; healthcare professionals are at high risk of ON with the prevalence rate of 35-57.6%. Education, the choice of profession, socioeconomic status and the internalization of the ideals of society are significant factors in the development of ON,

Eliminating tobacco disparities among native Hawaiian Pacific Islanders through policy change: the role of community-based organizations.

Although cigarette smoking in the general U.S. population has decreased considerably over the past several decades, prevalence rates among Native Hawaiian Pacific Islanders (NHPI) have remained elevated by comparison with other groups. The aggregation of NHPI smoking data with that of Asians has drawn attention away from the serious smoking problems that NHPIs experience, thus, limiting funding, programs, and policies to reduce tobacco-related health disparities in their communities. In California, community-based organizations (CBOs) have played a major role in supporting the state's comprehe

Psychosocial conditions in adults with Crouzon syndrome: a follow-up study of 31 Swedish patients.

Crouzon syndrome presents with craniosynostosis, maxillary hypoplasia, exophtalmus, and sometimes hampered neuropsychological development. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the quality of life for adult patients with Crouzon syndrome. Forty patients with Crouzon syndrome born before 1990 could be identified. A questionnaire addressing education, employment, social relations, and quality-of-life was used. A matched control group was created for comparison. Logistic regression, correcting for the influence of age and sex, was used to compare patients and controls. Thirty-one patients

Predictors for treatment outcome of binge eating with obesity: a naturalistic study.

This study examines predictors of short-term treatment outcome for obese individuals with binge eating disorder (BED). A battery of assessment questionnaires was given to 212 patients on admission of a CBT day-treatment program for BED. Treatment outcome assessed by changes in eating disorder symptomatology was measured in 182 completers. Linear regression analyses indicated that a combination of variables at baseline predicted 26% of the variance in treatment outcome. High social embedding and higher scores on openness (NEO-PI-R) were significantly related to more improvement after treatment.

Factors that mediate racial/ethnic disparities in US fetal death rates.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine the importance of socioeconomic factors, maternal comorbid conditions, antepartum and intrapartum complications of pregnancy, and fetal factors in mediating racial disparities in fetal deaths. METHODS. We undertook a mediation analysis on a retrospective cohort study of hospital-based deliveries with a gestational age between 23 and 44 weeks in California, Missouri, and Pennsylvania from 1993 to 2005 (n = 7,104,674). RESULTS: Among non-Hispanic Black women and Hispanic women, the fetal death rate was higher than among non-Hispanic White women (5.9 and 3.6 pe

Disordered gambling as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and the South Oaks Gambling Screen: evidence for a common etiologic structure.

In a previous article, we demonstrated in a large twin study that disordered gambling (DG), as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; DSM-IV), ran in families, that about half of the variation in liability for DG was due to familial factors, and that all of this was explained by shared genetic rather than shared environmental influences (Slutske, Zhu, Meier, & Martin, 2010). The purpose of the present study is to extend this work to include an alternative conceptualization of DG that is provided by the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) item set in order

A comparison of quality-of-life domains and clinical factors in ovarian cancer patients: a Gynecologic Oncology Group study.

CONTEXT: Women diagnosed with ovarian cancer are at risk for reduced quality of life (QOL). It is imperative to further define these declines to interpret treatment outcomes and design appropriate clinical interventions. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this study was to compare data obtained from ovarian cancer patients with normative data to assess the degree to which QOL differs from the norm. Secondary objectives were to examine demographic variables and determine if there was a correlation between physical/functional and social/emotional scores during chemotherapy. METHODS: Patients
