Evidence of humic acid-aluminium‑silicon complexes under controlled conditions.

The chemistry of silicon (Si), the second most abundant element in soil after oxygen, is not yet fully understood in the soil-water-plant continuum. Although Si is widely accepted as an element that has little or no interaction with natural organic matter, some data seems to show the opposite. To identify a potential interaction between natural organic matter and Si, batch experiments were achieved at various pH and Si concentrations, involving also Al3+ as a common ion in soil and using humic acid (HA) as a typical model for natural organic matter. Several complementary techniques were used t…

The Design of Experiment as a Tool to Model Plant Trace-Metal Bioindication Abilities.

Bioindicator plants are species that have the capacity to linearly uptake some elements (metal and metalloids) from the growing substrate, thus reflecting their concentration in the soil. Many factors can influence the uptake of these elements by plants, among which is the simultaneous presence of several metals, a common situation in contaminated or natural soils. A novel approach that can be used to validate the bioindication ability of a species growing on a polymetallic substrate is the design of experiment (DoE) approach. The aim of the present study was to apply the DoE in full factorial…

Bacterial community and chemical profiles of oil-polluted sites in selected cities of Uganda: potential for developing a bacterial-based product for remediation of oil-polluted sites.

BACKGROUND: Oil spills are ranked among the greatest global challenges to humanity. In Uganda, owing to the forthcoming full-scale production of multi-billion barrels of oil, the country's oil pollution burden is anticipated to escalate, necessitating remediation. Due to the unsuitability of several oil clean-up technologies, the search for cost-effective and environmentally friendly remediation technologies is paramount. We thus carried out this study to examine the occurrence of metabolically active indigenous bacterial species and chemical characteristics of soils with a long history of oil…

Screening of Siderophore-Producing Bacteria and Their Effects on Promoting the Growth of Plants.

Iron deficiency is a major global agricultural problem. Siderophores can help organisms to uptake iron in form of siderophore-Fe3+ complexes and then in the cell cytosol, iron is reducted and released in ferrous form. This research aimed to obtain some efficient siderophore-producing bacterial strains and evaluate their plant growth-promoting effects in the iron-deficit environment. Two strains, Brucella sp. E7 and Pseudomonas brassicae W7, were isolated from rhizosphere soil. Both strains could produce maximum siderophores under the optimal conditions. Plant promoting experiment showed that m…

Competition for electrons favours N2 O reduction in denitrifying Bradyrhizobium isolates.

Bradyrhizobia are common members of soil microbiomes and known as N2 -fixing symbionts of economically important legumes. Many are also denitrifiers, which can act as sinks or sources for N2 O. Inoculation with compatible rhizobia is often needed for optimal N2 -fixation, but the choice of inoculant may have consequences for N2 O emission. Here, we determined the phylogeny and denitrification capacity of Bradyrhizobium strains, most of them isolated from peanut-nodules. Analyses of genomes and denitrification end-points showed that all were denitrifiers, but only ~1/3 could reduce N2 O. The N2…

Enhanced electrokinetically-delivered persulfate and alternating electric field induced thermal effect activated persulfate in situ for remediation of phenanthrene contaminated clay.

Delivering persulfate (PS) efficiently into clay is an unsolved challenge. This study proposes a novel strategy with enhanced electrokinetically -delivery PS into clay by using PS for continuously flushing cathode to inhibit water electrolysis at cathode electrode. On this basis, a novel approach of heating soil by alternating current (AC) was used to thermally activate PS in situ. Results show that the mass transfer efficiency of PS by electroosmotic flow is about 20 times that by electromigration. Moreover, when PS was added in the anode chamber, using PS solution continuously flushing catho…

Nanoactivated Carbon Reduces Mercury Mobility and Uptake by Oryza sativa L: Mechanistic Investigation Using Spectroscopic and Microscopic Techniques.

Mercury (Hg) contamination of paddy field poses a health risk to rice consumers, and its remediation is a subject of global scientific attention. In recent years focus has been given to in situ techniques which reduce the risk of Hg entering the food chain. Here, we investigate the use of nanoactivated carbon (NAC) as a soil amendment to minimize Hg uptake by rice plants. Application of 1-3% NAC to soil (by weight) reduced Hg concentration in the pore water (by 61-76%) and its bioaccumulation in the tissues of rice plants (by 15-63%), relative to the corresponding control. Specifically, NAC re…

Increased Methylmercury Accumulation in Rice after Straw Amendment.

Consumption of rice has been shown to be an important route of dietary exposure to methylmercury (MeHg, a neurotoxin) for Asians having a low fish but high rice diet. Therefore, factors that increase MeHg production and bioaccumulation in soil-rice systems, could enhance the risk of MeHg exposure. On the basis of a national-scale survey in China (64 sites in 12 provinces) and rice cultivation experiments, we report that straw amendment, a globally prevalent farming practice, could increase MeHg concentrations in paddy soils (11-1043%) and rice grains (95%). By carrying out a series of batch in…

Nonideal transport of contaminants in heterogeneous porous media: 9 - impact of contact time on desorption and elution tailing.

A series of miscible-displacement experiments was conducted to examine the impact of sorption contact time on desorption and elution of trichloroethene from a well-characterized soil. A large number of contact times were examined, spanning 1h to 4 years (∼2 × 10(6)h). Effluent trichloroethene concentrations were monitored over a range of greater than six orders of magnitude, allowing characterization of potential asymptotic tailing. The results of the column experiments showed that trichloroethene exhibited extensive elution tailing for all experiments. Each increase in contact time resulted i…

An integrated multi-omic approach for discovery and dereplication of bioactive microbial natural products.

Soil bacteria are a major source of clinically useful antibiotics, yet the majority of soil-dwelling micro-organisms remain uncultivable by standard laboratory methods. To access this untapped microbial diversity, we employed microbial diffusion chambers to isolate bacteria from ten Australian soil samples. A total of 1,218 bacterial isolates were recovered, representing a diverse collection spanning 61 genera from 32 families, covering the major known phyla of soil bacteria. Antibiotic activity screening revealed that 16% of isolates inhibited the growth of at least 1 of Escherichia coli or S…

DEM Study and Field Experiments on Coupling Bionic Subsoilers.

Subsoiling is an effective tillage method for breaking up the plough pan and reducing soil bulk density. However, subsoilers often encounter challenges such as high draft resistance and excessive energy consumption during operation. In this study, the claw toes of the badger and the scales of the pangolin were selected as bionic prototypes, based on which coupling bionic subsoilers were designed. The discrete element method (DEM) was used to simulate and analyze the interactions between soil and both the standard subsoiler and coupling bionic subsoilers. Field experiments were conducted to val…

Responses of Phragmites communis and its rhizosphere bacteria to different exposure sequences of molybdenum disulfide and levofloxacin.

The effect of the molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)/levofloxacin (LVF) co-exposure was explored on Phragmites communis and rhizosphere soil bacterial communities. The sequence of MoS2/LVF exposure and the different MoS2 dosages (10 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg) contributed to different degrees of effect on the plant after 42 days of exposure. The treatment with priority addition of low dosage MoS2 significantly ameliorated P. communis growth, with root length growing up to 532.22 ± 46.29 cm compared to the sole LVF stress (200.04 ± 29.13 cm). Besides, MoS2 served as an alleviator and reduced the accumulation…

Effect of Cd/Cu on the toxicity and stereoselective environmental behavior of dinotefuran in earthworms Eisenia foetida.

Pesticides and heavy metals commonly coexist in soil. In this study, the influence of Cd and Cu on the toxicity of rac-dinotefuran and the enantioselective behavior of dinotefuran enantiomers in soil-earthworm microcosms were investigated. The acute toxic tests showed that S-dinotefuran has higher toxic than that of R-dinotefuran. The rac-dinotefuran and Cd has an antagonistic effect on earthworms, and the Cu and rac-dinotefuran has a synergistic effect. Earthworms maybe promoted the enantioselective behavior of dinotefuran in soil. Co-exposure to Cd or Cu inhibited the dissipation of dinotefu…

Bioavailability study of phosphorus in alum-phosphorus sludge using switchgrass.

The study investigated biomass yield and the uptake of P and aluminum by switchgrass grown in a low-P soil amended with alum-P sludge and a conventional fertilizer, monoammonium phosphate (MAP), at rates of 9.7, 19.4, 29.1 and 38.8 mg P kg-1 dry soil. Potted soil (amended and control) units were seeded with pre-germinated switchgrass and harvested three times at 50-day intervals. Over the three growth cycles, P from alum-P sludge gradually became available. Amendment rate showed no significant effect on switchgrass biomass yield. P availability was greater for alum-P sludge than MAP and this m…

Resource availability and the abundance of an N-based defense in Australian tropical rain forests.

Plant defense theories predict that relatively resource-rich environments (those with more fertile soil) will support a greater abundance of plants with nitrogen-based chemical defense, but this has yet to be adequately tested. We tested this prediction by measuring the diversity and contribution to total biomass of cyanogenic plants (those that release hydrogen cyanide from endogenous cyanide-containing compounds) in the Australian tropical rain forest. We examined 401 species in thirty 200-m2 plots, six at each of five sites, for cyanogenesis. In upland/highland rain forest, two pairs of sit…
