This study aimed to evaluate the effects of quinestrol, a synthetic oestrogen homologue with reproductive toxicity, on the secretion of reproductive hormones and antioxidant status in adult male rat. Our results showed that quinestrol exposure significantly decreased the weight of the testis, epididymides, seminal vesicle, and prostate, as well as the sperm counts in the cauda epididymis of rats. Sixty-three Staphylococcus aureus strains (40 from clinical sources and 23 from food sources) were examined for toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1) using PCR, phage typed using the international phage set (IPS) and tested for their susceptibility to antibiotics. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the pathogenicity of Staphylococcus lugdunensis in acute oral infection.
STUDY DESIGN: S. lugdunensis was isolated from patients with acute oral infections and from healthy control subjects. Antibiotic susceptibility, in vitro cellular toxicity, in vivo virulence, and hemolytic activity testing and dot blot analysis were performed. A phase II trial of Homoharringtonine (HHT) was performed in 15 patients with recurrent or progressive malignant glioma. The drug was administered at a initial dose of 4 mg/m2/day by continuous 5 day intravenous infusion (3 mg/m2/day x 5 days for heavily pretreated patients). A deficiency of exogenous and endogenous carnitine is present in those pathologies in which the most important clinical sign is represented by weakness and steatosis. We have studied the serum levels of carnitine in 14 children with hepatic disease (8 with acute HAV hepatitis, 2 with acute HBV hepatitis, 2 with toxic hepatitis, 2 with chronic hepatitis). We have tested the effect of dexamethasone (DEX) and chlorpromazine (CPZ) on the lethal effect of IL-1, TNF and endotoxin. Doxifluridine, a new fluoropyrimidine derivative, was tested in a cooperative phase II trial by the Swiss Group for Clinical Cancer Research in advanced measurable colorectal cancer. The drug was given in a five consecutive day schedule by a bolus intravenous injection at a dose of 4 g/m2 per day and repeated every three to four weeks. Brodifacoum, a second-generation "superwarfarin", is a long-acting anticoagulant rodenticide (LAAR) characterized by an extended half-life. Its toxicity primarily manifests as excessive or abnormal bleeding from the skin, mucous membranes, gastrointestinal tract, and urinary tract. However, aortic dissection (AD)-a rare and catastrophic medical event-has seldom been reported as a complication of such poisoning.
