Examination of paraffin-embedded testes of domestic cats and dogs by light and scanning electron microscopy.

This study was designed to determine the appropriate section thickness for SEM analysis of paraffin-embedded testes. This study used paraffin-embedded testes from 6 adult cats and 6 adult dogs. Tissue blocks were cut into 10, 20, and 40 µm thick sections and analyzed by SEM. In addition, seminiferous tubule and lumen diameter and germinative epithelium height were measured in 10 and 20 µm thick paraffin sections. Measurements from 10 and 20 µm thick paraffin sections showed that the height of the germinative epithelium and the diameter of the lumen and tubules were similar between cats and dog…

The Public Health Risks of Colistin Resistance in Dogs and Cats: A One Health Perspective Review.

Colistin, a polymyxin antibiotic considered a last-line treatment for multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections, has been widely used in livestock, promoting resistance in bacterial populations that can disseminate through the environment. Although rarely used in companion animals, dogs and cats can acquire and spread colistin-resistant strains through shared environments, acting as potential reservoirs of resistance. Reliable detection of resistant strains remains challenging due to technical limitations of routine susceptibility tests. Despite these constraints, epidemiological studies de…

Comparative Diagnostic Accuracy of Pleural Effusion Classification Methods in Cats: An Analysis of Naturally Occurring Cases.

BACKGROUND: Pleural effusion (PE) in cats can result from transudative or exudative processes. Transudates are caused by decreased colloid osmotic pressure (↓COP) or elevated hydrostatic pressure (↑HP) gradient, while exudates arise from increased pleural capillary permeability. Diagnostic classification approaches traditionally rely on pleural effusion total protein (TPPE) and total nucleated cell counts (TNCCPE). In contrast, Light's criteria employing pleural effusion lactate dehydrogenase (LDHPE), LDHPE divided by serum LDH (LDHratio), and pleural effusion to serum protein ratio (TPratio) …

Alterations in gut-derived uremic toxins before the onset of azotemic chronic kidney disease in cats.

BACKGROUND: Although gut-derived uremic toxins are increased in azotemic chronic kidney disease (CKD) in cats and implicated in disease progression, it remains unclear if augmented formation or retention of these toxins is associated with the development of renal azotemia. OBJECTIVES: Assess the association between gut-derived toxins (ie, indoxyl-sulfate, p-cresyl-sulfate, and trimethylamine-N-oxide [TMAO]) and the onset of azotemic CKD in cats. ANIMALS: Forty-eight client-owned cats. METHODS: Nested case-control study, comparing serum and urine gut-derived uremic toxin abundance at 6-month…

A New, Easy-to-Learn, Fear-Free Method to Stop Purring During Cardiac Auscultation in Cats.

BACKGROUND: Purring in cats can interfere with cardiac auscultation. If the produced noise is loud enough, purring makes it impossible to perform a meaningful auscultation as it is much louder than heart sounds and murmurs. Our study introduced and tested a new, simple, fear-free, cat-friendly method to stop purring during auscultation. METHODS: The technique involves grasping the cat's larynx from ventral with one hand, while simultaneously holding the stethoscope in the other hand to perform the auscultation. RESULTS: The incidence of purring was evaluated in 582 cats, in a veterinary teac…

Detection of Felis catus papillomavirus-derived genes in squamous cell carcinoma tissues in cats in Japan.

Felis catus papillomavirus (FcaPV) was first discovered in 2002. Seven genotypes (FcaPV-1/-2/-3/-4/-5/-6/-7) have been reported to date, at least one of which (FcaPV-2) is suggested to be implicated in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC); however, relevant epidemiological data on Japanese cats are limited. There is one report on relatively low FcaPV-2 prevalence in cats with SCC, largely in the Tokyo region. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of each FcaPV genotype in cats with SCC largely drawn from a peripheral region of Japan (Kyushu). Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) specimens …

Cellular and humoral immune responses in cats vaccinated with feline herpesvirus 1 modified live virus vaccine.

Feline herpesvirus 1 (FHV-1) is an important pathogen causing infectious rhinotracheitis in felids, mainly infecting the upper respiratory tract and conjunctiva. Multiple vaccines are available to prevent FHV-1 infection, and the antibody levels are always used to evaluate their effectiveness. However, the cellular immunity response following immunization in cats remains unclear. This study investigated the immune responses (humoral and cellular) in cats immunized with the FHV-1 modified live virus vaccine. The results indicated that vaccination significantly reduced clinical signs, and antibo…

The Development of TIM-Barrel Based Multi-Epitope Protein for Toxoplasma gondii Serological Detection in Cats.

Toxoplasma gondii, a pathogen of significant concern in animal production, companion animal health, and public health, particularly affects immunocompromised individuals and pregnant women. Current diagnostic techniques employ both direct and indirect methods, with serological assays widely used for detecting T. gondii infections in humans and animals. In this study, the TIM-barrel structure of Br2 β-glucosidase was engineered to create 10 chimeric multi-epitope proteins for T. gondii serological detection. Indirect ELISA screening identified three promising candidate proteins, V4Z, SFF, and S
