[Alcohol intoxication].

Alcohol intoxication is the principal drug addiction in many countries of the world. It affects all age groups, both sexes and almost all social groups. Mortality associated with acute alcohol poisoning on its own is exceptional, but it can be an important factor if it coexists with recreational drugs. It is directly responsible for more than half of traffic accidents. Diagnosis is easy by means of anamnesis and clinical examination, and can be confirmed by determining the level of ethanol in the bloodstream. Supportive care is the best therapy in order to protect the patient from secondary co

Cortisol and beta-endorphin response in alcoholics and alcohol abusers following a high naloxone dosage.

The course of plasma cortisol and beta-endorphin-like immunoreactivity (beta-EP-IR) was determined following a single i.v. administration of 20 mg naloxone. The test subjects included 20 male alcoholics (medication-free), investigated one to three days and four weeks after the onset of abstinence, as well as 10 short-time abstinent alcohol abusers and 10 healthy control subjects. The mean baseline values of cortisol and beta-EP-IR remained within normal limits in all groups. The significant decrease in the plasma cortisol baseline values in the alcoholics after 4 weeks abstinence may indicate

Evaluation of dose-response relationships between smoking tobacco, alcohol consumption and oral cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption are established independent risk factors for oral carcinogenesis, yet the quantitative dose-response relationships for key exposure variables remain unclear. METHODS: A systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42024531040) was conducted following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional studies reporting relative risks (RRs) or odds ratios for at least one of the exposure variables, such as smoking frequency, smoking duration, alcohol duration, and age at smoking initiat

Timing matters: circadian rhythm disruption in alcohol-associated peripheral organ pathophysiology.

Circadian rhythms influence the pathophysiological effects of alcohol. This review examines how alcohol disrupts circadian regulation in peripheral organs, particularly the liver, intestine, cardiovascular system, and skeletal muscle, and how circadian disruption exacerbates metabolic dysfunction and organ injury. Evidence from preclinical and human studies indicates that both genetic and environmental circadian disruption increases alcohol-induced gut permeability, systemic inflammation, and liver disease. This review also presents how other lifestyle and environmental factors such as diet, s

Smoking, alcohol consumption, and psoriasis risk: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Smoking and alcohol consumption are modifiable behavioral exposures of public health relevance that may contribute to psoriasis risk, but the epidemiologic evidence remains inconsistent. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library from inception to December 18, 2025, and included observational studies reporting adjusted associations between smoking or alcohol consumption and the risk of psoriasis. Random-effects meta-analyses and restricted cubic spline models were used where appropriate. RESULTS: Thirty observational studies involving more than

Alcohol Consumption and Sexual Aggression Perpetration: A Meta-Analytic Review.

Sexual aggression often has serious and lasting effects on victims of all genders. One key risk factor for sexual aggression is alcohol consumption. Alcohol consumption promotes sexual aggression by disrupting cognitive functions, including the ability to process the internal and external cues that regulate social behavior. This meta-analysis of the experimental literature with alcohol administration protocols aimed to quantify this relationship by updating previous work and by examining potential moderators. Acute alcohol consumption was operationalized using the experimental condition partic

A Meta-Analytic Review of the Relationship Between Alcohol and Bystander Intervention for Sexual Assault.

Sexual assault (SA) remains a significant public health issue, and there is growing interest in SA prevention approaches. Bystander intervention (BI) programs aimed at increasing individuals' willingness to intervene when they witness problematic situations show promise. However, social contexts that are high-risk for SA often involve alcohol, which may impact bystanders' abilities to intervene. Indeed, theoretical and empirical work has suggested that alcohol may impact BI. However, research has yet to quantitatively and systematically review extant literature to quantify whether and how much

A systematic review on the risk of developing cancer and frequency of alcohol consumption behaviors in US adults.

BACKGROUND: The frequency and quantity of alcohol consumption, even at moderate levels, influence both cancer incidence and outcomes. This systematic review examines the relationship between varying levels of alcohol consumption and the risk of developing cancer in U.S. adults. It also explores the comorbid conditions that may increase long-term cancer risk among alcohol users and identifies the social and demographic factors that place certain population groups at heightened risk. METHODS: The review followed the Arksey & O'Malley Framework and the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) recommendatio

Using Virtual Reality in Sexual Aggression Alcohol Administration Research: Opportunities and Challenges.

OBJECTIVE: This article explores methodological opportunities, challenges, and potential solutions for alcohol administration research that uses a virtual reality (VR) analogue for sexual aggression. METHOD: We briefly review relevant sexual aggression, alcohol administration, and VR literature. The strengths and limitations of different types of analogues are described. RESULTS: Most existing sexual aggression analogues use sexual assault scenarios that end the same way for all participants, who are then asked how they would respond in that situation. Studies using these analogues have prod

Chronic Pain and Cannabis Use Frequency, Intensity, and Severity in Young Adults.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis use is common among young adults and is associated with many physical and mental health problems. Persons with chronic pain may be particularly susceptible to using cannabis at high rates, including for analgesic purposes, thus exposing themselves to greater risk of cannabis-related problems. However, little research has examined connections between chronic pain and cannabis use in the young adult population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants were young adults from the community who were recruited for a larger health behaviors study. The present sample included 403 pers

Application of a practice-based approach in variable selection for a prediction model development study of hospital-induced delirium.

BACKGROUND: Prognostic models of hospital-induced delirium, that include potential predisposing and precipitating factors, may be used to identify vulnerable patients and inform the implementation of tailored preventive interventions. It is recommended that, in prediction model development studies, candidate predictors are selected on the basis of existing knowledge, including knowledge from clinical practice. The purpose of this article is to describe the process of identifying and operationalizing candidate predictors of hospital-induced delirium for application in a prediction model develop

Socioeconomic Inequalities in Alcohol and Tobacco Consumption: A National Ecological Study in Mexican Adolescents.

Alcohol and cigarettes are the psychoactive substances that adolescents use most frequently. When both addictions are combined, they carry the worst burden of disease globally. The objective of this study was to identify whether socioeconomic factors correlate with alcohol and tobacco consumption in Mexican adolescents aged 10 years or more and to establish the relationship in the consumption between the two substances. This ecological study utilized data describing alcohol and tobacco consumption among adolescents aged 10-16 years (n = 48,837 ≈ N = 11,621,100). Having ever consumed any alcoho

The differential effects of verbal sexual coercion and forcible sexual assault on alcohol use and consequence trajectories in the first year of college.

OBJECTIVE: Verbal sexual coercion (VSC) is the most prevalent and pervasive form of sexual victimization that women experience, yet the long-term harmful effects of this type of experience are unknown. The current study examined the effects of verbal sexual coercion versus forcible sexual assault (FSA) on alcohol use and alcohol consequences, two deleterious outcomes that have been linked to sexual victimization. METHOD: In a sample of college women (N = 649), lifetime history of VSC and FSA were examined as predictors of trajectories of alcohol outcomes with latent growth models. Participant

Deconvolving breath alcohol concentration from biosensor measured transdermal alcohol level under uncertainty: a Bayesian approach.

The posterior distribution (PD) of random parameters in a distributed parameter-based population model for biosensor measured transdermal alcohol is estimated. The output of the model is transdermal alcohol concentration (TAC), which, via linear semigroup theory can be expressed as the convolution of blood or breath alcohol concentration (BAC or BrAC) with a filter that depends on the individual participant or subject, the biosensor hardware itself, and environmental conditions, all of which can be considered to be random under the presented framework. The distribution of the input to the mode
