Prostate specific antigen (PSA) or human kallikrein 3 (hK3) has long been an effective biomarker for prostate cancer. Now, other members of the tissue kallikrein (KLK) gene family are fast becoming of clinical interest due to their potential as prognostic biomarkers. particularly for hormone dependent cancers. The tissue kallikreins are serine proteases that are encoded by highly conserved multi-gene family clusters in rodents and humans. The rat and mouse loci contain 10 and 25 functional genes, respectively, while the human locus at 19q 13.4 contains 15 genes. The structural organization and

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is characterized by distal muscle weakness and wasting, often resulting in foot deformities and gait disturbances, distal sensory impairment and by more or less typical changes in sural nerve biopsy. CMT type 1 is also characterized by reduced nerve conduction velocities. For these demyelinating subtypes, most frequently a 1.5 Mb tandem duplication in chromosome 17p11.2-12 comprising the gene for the peripheral myelin protein 22 (PMP22) is observed (CMT1A), but point mutations in PMP22 have also rarely been reported. X-linked, dominant CMTX1 disease is the sec

It is difficult to summarize an article of this type, in which the author is certain that his case has been presented fairly, but is aware that other views that are contrary could be stated and endorsed by pertinent clinical cases. Bearing this fact in mind, I wish to reiterate the following: Lateral canals are demonstrated in endodontic cases with much less frequency than they exist. This variance rarely, if ever, causes an endodontic failure. Some demonstrated lateral canals may really be other conditions. Preoperative evaluation should include examination of radiographs for lateral, as well

OBJECTIVES: Consideration of the causes of unilateral paranasal sinusitis, which frequently occurs in routine medical care and is often associated with odontogenic infection.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective data analysis.
METHODS: A review of the charts of all 190 patients treated for unilateral paranasal sinusitis at our department between 2005 and 2012 was carried out. All patients were diagnosed based on clinical signs, symptoms, and imaging findings, including computed tomography (CT), orthopantomography (OP), and other modalities. Patients were classified in three groups: patients with odon

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the oral health status of patients with mildly decreased glomerular filtration rate (GFR).
STUDY DESIGN: The study group comprised 80 adults with GFR 60-89 mL/min. A group of 80 age- and gender-matched control subjects with GFR > or =90 mL/min were selected. Medical history, clinical examination, and biochemistry blood tests were performed in patients and control subjects. Renal function was estimated using the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease formula. A single dentist performed an intraoral examination of each patient and control subject.

All 1482 emergency room dental visits to Seattle's Children's Hospital and Medical Center from 1982 to 1991 were studied to evaluate trends in patients seeking care: 60% of visits were for trauma, the remainder for infection or other reasons. The number of visits was 2.1 times greater in 1991 than in 1982. Comparing the periods of 1982-1987 and 1988-1991, there was an increase in the proportion of infection-related visits from 30.5 to 43.5% of all visits. Spring/summer and weekends had the highest volume. More males (61.2%) than females received care. The largest number of visits (47.9%) occur

There are certain complications involved in maxillary ostetomies; devitalization of teeth, loss of part or all of the osteotomized segment, and relapse are possible problems. The paramount cause of the complications in seven different cases seemed to be the interruption of the blood supply to the operative site. A seven-point guideline is formulated; it integrates preoperative planning, surgical procqedures, and postoperative care.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1E (CMT1E) is an inherited autosomal dominant peripheral neuropathy caused by mutations in the peripheral myelin protein 22 (PMP22) gene. The identical leucine-to-proline (L16P) amino acid substitution in PMP22 is carried by the Trembler J (TrJ) mouse and is found in CMT1E patients presenting with early-onset disease. Peripheral nerves of patients diagnosed with CMT1E display a complex and varied histopathology, including Schwann cell hyperproliferation, abnormally thin myelin, axonal degeneration, and subaxonal morphological changes. Here, we have taken an unb

The Contactin-associated protein 1 (Cntnap1) mouse mutants fail to establish proper axonal domains in myelinated axons. Human CNTNAP1 mutations are linked to hypomyelinating neuropathy-3, which causes severe neurological deficits. To understand the human neuropathology and to model human CNTNAP1C323R and CNTNAP1R764C mutations, we generated Cntnap1C324R and Cntnap1R765C mouse mutants, respectively. Both Cntnap1 mutants show weight loss, reduced nerve conduction, and progressive motor dysfunction. The paranodal ultrastructure shows everted myelin loops and the absence of axo-glial junctions. Bi

AIM: Hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP) is a peripheral neuropathy with autosomal dominant inheritance. Diagnosis can be made from the characteristic abnormalities determined by nerve conduction studies (NCS), including subclinical deficits at physiological compression sites. Heterozygous deletion of the chromosome 17p11.2-p12 region including the peripheral myelin protein 22 gene (PMP22) is the cause in the majority of cases. However, the loss of function of PMP22 due to frameshift-causing insertion/deletion, missense, nonsense, or splice-site disrupting variants

Dentigerous cysts are benign odontogenic cysts associated with the crowns of unerupted, embedded, or impacted teeth. Most of them are associated with mandibular third molars, followed by maxillary third molars and canines. They are usually asymptomatic, and rarely do they grow extensively and compress the adjacent anatomic structures. We report 5 cases of extensive maxillary dentigerous cysts presenting with sinonasal and orbital symptoms. A literature review for similar presentations of dentigerous cysts has demonstrated 21 cases. Recognition of the extensive growth potential of the dentigero

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the oral hygiene status and dental treatment requirements in children with epilepsy.
METHODS: The treatment group consisted of 211 children with epilepsy (120 boys and 91 girls, 4-15 years old, mean age 7.85 + or - 2.98 years). The control group consisted of healthy children, matched by age and gender. Clinical features of the patients were obtained from hospital records. Clinical examinations were conducted, under standard light, using a plane buccal mirror, a dental probe and air drying to evaluate caries experience and to record the

Many cases demonstrating the oral manifestations of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) have been reported; however, tooth development in jaw lesions has rarely been mentioned. This paper reports the case of a 3-year-old Japanese girl with LCH suffering from multiple osteolytic lesions of the skull and jaw bones. She was referred to our paediatric clinic because of swelling of the mucogingival folds in the upper and lower primary molar regions. The patient responded well to steroid therapy and the osteolytic lesions resolved. There was an accompanying development of permanent tooth germs inclu

Oral biopsies comprising five periapical cysts, three cases of exuberant granulation tissue in extraction sockets and one case of a mandibular radiopaque structure, all displaying material consistent with cellulose fibers on routine histologic examination, were subjected to histochemical, polarization, fluorescence and scanning electron microscopical, energy dispersive X-ray and chemical investigations. Routine screening of periapical lesions with polarization microscopy and identification of possible cellulose fibers with Calcofluor White is advocated. Further, attention is drawn to endodonti

From January 1975 through July 1981, ten patients with mediastinitis complicating an oropharyngeal infection, that is, a form of mediastinitis best termed as DNM, were encountered at our institution. Based upon rather relatively stringent diagnostic criteria, 21 other instances were found in the literature from 1960 to 1980, a time period well into the antibiotic era. The predominant underlying oropharyngeal infection was of odontogenic origin, specifically, infection involving the mandibular molars. Bacteriologically, DNM is most frequently a polymicrobial process, with anaerobes playing a ma
