The volume density of bile ducts in adult normal liver has been analyzed in order to provide stereometric parameters to which refer on performing quantitative evaluations of bile duct loss in acquired liver diseases. Five livers were studied by applying a semi-automatic image analysis system (ASM 68K Leitz) to histological sections. BACKGROUND AND METHODS: Congenital cystic dilatation of the bile ducts represents an uncommon anomaly of the biliary system. We report on 6 patients suffering from cystic biliary duct dilatations which were treated in our hospital between 1980 and 1992. Clinical signs included upper abdominal pain, white or clay-colored stool, icterus and/or palpable tumor. According to the classification of Todani, 4 children had type Ia cysts, 1 child a type Va cyst and 1 child a type Ia cyst with extrahepatic biliary atresia.

The gastric epithelia of the rat after administrated with the minimal mixed bile acids and lysozyme for 9-weeks were studied using morphometric analysis and anti-Bromodeoxyuridine staining immunohistochemistry. Our results show that the atrophic changes and increased anti-BrdU antibody staining positive and mitotic cells of the pyloric glands area in the group administration only bile acids. Lysozyme inhibited bile acids activation on these changes of this area.

Biliary obstruction in liver transplants is most commonly due to stricture at the biliary anastomosis. The native common bile duct typically is normal. We retrospectively studied 28 patients with choledochocholedochostomy anastomoses who had marked native and donor extrahepatic bile duct dilatation associated with clinical evidence of biliary obstruction. Female, Swiss mice were fed semi-synthetic diets for 33 days. The diets were fibre-free (FF) or supplemented with corn bran (CB) 12%, wheat bran (WB) 12%, alfalfa (AL) 12%, pectin (P) 6%, cellulose (CL) 6%, or lignin (LG) 6%. Fibre caused little hyperplasia of the colon mucosa. The number of cells per crypt was increased 9-13% and the crypt column length by 14-19% in the CL, AL and LG groups. Guinea pigs formed gallstones when fed chow supplemented with cholesterol and cholic acid. Although the stones contained little or no cholesterol the changes in biliary bile acid and lipid composition were similar to those observed in other rodents under conditions of cholesterol gallstone formation. The extrahepatic course of both portal vein and bile ducts and their interrelation are analysed by simultaneous portography and cholangiography in 25 adult cadavers. In 37 patients with extrahepatic cholestasis of different origin, percutaneous transhepatic intubation of the bile ducts was performed for combined internal and external drainage. In 5 cases with stones in the extrahepatic bile ducts and in 12 cases with periampullary tumors, the bile ducts were drained preoperatively. A brief review about occurrence and experience of abnormalities of the biliary system is reported. The knowledge of these rare anomalies is important for the difficult diagnosis, an effective surgical therapy, and to avoide diagnostical misconstructions. 2 cases of distal intrapancreatic common bile ducts with misleading symptoms are described, which had not been yet reported in the literature.
