Group B Streptococcus (GBS, Streptococcus agalactiae) is a pathogen of increasing importance in adults. Severe and invasive cases in non-pregnant adults were collected during the period 2015-2019 by voluntary-based surveillance. In total, 108 GBS strains were phenotypically and genotypically characterized for the serotype, antimicrobial resistance, pili, surface protein genes, and the hyper-virulent adhesin hvgA. Patients were divided into two age groups: adults (18-64 years; n = 32) and older adults (≥65 years; n = 72). The average age was 70.8 years, with a male/female ratio of 1.7. Most iso

Poultry products remain as one of the most popular and extensively consumed foods in the world and the introduction of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) producing antibiotic resistant bacterial species into it is an emerging challenge. The current study has been designed to analyze the distribution of antibiotic resistance among the H2S producing bacteria isolated from the fecal samples of chickens from different poultry farms. Here, twenty bacterial isolates were selected based on their ability to produce H2S on XLD agar, and the16S rDNA sequencing was carried out for their molecular identification. The

BACKGROUND: Doxycycline and minocycline are brain-penetrant tetracycline antibiotics, which recently gained interest because of their immunomodulatory and neuroprotective properties. Observational studies have suggested that exposure to these drugs may decrease the risk to develop schizophrenia, but results are inconsistent. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential association between doxycycline use and later onset of schizophrenia.
DESIGN: We used data from 1 647 298 individuals born between 1980 and 2006 available through Danish population registers. 79 078 of those individua

The rapid emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance has become a global public health concern that threatens the effective treatment of infectious diseases. One major approach adopted to overcome antimicrobial resistance is the use of plant extracts individually and/or with combination of antibiotics with plant extracts, which may lead to new ways of treating infectious diseases and essentially representing a potential area for further future investigations. In this study, the antifungal activities of Azadirachta indica leaf and Catharanthus roseus flower extracts against fluconazole-re

The main entry path of veterinary antibiotics to the environment is the application of liquid manure on agricultural land. Along with the manure, they can infiltrate into soils and leach into groundwater. As the environmental behavior of veterinary antibiotics is strongly affected by the process of sorption, the comprehensive knowledge regarding their sorption behavior is key to a reliable risk assessment. However, the flow patterns in field experiments are influenced by several factors that can hardly be distinguished, while most of the sorption studies on veterinary antibiotics were designed

Animal carcass decay produces many poisonous metabolites and chemical pollutants, which pose potential ecological risks to the aquatic environment and human health. However, the effects of animal cadaver decomposition on high-risk antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and potential pathogens in different water types are still unknown. In this study, fifteen freshwater economic fish (Carassius auratus) corpses were put into three types of water (i.e., pond water, tap water, and domestic sewage) for a 100-day decomposition. Next generation sequencing and HT-qPCR were used to illustrate how corpse d

Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli are important bacterial causes of human foodborne illness. Despite several years of reduced antibiotics usage in livestock production in the United Kingdom (UK) and United States (US), a high prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) persists in Campylobacter. Both countries have instigated genome sequencing-based surveillance programs for Campylobacter, and in this study, we have identified AMR genes in 32,256 C. jejuni and 8,776 C. coli publicly available genome sequences to compare the prevalence and trends of AMR in Campylobacter isolated in t

A meta-analysis of 94 published studies was conducted to explore the impacts of farmland application of antibiotic-contaminated manures on antibiotic concentrations and ARG abundances in manure-amended soil. Forty-nine antibiotics were reported, in which chlortetracycline, oxytetracycline, doxycycline, tetracycline, enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin were the most prevalent and had relatively high concentrations. The responses of ARG and mobile genetic element (MGE) abundances to farmland application of antibiotic-contaminated manures varied considerably under different management str
