Abnormal and normal compulsions.

Previous research by Rachman and de Silva (1978, Behaviour Research and Therapy, 16, 233-248) and by Salkovskis and Harrison (1984, Behaviour Research and Therapy, 22, 549-552) has shown that abnormal and normal obsessions are similar in content. The present study examined whether the same is true for abnormal and normal rituals. A sample of normal subjects (N = 150) were asked about their idiosyncratic rituals. A majority of them (54.7%) indicated that they had such rituals. While these rituals were less frequent, less intense, and less often associated with negative affect than the compulsio

Synergistic interaction between leptin and cholecystokinin to reduce short-term food intake in lean mice.

Leptin is a circulating protein involved in the long-term regulation of food intake and body weight. Cholecystokinin (CCK) is released postprandially and elicits satiety signals. We investigated the interaction between leptin and CCK-8 in the short-term regulation of food intake induced by 24-hr fasting in lean mice. Leptin, injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) at low doses (4-120 microg/kg), which did not influence feeding behavior for the first 3 hr postinjection, decreased food intake dose dependently by 47-83% during the first hour when coinjected with a subthreshold dose of CCK. Such an inte

Anxiolytic actions of diazepam, but not of buspirone, are influenced by gender and the endocrine stage.

The effect of diazepam (1.0 mg/kg, i.p.) and buspirone (5.0 mg/kg, i.p.) on the burying behaviour latency (denoting actions on the animals' reactivity) and on the cumulative burying behaviour (directly reflecting the experimental anxiety levels), were analyzed in male-, intact females, at proestrus and metoestrus, and in neonatally-androgenized-rats. Androgenization was performed by injecting 60 micrograms/rat of testosterone propionate on day 5 after delivery. Two main groups of neonatally-androgenized rats were established: A group of animals showing permanent oestrus from the vaginal openin

Nitric oxide synthesis inhibition attenuates behavioral actions of neuropeptide FF.

Neuropeptide FF (NPFF) has certain antiopiate actions and may play a role in opiate tolerance and dependence. Third ventricle injection of 10 micrograms NPFF induces a quasimorphine abstinence syndrome in opiate-naive rats. Nitric oxide synthesis may also contribute to opiate tolerance and dependence. The present study tests the hypothesis that NPFF acts through stimulation of nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Third ventricular injection of 10 micrograms NPFF precipitated an average of 46 abstinence-like signs during a 20-min observation. Pretreatment (30 min earlier) with 7.5 or 15 mg/kg s.c. of t

Effects of paraquat on the substantia nigra of the wistar rats: neurochemical, histological, and behavioral studies.

Effects of paraquat on the substantia nigra of the male Wistar rats we re studied pharmacologically by a intracerebral injection of paraquat. The neurochemical, morphological, and behavioral changes observed after a unilateral intranigral injection of paraquat (1-5 microgram) were as follows: (1) neurochemically, paraquat caused dose-dependent depletion of dopamine in the ipsilateral striatum starting 2 weeks after treatment; this effect was long-lasting and irreversible. The ipsilateral striatal dopamine level in animals treated with 3 microgram paraquat was even decreased by 91.5%. (2) Morph

Transplantation of mesencephalic cell suspension in dopamine-denervated striatum of the rat.I. Effects on spontaneous activity of striatal neurons.

These studies have examined the extent to which intrastriatal grafts of embryonic mesencephalic neurons induce recovery of normal discharge patterns in striatal neurons of rats after a unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesion of the nigrostriatal dopamine (DA) pathway. Lesioned rats were tested for rotational behavior induced by amphetamine and apomorphine. Animals which responded positively to these tests received two suspensions of mesencephalic embryonic neurons into the dorsal striatum (ST) ipsilateral to the denervated side. Sham-grafted rats received the suspension medium only. The v

Synaptic reorganisation in the rat striatum after dopaminergic deafferentation: an ultrastructural study using glutamate decarboxylase immunocytochemistry.

The ultrastructure of GABAergic and non-GABAergic synapses in the adult rat neostriatum was examined 6-8 months after unilateral removal of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathway by 6-hydroxydopamine injection into the medial forebrain bundle. GABAergic profiles were identified by preembedding glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) immunocytochemistry performed on parasagittal vibratome sections. In three representative fields of the striatum, the nature and number of boutons and their postsynaptic partners were determined and the differences between the striata ipsi- and contralateral to the lesion an

Evidence that lithium induces a glutamatergic: nitric oxide-mediated response in rat brain.

Studies have indicated the involvement of a glutamatergic mechanism in lithium (Li+) action. Glutamatergic agonists, such as kainic acid, are known to promote the synthesis of nitric oxide (NO) and to increase cGMP, while Li+ has displayed a similar, yet unexplained, ability to increase cGMP. NO synthesis is regarded as the principal prodromal event leading to the activation of the guanyl cyclase-cGMP transduction mechanism. In the present study, the involvement of the NO:cGMP pathway in the action of Li+ was examined, while the possibility of a glutamatergic mechanism in this response was als

Neural transplants disrupt the blood-brain barrier and allow peripherally acting drugs to exert a centrally mediated behavioral effect.

The disruption of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) following neural transplantation has been demonstrated with horseradish peroxidase histochemistry. It appears that the BBB becomes at least temporarily permeable to large macromolecules. In this study, two drugs (N-methylscopolamine and domperidone) that do not normally cross the BBB were shown to exert a centrally mediated behavioral effect when systematically administered in transplanted rats. This demonstrates that N-methylscopolamine, domperidone, and perhaps other peripherally acting drugs can enter the brain via transplants and directly mod

Central action of drugs acting on the cholinergic muscarinic receptor. II. Influence of ecothiopate administered into the lateral cerebral ventricle on behavior in rats.

Ecothiopate (Etp), 10 mug injected into the lateral cerebral ventricle (ivtr), diminished spontaneous motility and open-field performance, lowered body temperature, inhibited amphetamine-induced hypermotility and stereotypy, prolonged hexobarbital anesthesia and did not induce catalepsy. These behavioral symptoms were accompanied by lowered level of NA and elevated levels of 5-HT and 5-HIAA in the brain. No change in levels of DA were noted. Smaller doses (0-1 and 1 mug) had virtually no influence on behavior of the animals. The dose of 1 mug caused a rise in levels of 5-HIAA in the brain, but

Public stigma of mental illness in Australia: shifts in attitudes across nationally representative surveys in 2011 and 2024.

AIMS: Reducing stigma and discrimination towards people with mental ill-health is a key priority in Australian mental health policy. Population-based surveys conducted in Australia between 2003 and 2011 showed some improvement in stigmatising attitudes, but also a deterioration in attitudes about dangerousness and unpredictability, particularly in relation to schizophrenia. This study aimed to investigate whether stigmatising attitudes have changed since the 2011 national survey. METHODS: Two large, nationally representative samples of Australian adults were surveyed in 2011 (n = 1967) and 20

Stigmatization and perceived health status in patients with hidradenitis suppurativa: an observational multicenter study in Europe.

INTRODUCTION: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) can severely affect the quality of life (QoL) and is linked to psychological distress, including anxiety, depression, and reduced self-esteem. Stigmatization due to physical appearance may significantly contribute to the psychological burden and impact on QoL for HS patients. This study investigates the association between stigmatization, depression, anxiety, and health- and disease-related variables among HS patients in Europe. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This observational cross-sectional multicenter study was conducted across 22 dermatological outpatie

Changes in the ability to correctly identify schizophrenia and depression: results from general population surveys in Germany over 30 years.

PURPOSE: This study aims to examine time trends in the ability to correctly identify schizophrenia and major depression within the German general population from 1990 to 2020, as an indicator of changing mental health literacy (MHL). Additionally, we investigated shifts in the use of stigmatizing language. METHODS: Our analysis is based on four waves of representative population surveys in Germany in 1990/1993 (West Germany: N = 2044, East Germany: N = 1563), 2001 (N = 5025), 2011 (N = 2455), and 2020 (N = 3042) using identical methodology. Respondents were presented with an unlabelled case v

The effects of race and class on community-level stigmatization of opioid use and policy preferences.

BACKGROUND: With opioid use and overdose rates continuing to plague minority communities in the U.S., we explored whether a geographic community's racial composition and social class affect how opioid use in the community is stigmatized and what policy preferences arise in response. METHODS: We use case vignettes in a randomized, between-subjects study (N = 1478) with a nation-wide survey. The vignettes describe a community where opioids are harmfully used, varying whether the community was (1) wealthy or poor, (2) predominantly Black or White and (3) facing prevalent use of painkillers or he
