A novel PLEC nonsense homozygous mutation (c.7159G > T; p.Glu2387*) causes epidermolysis bullosa simplex with muscular dystrophy and diffuse alopecia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Epidermolysis bullosa simplex with muscular dystrophy (EBS-MD; OMIM #226670) is an autosomal recessive disease, characterized mainly by skin blistering at birth or shortly thereafter, progressive muscle weakness, and rarely by alopecia. EBS-MD is caused by mutations in the PLEC gene (OMIM *601282), which encodes plectin, a structural protein expressed in several tissues, including epithelia and muscle. We describe a patient affected with EBS-MD and diffuse alopecia in which we identified a novel pathogenic mutation by PCR amplification of all coding exons and exon-intron boundaries…

Hereditary 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D-resistant rickets with alopecia in four Egyptian families: report of three novel mutations in the vitamin D receptor gene.

OBJECTIVE: To study the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene in five Egyptian patients with severe rickets and the clinical features of hereditary vitamin D-resistant rickets, including hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, total alopecia, and elevated serum levels of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D. STUDY DESIGN: We amplified and sequenced DNA samples from blood from the patients, their parents, and available family members. RESULTS: DNA sequence analyses of the VDR gene showed three novel mutations (p.Y295X, p.R343C, and p.R391H) and a previously reported one (p.R30X) in four patients, whereas no mutation was …

Cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen 4 (CTLA4) +49AG and CT60 gene polymorphisms in Alopecia Areata: a case-control association study in the Italian population.

Alopecia Areata (AA) is an autoimmune disease characterized by well-circumscribed patches of hair loss especially from the scalp. Cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen 4 (CTLA4) gene, a negative regulator of T cells, has been associated with predisposition to most autoimmune disorders. We evaluated two CTLA4 functional single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for potential association with Alopecia Areata in an Italian population using a case-control approach. We genotyped +49AG (rs231775) and CT60 (rs3087243) variants in 130 AA patients and 189 ethnically matched controls by the polymerase chain react…

Follicular mucinosis associated with scarring alopecia, oligoclonal T-cell receptor V beta expansion, and Staphylococcus aureus: when does follicular mucinosis become mycosis fungoides?

A diagnosis of alopecia mucinosa, occurring as a single scalp lesion, was made in a 40-year-old white woman who had a history of trauma. Follicular mucinosis, Staphylococcus aureus, and oligoclonal expansion of the T-cell receptor V beta chain genes 6 and 7 were present in the skin. Epidermotropic T-cell skin diseases with oligoclonal T-cell proliferations may be the result of HLA- and cytokine-determined reaction patterns to persistent antigens.

Post-Acute Sequelae of COVID-19 on Alopecia Areata in Individuals With Mental Illness in South Korea and Japan: A Binational Population-Based Cohort Study.

While previous studies have primarily focused on post-acute sequelae of COVID-19, the long-term effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on alopecia areata (AA) among individuals with mental illness remain underexplored. Thus, this study aimed to address this gap by examining the association between post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 and AA, with a specific focus on individuals with mental illness. This study utilized bi-national, large-scale, and population-based cohorts of individuals with pre-existing mental illness: a Korean nationwide cohort (K-COV-N cohort; main cohort; total n = 3 248 448) and a Ja…

The effect of a helmet type, home-use low-level light therapy device for chemotherapy-induced alopecia: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia is one of the most common adverse effects of chemotherapy. It reduces the patient's self-esteem and quality of life and the effect of therapy. Scalp cooling is the only verified current method for prevention but success is not guaranteed, particularly after receiving anthracycline-based combinations. Low-level light therapy has been clinically proven to inhibit the progress of androgenic alopecia. A previous study using human subjects shows limited benefits for low-level light therapy for patients who suffer chemotherapy-induced alopecia but an increase in the number of pr…

Incidence rate of alopecia areata in Israel: A 15-year analysis of population-based data and the emergence of young male adults as the most at-risk group.

Incidence rate and temporal trends in alopecia areata (AA) vary worldwide. As a common disorder with a major impact on life quality, there is a continuous need for comprehensive epidemiological characterization and global updates of the disease burden. We sought to perform an epidemiologic characterization of AA patients and to explore temporal trends across different subgroups using long-term health data. A retrospective population-based study was conducted in a large healthcare organization in Israel. Data were analyzed for all patients with AA between 2005 and 2019. A total of 30 805 patien…
