Mental health and gender dysphoria: A review of the literature.

Studies investigating the prevalence of psychiatric disorders among trans individuals have identified elevated rates of psychopathology. Research has also provided conflicting psychiatric outcomes following gender-confirming medical interventions. This review identifies 38 cross-sectional and longitudinal studies describing prevalence rates of psychiatric disorders and psychiatric outcomes, pre- and post-gender-confirming medical interventions, for people with gender dysphoria. It indicates that, although the levels of psychopathology and psychiatric disorders in trans people attending service

Risk factors for poor outcomes and therapeutic strategies for seasonal and pandemic influenza.

Seasonal influenza is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide annually while pandemic influenza, a unique entity, poses distinct challenges. The pediatric population is the primary vector for epidemics and the main focus of this article. While primary prevention with universal influenza vaccination is the best protection against significant illness, the antigenic shift and drift unique to influenza viruses leave a large population at risk even with universal vaccination. Early in an epidemic various diagnostic tests are available and discussed here. However, once an epidemic is es

Bridging community and prison for older adults: invoking human rights and elder and intergenerational family justice.

PURPOSE: Older adults in prison present a significant health and human rights challenge for the criminal justice system. To date, there is no known study that provides a comprehensive examination or portrait of older persons in prison. The purpose of this paper is to understand individual, family, system, and community vulnerabilities that can complicate successful community reintegration for these individuals. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: This study provides a cross-sectional, descriptive analysis of biopsychosocial, spiritual, and prison use characteristics associated with a sample of 677 o

E-cigarette knowledge, attitudes, and use in opioid dependent smokers.

Individuals in treatment for opioid dependence have smoking rates 3-5 times greater than the U.S. prevalence rate. Traditional smoking cessation strategies have been ineffective in this population. Novel approaches are needed as well as harm reduction avenues. E-cigarettes (e-cigs) may provide such a novel harm reduction and cessation opportunity, but little is known about the knowledge of, attitudes about, and usage of e-cigs in opioid dependent smokers. The current study enrolled 315 opioid dependent smokers (164 methadone, 151 buprenorphine), treated in the same health system in Fall River,

Degenerative joint diseases and enthesopathies in a Joseon Dynasty population from Korea.

The purpose of this research is to examine whether degenerative joint diseases (DJD) and enthesopathies can be used in conjunction in research that aims to understand the activity levels of past populations. To examine this, the relationship between DJD and enthesopathies needs to be explored while taking different peripheral joints and types of entheses into account. In addition, the present research aims to examine the frequency of DJD and enthesopathies in the Joseon Dynasty population of Korea with comparisons with data in other skeletal series of similar dates. In this research, 173 indiv

Immunisation coverage in children with cerebral palsy compared with the general population.

AIM: To compare immunisation coverage of a cerebral palsy (CP) cohort with the known general population vaccination coverage statistics. METHODS: A cohort of children with CP aged less than 7 years was extracted from the Victorian Cerebral Palsy Register. The vaccination status of these children was compared with the general population using the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register (ACIR). Details that were audited included overall 'up-to-date' status of immunisations and individual vaccines missed. RESULTS: The CP cohort consisted of 449 children. Eighty-six or 19.2% (95% confidence i

Cardiac catheterization in the dialysis population in 2012: we know more, but much remains unknown.

Chronic kidney disease is now widely accepted as an independent risk factor for coronary disease and the dialysis population may represent the highest risk subgroup. Among all dialysis patients, a cardiac cause of mortality has been estimated at 40%. In addition, prior studies have demonstrated that when cardiac catheterization is obtained in a consecutive series of asymptomatic diabetic patients on dialysis the rates of coronary disease can approach 50%. However, the ability to define the problem continues to be greater than the ability to treat or prevent it. Coronary revascularization strat

Chronic musculoskeletal pain predicted hospitalisation due to serious medical conditions in a 10 year follow up study.

BACKGROUND: The aim was to examine if self reported chronic regional pain (CRP) and chronic widespread pain (CWP) predicted inpatient care due to serious medical conditions such as cerebrovascular diseases, ischemic heart diseases, neoplasms and infectious diseases in a general population cohort over a ten year follow-up period. METHODS: A ten-year follow up of a cohort from the general adult population in two health care districts with mixed urban and rural population in the south of Sweden, that in 1995 participated in a survey on health and musculoskeletal pain experience. Women and tobacco control policies: social-structural and psychosocial contributions to vulnerability to tobacco use and exposure.

This article explores the psychosocial and social-structural vulnerability in relation to women's tobacco use, smoke exposure and responses to policy, and examines these issues in the context of women's lives and roles, describing forward looking strategies that could improve research and equity in outcomes for women. Various literatures on smoking among women and girls, and how women and sub-populations of women respond to tobacco control policies are reviewed. Specific sub-populations exhibiting more tobacco use and exposure are described, such as young pregnant and mothering women and low-i

Systemic cytokine signatures associated with volcanic emisions exposure and respiratory disease after the cumbre vieja eruption-ashes project.

INTRODUCTION: In September 2021, the eruption of the Tajogaite volcano on La Palma (Spain) released large amounts of toxic gases and particulate matter over three months. This study, part of the ASHES Project, analyses the serum cytokine profile and its relationship with exposure to these pollutants in general population, asthma patients, and occupationally exposed workers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 102 participants (69 women; median age 50 years) were included. Structured interviews were conducted, and serum samples were collected to quantify 48 biomarkers related

Alternative model for personality disorders and drug use among the homeless individuals.

OBJECTIVES: This article aims to examine the contribution of the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) in relation to social exclusion and substance use. Indeed, numerous studies converge in highlighting a higher prevalence of personality disorders and substance use among homeless individuals. Since its publication in 2013 the DSM-5 has proposed an Alternative Model for Personality Disorders, allowing for an assessment of personality based on two criteria: the level of personality functioning (Criterion A) and pathological personality traits (Criterion B). The tools developed for

Predictive ability of fetal growth charts in identifying kindergarten-age developmental challenges: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine recommends defining fetal growth restriction as an estimated fetal weight or abdominal circumference <10th percentile of a population-based reference. However, because multiple references are available, an understanding of their ability to identify infants at increased risk due to fetal growth restriction is critical. Previous studies have focused on the ability of different population references to identify short-term outcomes, but fetal growth restriction also has longer-term consequences for child development. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed

Depression and sleep-related symptoms in an adult, indigenous, North American population.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Symptoms related to sleep disorders are common and may have substantial adverse impacts on mental health. Indigenous North Americans (American Indian) are a medically vulnerable population with reduced access to healthcare services. The purposes of this study were to assess (1) the prevalence of sleep symptoms and (2) the relationships between symptoms and depression in this population. METHODS: We performed a community-based, door-to-door, cross-sectional survey of 3 indigenous North American groups (Gitxsan, Nisga'a and Tsimshian) living in the northwestern part of British

A systematic review of water, sanitation, and hygiene practices in developing countries: exploring the effects on public health.

BACKGROUND: Lack of proper access to safe Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) is a pervasive cause of preventable disease and mortality in developing countries, disproportionately impacting the most vulnerable portions of the population. Despite activity globally, much still needs to be accomplished regarding expansion of WASH coverage, and the issue still remains a defining public health challenge. This systematic review synthesizes available evidence to assess the current status of WASH practices, associated health outcomes, and the barriers to effective safe WASH behaviors in developing c

Antibody Responses After BA.5/BF.7 Breakthrough Infection in People Living with HIV.

Background: People living with HIV (PLWH) constitute a vulnerable population during the COVID-19 pandemic; however, it remains uncertain whether long-term suppressive antiretroviral therapy (ART) restores sufficient immune competence to support robust hybrid immunity. While vaccination followed by breakthrough infection-termed hybrid immunity-typically elicits potent humoral responses in immunocompetent individuals, the functional quality and breadth of these responses against evolving Omicron subvariants remain poorly characterized in PLWH. This study aimed to assess functional antibody respo

The construction and psychometric evaluation of the self-structure scale: a bidimensional model of self-structure.

BACKGROUND: Although psychoanalytic and personality theories have consistently highlighted the central role of self-structure, existing psychometric tools predominantly measure isolated personality traits or narcissistic subtypes, with scarce instruments dedicated to evaluating the organizational mechanisms governing self-related functioning. This study puts forward a bidimensional theoretical framework of self-structure and constructs the Scale of Self-Structure (SOSS), aiming to empirically verify the measurable manifestation of the proposed theoretical dimensions. METHODS: Two sequential e

Assessment of heatwave impacts on child feeding practices across 36 low-income and middle-income countries: a cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Optimal feeding practices during the first 2 years of life are vital for child survival and growth. Current nutrition programmes in low-income and middle-income countries focus primarily on long-term dietary improvement, overlooking the acute challenges that heatwaves present to daily feeding practices in already nutritionally vulnerable populations. METHODS: By using the Demographic and Health Surveys data, we analysed data from the youngest child aged 6-23 months (including both infants aged 6-11 months and young children aged 12-23 months) in 293 137 households across 36 low-in…
