Efficacy of Ki-67 antigen staining in Papanicolaou (Pap) smears in post-menopausal women with atypia--an audit.

In cervical smears from post-menopausal women with mucosal atrophy it can be difficult to distinguish atrophic epithelial cell groups from neoplastic cell groups on cytomorphological criteria only. The consequence of post-menopausal atypia is that the woman is referred for a repeat smear after local oestrogen treatment or for colposcopy. We investigated whether immunocytochemical expression of Ki-67 (MIB-1) on the primary Papanicolaou-stained smear could be of any diagnostic help. Our data showed that negative Ki-67 expression is a very reliable indicator of a normal atrophic cell pattern, and

Cervical cancer screening practices among older women: results from the Maryland Cervical Cancer Case-Control Study.

Considerable evidence shows a large proportion of older women have either never had a Pap test or have significant gaps in their history of cervical cancer screening. Differences in health care utilization patterns by age, cohort differences in use of medical subspecialities, and provider reluctance to perform cancer screening within the general medical care encounter have been suggested as reasons for underscreening. Our study conducted in 1985 documents prior health care utilization patterns of 153 cases of Maryland women with invasive cervical cancer compared with a matched control group. A

Cancer screening in women by internal medicine resident physicians.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that women may not have consistent cancer surveillance. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of internal medicine resident physicians' screening methods for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer of women aged 50 or older. RESULTS: Resident physicians did breast examinations in 39.1%, mammography in 37.3%, Pap smears in 32.7%, rectal examinations in 37.3%, fecal occult blood testing in 39.1%, and flexible sigmoidoscopy in 11.8% of the women. They instructed 3.6% to do breast self-examination. There was no statistically significant difference in the brea

CCR2-V64I polymorphism is associated with increased risk of cervical cancer but not with HPV infection or pre-cancerous lesions in African women.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer, caused by specific oncogenic types of human papillomavirus (HPV), is the second most common cancer in women worldwide. A large number of young sexually active women get infected by HPV but only a small fraction of them have persistent infection and develop cervical cancer pointing to co- factors including host genetics that might play a role in outcome of the HPV infection. This study investigated the role of CCR2-V64I polymorphism in cervical cancer, pre-cancers and HPV infection in South African women resident in Western Cape. CCR2-V64I polymorphism has been prev

Longitudinal clinical evaluation of a novel antibody cocktail for detection of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions on cervical cytology specimens.

CONTEXT: Although cervical cancer screening by cytology is successful, the test continues to show relatively poor operating characteristics. Cell cycle markers may enhance detection of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions. OBJECTIVE: To determine the clinical usefulness of ProExC, an immunocytochemical assay for cell cycle components, performed on routine cervical cytology samples. DESIGN: Cervical cytology samples were collected using the SurePath method. Residual cells remaining after preparation of the Papanicolaou-stained slide were used to make a second slide for ProExC staining

HPV-ISH-Negative Invasive Cervical Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Histologic and Pap Test Results.

INTRODUCTION: A causal link between infection with a high-risk strain of human papilloma virus (hrHPV) and the development of cervical squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is well established. However, a small number of SCCs are hrHPV-negative by either HPV co-DNA testing and/or HPV-in situ hybridization (HPV-ISH) at the time of diagnosis. These apparently hrHPV-negative lesions are poorly understood, specifically whether hrHPV-positive precursor lesions exist, which would be detected through hrHPV-based screening. METHODS: A search of the pathology archives at the Johns Hopkins Hospital identified

Patient acceptance of HPV self-sampling approach for cervical cancer screening: evidence from a pilot study in Kazakhstan.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer remains a major global health burden, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. In Kazakhstan, cervical cancer incidence is rising, despite an established cytology-based screening program. Self-sampling for human papillomavirus (HPV) genotyping is suggested as a promising strategy to improve screening participation, yet it has not been evaluated in Kazakhstan. Thus, this study aims to perform a preliminary assessment of self-sampling approach acceptance among Kazakhstani women. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among women attending outpatient

Effect of Self-Sampling HPV DNA Testing on Cervical Cancer Screening in Singapore's Primary Care: Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: In Singapore, cervical cancer screening rates remain suboptimal, with only clinician sampling included in the national screening program. Self-sampling human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing might overcome barriers to clinician-based screening and improve uptake. We assessed the effect of offering self-sampling alongside clinician sampling on screening uptake and high-risk HPV detection compared with clinician sampling alone. METHODS: This pragmatic, 2-arm randomized controlled trial with Zelen design was conducted across NHG Polyclinics, NHG Health in Singapore. Women aged 30-69

Barriers to Cervical Cancer Screening through Pap Smear Examination among Women Attending the Gynecology Polyclinic at Dr. Zainoel Abidin General Hospital in 2024: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer remains the fourth most common cancer among women globally and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Despite the availability of effective screening methods such as the Pap smear, screening uptake remains suboptimal. Barriers such as limited awareness, socioeconomic challenges, cultural beliefs, and inadequate access to healthcare services contribute to this gap. Identifying these factors is essential to inform effective interventions and reduce cervical cancer mortality. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify the

Health Care Provider Willingness to Recommend Self-collected Tests for Human Papillomavirus: A Mixed Methods Examination of Associated Factors.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer disproportionately affects those who are underscreened. Human papillomavirus self-collection is a promising tool to expand screening. OBJECTIVE: Study objectives were to examine 1) factors (provider characteristics and practice type) associated with and 2) attitudes (perceived benefits and concerns) toward using human papillomavirus self-collection for cervical cancer screening in clinical practice. METHODS: This study had a mixed method design; prior to regulatory approval of self-collection, we conducted a national survey and interviews of health care provider

Benchmarking high-risk human papillomavirus testing against cytology and biopsy results in the detection of cervical dysplasia to inform clinical screening guidelines.

INTRODUCTION: The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommendation for cervical cancer screening includes the option to screen with high-risk human papilloma virus (hrHPV) alone, but some studies have reported that hrHPV testing alone missed precancerous and cancerous lesions. In this study, we evaluated the test performance characteristics of hrHPV in detecting cervical dysplasia with cervical cytology and biopsy as comparators. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of Papanicolaou smears between January and December 2019 performed at our institutio

Cervical cancer screening: efficacy of PAX1 and JAM3 methylation assay in the triage of atypical squamous cell of undetermined significance (ASC-US).

BACKGROUND: Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) often present diagnostic challenges with cytology-based results, leading to potential underdiagnosis or overdiagnosis. An effective triage method is essential for managing these cases to reduce unnecessary referrals and treatment. METHODS: A total of 322 women diagnosed with ASC-US were tested for HPV-DNA and the PAX1 and JAM3 methylation (PAX1m/JAM3m) test in the study. RESULTS: Methylation levels of PAX1 and JAM3 were significantly elevated in cervical lesions classified as CIN2 or more severe lesions (CIN2+). The me
