Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in patients with trauma and is associated with poor outcomes. Therefore, early prediction of AKI in patients with trauma is important for risk stratification and the provision of optimal intensive care unit treatment. This study aimed to compare 2 models, machine learning (ML) techniques and logistic regression, in predicting AKI in patients with trauma. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 400 patients who sustained torso injuries between January 2016 and June 2020. Patients were included if they were aged > 15 years, admitted to the intensive care uni

BACKGROUND: The use of bronchial blockers has been increased for one-lung ventilation; however, the placement of bronchial blockers is time consuming. The objective of this study was to compare the novel extraluminal technique of Uniblocker placement supported by trachea length measurement on computerized tomography images with conventional intraluminal Uniblocker placement method.
METHODS: Seventy adult patients undergoing left side thoracic surgery were included in the study. All the patients were randomly assigned to one of two groups: conventional intraluminal intubation group (CV-IN grou

BACKGROUND: Tension pneumothorax (tPTX) remains a significant cause of potentially preventable death in military and civilian settings. The current prehospital standard of care for tPTX is immediate decompression with a 14-gauge 8-cm angiocatheter; however, failure rates may be as high as 17% to 60%. Alternative devices, such as 10-gauge angiocatheter, modified Veress needle, and laparoscopic trocar, have shown to be potentially more effective in animal models; however, little is known about the relative insertional safety or mechanical stability during casualty movement.

UNLABELLED: Far-side impacts are not part of any regulated NCAP, FMVSS, or similar test regime despite accounting for 43 percent of the seriously injured persons and 30 percent of the harm in U.S. side impact crashes. Furthermore, injuries to the head and thorax account for over half of the serious injuries sustained by occupants in far-side crashes. Despite this, there is no regulated or well-accepted anthropomorphic test device (ATD) or computer model available to investigate far-side impacts. As such, this presents an opportunity to assess a computer model that can be used to measure the ef

INTRODUCTION: Patients with spinal injuries have been treated in the past by laminectomy in an attempt to decompress the spinal cord. The results have shown insignificant improvement or even a worsening of neurologic function and decreased stability without effectively removing the anterior bone and disc fragments compressing the spinal cord. The primary indication for anterior decompression and grafting is narrowing of the spinal canal with neurologic deficits that cannot be resolved by any other approach. One must think of subsequent surgical intervention for increased stability and compress

The aim of this study is to examine the predictive value of ultrasound diagnostics for the assessment of traumatic lesions of the posterior ligament complex (PLC) in burst fractures of the thoracolumbar spine. This was a prospective validating cohort study. Judgment about instability and treatment of burst fractures depends on the condition of the PLC. There have been some studies describing underdiagnosis of PLC injuries due to classification problems in ligamentary distraction type fractures. The gold standard for assessing these lesions is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Even then, there

STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review and pooled analysis.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the concordance between Thoracolumbar Injury Classification and Severity Score (TLICS) recommendations and actual treatment decisions in thoracolumbar trauma.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: TLICS is widely used to guide management of thoracolumbar fractures, recommending nonoperative treatment for scores ≤3 and operative intervention for scores ≥5. However, treatment variability may occur in cases with indeterminate scores, uncertainty in posterior ligamentous complex (PLC) integrity, or clinical modifiers not fully cap

BACKGROUND: Massive hemothorax after penetrating trauma is a rapidly lethal condition. Standard management calls for immediate chest tube drainage, that aims for lung expansion tamponading bleeding vessels. Paradoxically, draining a massive hemothorax that is resulting from heart, major vessels or deep lung parenchyma laceration may abolish tamponade and precipitate catastrophic hemorrhage before surgical control is achieved. In resource-limited settings or mass casualty incidents (MCIs), surgical delay compounds this risk.

Coronary artery calcification (CAC) on computed tomography (CT) is a well-established marker of atherosclerosis, but its role in risk stratification for radiation-induced cardiovascular toxicity (RICT) remains unclear. This scoping review evaluates the current evidence on CAC in patients undergoing thoracic cancer radiotherapy (RT) and identifies key knowledge gaps. A systematic search of six databases was conducted up to December 2025, addressing six CAC-related domains: baseline prevalence, assessment methods, prognostic value for clinical outcomes, progression following RT, guideline or con

We report a rare case of a hemodynamically unstable adolescent boy who developed aberrant supraventricular tachycardia following minor blunt chest trauma during soccer, successfully terminated with vagal maneuvers alone. Post-termination electrocardiography revealed previously unrecognized Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. This case demonstrates that seemingly minor blunt chest trauma during contact sports can precipitate clinically significant arrhythmias in children with occult conduction abnormalities. It further underscores the safety, effectiveness and the practical utility of vagal maneuve

BACKGROUND Traumatic bronchial obstruction resulting from blunt or penetrating chest trauma can lead to sudden respiratory failure; its diagnosis and management can be challenging. This report describes a case of traumatic complete occlusion of the left main bronchus and left lobar atelectasis, which was managed by temporary placement of a covered self-expandable metallic stent under fiberoptic bronchoscopic guidance. CASE REPORT A 37-year-old man presented with dyspnea after blunt chest trauma. Three days after admission, bronchoscopy confirmed complete occlusion of the left main bronchus; on

Powered two-wheeler (PTW) riders are most frequently injured seriously to the thorax. Some thorax protective devices have been developed in order to reduce thorax injuries. Nevertheless, actual tests and standard lack real-world accident representativeness. The aim of the study was to determine realistic trunk impact conditions for accidents likely to result in thorax injury. The study is divided into two phases: a literature review to classify accident scenarios based on rider kinematics, and numerical simulations to analyze the riders impact conditions. Three accident scenarios have been fou

BACKGROUND: The variation in the implementation of chest trauma (CT) management's guidelines led to inconsistent and mixed experiences toward CT management by the health care team. Moreover, there is a scarcity of studies exploring factors that enhance CT management experiences worldwide and in Jordan.
OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were (1) to explore emergency health professionals' attitudes and experiences toward CT management and (2) to understand factors that affect the care for patients with CTs among emergency health professionals.
METHODS: A qualitative exploratory approach was a
