A survey of 989 college students was conducted to investigate risk factors--gender, family history of alcohol abuse, family history of depression and mental illness, childhood hyperactivity, and antisocial personality-associated with alcohol abuse. Two hundred ninety-four subjects (29%) completing the alcohol subscale of the Diagnostic Interview Schedule met lifetime DSM-III criteria for alcohol abuse. The financial cost of alcohol dependence was evaluated in 133 alcoholic patients. The main amount of money spent daily on alcoholic beverages was 94 French francs, a figure that was unrelated to the patients' monthly incomes and highest in those living alone and in those drinking exclusively out of home. These results suggest that the economic cost of alcohol dependence plays a key role in the socio-professional degradation of alcoholics.

This study was designed to investigate the effects of regular alcohol consumption on chronic schizophrenic patients maintained on fluphenazine decanoate in the community. A group of patients who consumed more than 20 units of alcohol per week was compared with those who did not drink or did so only occasionally. Forty-four 5-12-week embryos obtained from mothers who abused alcohol during pregnancy were examined for brain development. A wide range of trace elements and vitamins was studied in alcoholic patients admitted for detoxification and in healthy controls. Chronic alcoholics account for an increasing number of the cases which are examined in forensic pathology. The manner and cause of death in 122 chronic alcoholics is described and compared with a previous investigation and to a group of non-alcoholics. The percentage of cases in which the manner of death is undetermined is twice as high as in the control group, whilst the percentage of suicide, surprisingly enough is only half that of the control group. The patho-anatomic findings in the liver and the causes of death are discussed in detail.

The literature on consummatory aversion (CA) conditioning in rats does provide a well-developed theoretical foundation for chemical aversion conditioning.
