[Melatonin in humans: a biochemical marker of the circadian clock and an endogenous synchronizer].

Melatonin (MLT) is a methoxyindole secreted principally by the pineal gland. It is synthesized at night under normal environmental conditions. The endogenous rhythm of secretion is generated by the suprachiasmatic nuclei and activated by the light/dark cycle. Light is able to both suppress or activate melatonin production on the light schedule. The nycthohemeral rhythm of this hormone can be determined by repeated measurements of plasma or saliva MLT or urine sulfatoxy-MLT, the main hepatic metabolite. Melatonin can be considered as the output (the hand) of the endogenous clock. Since the regu

The role of the pelvic nerves in the realization of the reservoir function of the colon.

In situ experiments were made on a group of dogs and in vivo experiments on another group of dogs with implanted electrodes for recording the electrical activity of the colonic muscle wall. A bipolar platinum electrode implanted in the pelvic nerve entering into the distal area of descending colon was used for electrical stimulation of the nerve (1 ms impulse duration, frequency of 2, 8, 10 and 15 Hz and amplitude of 10, 15 or 20 V). Electrical stimulation of the pelvic nerve with a frequency of 2 Hz resulted in inhibition of the spike activity. However, groups of spike potential burst in the

Analysis of the cardiovascular responses to central injection of tryptamine in rats.

Tryptamine (2-20 micrograms), administered into the lateral cerebral ventricle of the rat, evoked a pressor response which was sometimes followed by a prolonged depressor response. The intracisternal administration of tryptamine (7-20 micrograms) caused a slow progressive and long-lasting depressor effect without or with an initial pressor effect. The pressor response was accompanied by variable changes in heart rate, whilst the pure depressor response was accompanied by a decrease in heart rate. After transection of the spinal cord between C1 and C2 the pressor response was substantially redu

Metabolic and antihypertensive effects of moxonidine and moxonidine plus irbesartan in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and mild hypertension: a sequential, randomized, double-blind clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The autonomic nervous system plays an important part in the homeostasis of blood pressure (BP), and sympathetic overactivity may contribute to metabolic conditions such as glycemic intolerance or insulin resistance. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the anti-hypertensive and metabolic effects of moxonidine, a selective imidazoline II-receptor agonist that lowers BP by central inhibition of the sympathetic nervous system, and moxonidine plus the angiotensin II-receptor blocker irbesartan in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and mild hypertension. METHODS: This was a study in pa…

Dose-related effects of red wine and alcohol on hemodynamics, sympathetic nerve activity, and arterial diameter.

The cardiovascular benefits of light to moderate red wine consumption often have been attributed to its polyphenol constituents. However, the acute dose-related hemodynamic, vasodilator, and sympathetic neural effects of ethanol and red wine have not been characterized and compared in the same individual. We sought to test the hypotheses that responses to one and two alcoholic drinks differ and that red wine with high polyphenol content elicits a greater effect than ethanol alone. Thirteen volunteers (24-47 yr; 7 men, 6 women) drank wine, ethanol, and water in a randomized, single-blind trial

Vestibular inputs elicit patterned changes in limb blood flow in conscious cats.

Previous experiments have demonstrated that the vestibular system contributes to regulating sympathetic nervous system activity, particularly the discharges of vasoconstrictor fibres. In the present study, we examined the physiological significance of vestibulosympathetic responses by comparing blood flow and vascular resistance in the forelimb and hindlimb during head-up tilt from the prone position before and after the removal of vestibular inputs through a bilateral vestibular neurectomy. Experiments were performed on conscious cats that were trained to remain sedentary on a tilt table duri…

Modulation of innate immune response by the vagus nerve in experimental hepatic amebiasis in rats.

The parasympathetic nervous system has a crucial role in immunomodulation of the vagus nerve, its structure provides a pathogen detection system, and a negative feedback to the immune system after the pathogenic agent has been eliminated. Amebiasis is a disease caused by the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica, considered the third leading cause of death in the world. The rats are used as a natural resistance model to amoebic liver infection. The aim of this study is to analyze the interaction of Entamoeba histolytica with neutrophils, macrophages, and NK cells in livers of intact and vag…

Modified Clonidine Testing for Growth Hormone Stimulation Reveals α2-Adrenoreceptor Sub Sensitivity in Children with Idiopathic Growth Hormone Deficiency.

INTRODUCTION: The association between short stature and increased risk of ischemic heart disease has been subject to studies for decades. The recent discussion of cardiovascular risk during growth hormone therapy has given new importance to this question. We have hypothesized that the autonomic system is a crucial element relating to this subject. METHODS: Heart rate variability calculated from 24-hour electrocardiogram data is providing insight into the regulatory state of the autonomous nervous system and is an approved surrogate parameter for estimating cardiovascular risk. We have calcula

Though necessary during acute inflammation in the context of systemic infection or trauma, these long-standing changes contribute to increased mortality in chronic inflammatory diseases.

Protective effects of intranasal losartan in the APP/PS1 transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer disease.

The local renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in the brain is a multitasking system controlling a plethora of essential functions such as neurogenic hypertension, baroreflexes, and sympathetic activity. Aside from its vasoactive actions, brain angiotensin II (AT-II) has also been implicated in the pathogenesis of cognitive decline, and beneficial effects of angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) in Alzheimer (AD) and Parkinson diseases (PD) are suggested. However, the use of ARBs at antihypertensive dosages would lead to unwanted hypotensive reactions in AD patients. Here we treated the APP/PS1 trans

Heart rate variability and autonomic function in health professions students: Associations with academic stress and lifestyle factors.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a non-invasive measure of autonomic nervous system function and a sensitive marker of physiological stress. Health professions students are exposed to severe academic stress and multiple lifestyle-related factors that may influence autonomic regulation. This study aimed to evaluate HRV profiles in health professions students and examine associations with academic stress and lifestyle factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 237 students (81.4% females). HRV was assessed under standardized resting conditions using time-domain, frequency-domain, and Po

Longitudinal assessment of resting wakefulness heart rate variability and its association with sleep apnea severity.

This study investigates the relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) during wakefulness and sleep apnea severity, with a focus on long-term autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation. Using longitudinal data from the Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS), we analyzed 15-minute pre-sleep ECG segments from 112 carefully selected participants, applying strict exclusion criteria to minimize confounding from comorbidities and medications known to affect HRV. A comprehensive set of time-domain, frequency-domain, and nonlinear HRV features was extracted and compared across apnea severity groups
