The owl monkey (Aotus nancymae) is a primate with a bile acid and biliary lipid profile resembling that of humans. Aotus spp. are among the rare species, including humans, that spontaneously develop cholesterol gallstones. With dietary induction the owl monkey proved a rapid, reliable model of cholesterol cholelithiasis. Six owl monkeys, three of each sex, were fed a diet supplemented with 1.5% cholesterol for 5 weeks. Retained choledochal cysts have been associated with recurrent cholangitis, portal hypertension and malignant lesions of the biliary tract. BACKGROUND: Complete atrioventricular block (AVB) is a life-threatening condition that usually occurs in elderly people with organic heart disease. We herein describe a rare case of complete AVB in a young man with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) complicated by cholecystitis and cholangitis. INTRODUCTION: Patients with acute cholecystitis who are unsuitable for cholecystectomy undergo conservative treatment or percutaneous transhepatic gallbladder drainage. As these two methods are not always successful, further treatment options are needed. Primary biliary cirrhosis was described in detail by Popper et al. in 1965. Segmentary necrosis of the interlobular bile ducts leads to progressive cholestasis of the mechanical type. Three stages, asymptomatic, cholestatic and finally terminal, are well known. The disease appears to be induced by genetic as well as by infectious and immunologic factors. There is a higher incidence of some HLA groups and sulphoxidation is deficient. Viruses such as HCV and CMV have been shown to be capable of damaging bile duct epithelia. The group most prone to develop the disease are women aged 30-65 years.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), surgery, and autopsy demonstrated that chronic pancreatitis in China is mainly secondary to cholelithiasis and other diseases of the bile ducts. Cellular immunity against human bile proteins was investigated by the leukocyte migration inhibition test (LMIT) with 13 primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) patients, 10 chronic aggressive hepatitis (CAH) patients and 21 healthy adults.
