A new type of swab (Cellswab; Cellomeda, Turku, Finland), utilizing a highly absorbent cellulose viscose sponge material, was compared to some traditional swabs. The survival of 14 aerobic and 10 anaerobic and microaerophilic bacterial species in the Cellswab, two commercial swab transport systems (Copan, Brescia, Italy, and Orion Diagnostica, Espoo, Finland), and one Dacron swab (Technical Service Consultants Ltd. [TSC], Heywood, United Kingdom) was evaluated. Bacteria were suspended in broth, into which the swabs were dipped. The Cellswab absorbed 1.3 times more fluid and released 3.5 times

Group B streptococci contain sialic acid in their capsular polysaccharides thus resembling human and vertebrate glycoconjugates which are especially increased in human tumors. Sterical and conformational reasons are responsible for the fact, that certain streptococcal antigens do not react with antibodies, including monoclonal antibodies, against these carbohydrate structures. The usefulness of lectins in detecting streptococcal antigens is demonstrated with antigalactans. In summary, the relationships between the biochemical structure of streptococcal antigens on one side and the serological

Group A Streptococcus is one of the leading causes of otorrhea. The performance of rapid antigen tests in 256 children with otorrhea showed excellent sensitivity, 97.3% (95% confidence interval: 90.7%-99.7%), and specificity, 100% (95% confidence interval: 98.0%-100%). In a period of increasing invasive and noninvasive group A Streptococcus infections, an early diagnosis could be useful.

A carefully timed coculture fermentation of Penicillium fuscum and P. camembertii/clavigerum yielded eight new 16-membered-ring macrolides, berkeleylactones A-H (1, 4, 6-9, 12, 13), as well as the known antibiotic macrolide A26771B (5), patulin, and citrinin. There was no evidence of the production of the berkeleylactones or A26771B (5) by either fungus when grown as axenic cultures. The structures were deduced from analyses of spectral data, and the absolute configurations of compounds 1 and 9 were determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Berkeleylactone A (1) exhibited the most po

We studied on the antibacterial activity of gentamicin against various pathogens isolated from clinical materials mainly isolated during 1974 and 1975, comparing with other antibiotics. Beta hemolytic streptococci, pneumococci and enterococci are less susceptible to gentamicin than staphylococci. Staph, aureus and Staph. epidermidis resistant to various antibiotics are very susceptible to gentamicin, and no resistant strain to this drug was found. Haemophilus influenzae, H. parainfluenzae and H. parahaemolyticus are very susceptible to gentamicin, and there is no resistant strain to this drug.

Fucose, a sugar abundant in the host environment, is exploited by many bacteria through fucose utilization gene cluster (FUC) to enhance growth and virulence. Streptococcus pasteurianus is an emerging zoonotic pathogen increasingly recognized as a cause of meningitis and bacteremia in both animals and humans worldwide, yet its pathogenic mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we characterized a putative FUC (E8M05_RS09690-E8M05_RS09645) in S. pasteurianus strain WUSP067, which was isolated from the brain of a piglet with meningitis. The predicted proteins encoded by this cluster s

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria pose a severe global health threat with high mortality rates, especially in hospital-acquired pneumonia. The stagnation of new antibiotic development underscores the urgent need for alternative therapeutics.
METHODS: This review summarizes recent advances in the application of bacteriophage endolysins against major MDR respiratory pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumoniae. We focus on their mechanisms of action, syn…

OBJECTIVE: While existing virulence-targeting strategies predominantly rely on single-component inhibitors that exert evolutionary pressure, this study pioneers an innovative approach using the multicomponent traditional Chinese medicine Radix Paeoniae Alba (RPA). Unlike conventional monotherapeutic agents, RPA uniquely inhibits pneumolysin (PLY) oligomerization without affecting bacterial growth, thereby circumventing resistance development-a critical limitation of current therapies. We aimed to elucidate the novel mechanism by which RPA attenuates Streptococcus pneumoniae pathogenicity by in…

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) with their potential health benefits are naturally prevalent in dairy and fermented food products. This probiotic microbiota can be an alternative biological tool for controlling other pathogenic bacteria. The study aimed to isolate lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from raw cow milk and evaluate their probiotic potential. Twelve gram-positive isolates showing tolerance to bile salt, acid, and low pH were identified by 16S rRNA sequencing, which revealed the isolates belong to the genera including Lactococcus, Enterococcus, Streptococcus, Bacillus, and Weissella. In case of
