OBJECTIVE: To determine whether polymorphisms in the estrogen receptor (ER) genes are associated with chronic periodontitis in a Chinese population overall the Shanxi territory.
METHODS: 109 patients with chronic periodontitis and 99 healthy controls were recmited in this study. Genomic DNA was extracted from oral mucosa swab sample of each subject by the Chelex-100 method. Determination of the ER-alpha and -beta polymorphisms was performed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP), respectively.

AIM: To review the epidemiology of HIV in NSW and compare HIV rates in NSW with those of other comparable jurisdictions.
METHOD: The rate of newly diagnosed cases of HIV reported in NSW was compared with those published from other Australian and comparable international jurisdictions.
RESULTS: Until recent years, NSW has consistently reported the highest rate of newly diagnosed HIV infections in Australia with a peak of 29.1 per 100,000 population in 1987. Since then the notification rate has decreased significantly and has been stable since 2000 at an average annual rate of 5.6 per 100,000.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic cervical artery dissection (TCAD) is a relative infrequent complication of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Since TCAD is associated with morbidity in a considerable percentage of patients, it is important to obtain clues for recognising TCAD in this category of patients.

Ciguatera Fish Poisoning (CFP), a significant public health problem in the Pacific, is intrinsically linked to the health of coral reef ecosystems. Incidence data on CFP could therefore be used, in theory, as indicators of disruption to coral reefs. Some disruptions, such as increasing sea surface temperatures, result from global environmental change--therefore suggesting that CFP is likely to become an increasing public health problem in the region. We present an extremely rare autopsy case with traumatic dissection of the extracranial vertebral artery due to blunt injury caused by a traffic accident. The patient complained of nausea and numbness of the hands at the scene of the accident. His consciousness deteriorated and he fell into a coma within 12h, then died 4 days after the collision. Beriberi is an uncommon disorder related to thiamine deficiency. Data on the surveillance of rabies in Poland from 1992 to 2006 is presented. Between 1992 and 2006, 22,575 rabies cases were diagnosed. There were 3,963 (17.5%) cases recorded in domestic animals, 18,555 (82.2%) in wildlife and 57 (0.3%) in bats. The peak of the epizootic in wildlife was recorded in 1992 with 3,084 cases. There were 2,547 cases recorded in wildlife with 2,079 (81.6%) found in the red fox. OBJECTIVE: To determine the ischemic lesions distribution and extension of patients with basilar artery thrombosis by the means of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
METHODS: In 17 patients with thrombosis of the basilar artery, MRI was performed, including T2-weighted, magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) sequences in the short-term phase (<48 hours). The shapes of ischemic lesions were obtained by graphic software and overlapped on a representative layer outline background.

OBJECTIVE: An accessory middle cerebral artery (MCA) usually originates between the A1 and proximal A2 segment of the anterior cerebral artery, reaches the sylvian fissure, and supplies the territory of the MCA. This anomaly has been associated with cerebral aneurysms and Moyamoya disease. We report an accessory MCA arising from the A2 segment.
