In 1875, 7 years prior to the description of the Koch bacillus, Klebs visualized the first Streptococcus pneumoniae in a pleural fluid. Since then, this organism has played a determinant role in biomedical science. From a biological point of view, it was largely implicated in the development of passive and active immunization by serotherapy and vaccination, respectively. Genetic transformation was also first observed in S. pneumoniae, leading to the discovery of DNA. From a clinical point of view, S. pneumoniae is still today a prime cause of otitis media in children and of pneumonia in all ag

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global health threat that undermines treatment in humans and animals. In Zambia, where livestock production underpins food security and livelihoods, AMR challenges are aggravated by limited surveillance, weak diagnostics, and poor regulatory enforcement, facilitating the spread of resistant pathogens across the human-animal-environment interface. This study aims to analyse AMR patterns of bacterial isolates collected from Zambia's animal health sector between 2020 and 2024, to generate evidence that informs national AMR surveilla

Staphylococcus haemolyticus is a major cause of late-onset sepsis in neonates, and endemic clones are often multidrug-resistant. The bacteria can also act as a genetic reservoir for more pathogenic bacteria. Molecular epidemiology is important in understanding bacterial pathogenicity and preventing infection. To describe the molecular epidemiology of S. haemolyticus isolated from neonatal blood cultures at a Swedish neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) over 4 decades, including antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), virulence factors, and comparison to international isolates. Isolates were whole-g

Mycobacterium abscessus is an emerging human pathogen leading to significant morbidity and even mortality, intrinsically resistant to almost all the antibiotics available and so can be a nightmare. Mechanisms of its intrinsic resistance remain not fully understood. Here, we selected and confirmed an M. abscessus transposon mutant that is hypersensitive to multiple drugs including rifampin, rifabutin, vancomycin, clofazimine, linezolid, imipenem, levofloxacin, cefoxitin, and clarithromycin. The gene MAB_0189c encoding a putative arabinosyltransferase C was found to be disrupted, using a newly d

BACKGROUND: Many surgeons add topical antibiotics to irrigation solutions assuming that this has a local effect and eliminates bacteria. However, prior studies have suggested that the addition of antibiotics to irrigation solution confers little benefit, adds cost, may potentiate anaphylactic reactions, and may contribute to antimicrobial resistance. We sought to compare the antimicrobial efficacy and cytotoxicity of an irrigation solution containing polymyxin-bacitracin with other commonly used irrigation solutions.
METHODS: Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were exposed to irrigati

The Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) resistant against all kinds of beta-lactam antibiotics. Moreover, resistances against other antibiotics have gradually started to develop. In the last decades, MRSA started as a serious problem only in hospitals, but in recent years it also rose as an alarming community pathogen. In addition to the resistances against Penicillin which emerged in the 1940s. with the use of beta-lactamase proof antibiotics in the 1960s, the resistance of S. aureus against Methicillin started to develop. According to the

Enterococci have recently emerged as nosocomial pathogens worldwide. Their ubiquitous nature determines their frequent finding in foods as contaminants. In this study, we aimed to determine the counts, species diversity, antimicrobial resistance profile, and to screen for a set of virulence genes among enterococci. Enterococcus were identified from 75.7% (125/165) of chilled chicken carcasses, belonging to seven companies, sampled from retail markets in Abu Dhabi Emirate, United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.). Overall, the samples, with a mean Enterococcus count of 2.58 log10 colony-forming unit (CFU)
