This study evaluates the inter-device measurement properties of partial coherence interferometry (PCI) and spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in measuring axial length, particularly for myopia management. We recruited 82 eyes from 41 adult participants with a mean age of 31.0 ± 17.6 years and a mean spherical equivalent of -2.20 ± 2.28 D. Axial length was measured using SD-OCT and PCI for both the right and left eyes. Agreement between the two measurements was assessed using Bland-Altman analysis, and graphs and values were compared with linear mixed models. The results show

A 32-year-old woman with a history of biopsy-proven giant axonal neuropathy (GAN) and no past ocular history presented after failing a vision-screening test conducted by her primary doctor. Bilateral optic atrophy was observed on fundus examination with cup-to-disc ratio of 0.7. Kinetic visual fields showed moderate constriction in both eyes. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) exhibited diffuse thinning, a pattern atypical of glaucomatous or nutritional optic atrophy and most likely secondary to the optic atrophy associated with GAN. Serial OCT to monito

Coherent X-ray imaging methods such as ptychography and holography can provide 3D images of millimeter-thick specimens at nanoscale resolution when combined with multislice reconstruction methods, which account for wavefield propagation through the full sample depth rather than using a simple projection of optical effects along the illumination direction. Here, we derive the transverse and longitudinal coherence requirements for multislice imaging, based on the illumination wavelength λ, sample thickness t, and the target spatial resolution δr. The sample can be larger than either the coherenc

The optic nerve collects axons signals from the retinal ganglion cells and transmits visual signal to the brain. Large animal models of optic nerve injury are essential for translating novel therapeutic strategies from rodent models to clinical application due to their closer similarities to humans in size and anatomy. Here we describe some in vivo methods to evaluate the function and structure of the retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and optic nerve (ON) in large animals, including visual evoked potential (VEP), pattern electroretinogram (PERG) and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Both goat an

We present a case of a patient with bilateral posterior ischaemic optic neuropathy in the previously unreported setting of hysterectomy indicated for severe postpartum haemorrhage. The diagnosis was based on clinical and paraclinical examinations, including MRI of the head, electroretinography (ERG) and visual evoked potentials (VEP) testing. During 1 year of follow-up, repeated optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans demonstrated optic disc atrophy, which was interpreted as a sign of direct retrograde ganglion cell degeneration after ischaemic damage to the retrolaminar part of the optic ner

Nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NA-AION) is a major cause of blindness in patients above the age of 50 years that is believed to occur due to insufficient blood supply to the optic nerve head. Patients typically present with sudden-onset, unilateral, painless vision loss accompanied by decreased visual acuity and field. Diagnostic work-up includes taking a thorough history and clinical examination including relative afferent pupillary defect, visual fields, and optical coherence tomography. Despite the abundance of NA-AION, there are currently no definitive treatment options,

Ophthalmological and neurological signs and symptoms were assessed in a patient diagnosed with retrobulbar optic neuritis associated with multiple sclerosis (MS). The patient presented with progressive decrease of visual acuity, intermittent diplopia, paresthesia of the left arm and equilibrium disturbances. The complete ophthalmologic examination (clinical examination, visual field, optical coherence tomography) along with an MRI exam supported the diagnosis of MS with active lesions associated with retrobulbar optic neuritis. The corticosteroid therapy, followed by betaferon led to the remis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system and leading cause of disability in young adults. Vision impairment is a common component of disability for this population of patients. Injury to the optic nerve, brainstem, and cerebellum leads to characteristic syndromes affecting both the afferent and efferent visual pathways. The objective of this review is to summarize the spectrum of eye disorders in patients with MS, their natural history, and current strategies for diagnosis and management. We emphasize the most common disorders including optic neuritis an

The distal aqueous humor outflow pathway is an essential component of aqueous humor drainage and is closely associated with intraocular pressure control after minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). However, in vivo assessment of its structure and function remains a major clinical challenge. Optical coherence tomography enables continuous visualization of the distal outflow pathway beyond Schlemm's canal through improved micrometer-scale axial resolution, although its performance is limited by tissue overlap and similar optical signals. Aqueous angiography visualizes segmental aqueous humo

PURPOSE: Excitotoxicity has been linked to the pathogenesis of ocular diseases and injuries and may involve early degeneration of both anterior and posterior visual pathways. However, their spatiotemporal relationships remain unclear. We hypothesized that the effects of excitotoxic retinal injury (ERI) on the visual system can be revealed in vivo by diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imagining (DTI), manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imagining (MRI), and optical coherence tomography (OCT).
METHODS: Diffusion tensor MRI was performed at 9.4 Tesla to monitor white matter integrity changes

UNLABELLED: Clinicians should be aware that internal limiting membrane (ILM) defects may occur concurrently with epiretinal membrane, and starting ILM peeling at the ILM defect margin may be useful in such cases.
ABSTRACT: We describe a useful surgical technique for the treatment of idiopathic epiretinal membrane with concurrent internal limiting membrane (ILM) defect, in which ILM peeling was started from the ILM defect margin. A dissociated optic nerve fiber layer-like appearance on fundus examination and optical coherence tomography may suggest an ILM defect.
