Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Headaches Among Children: A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: This cross-sectional study examined the association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and history of frequent headaches (including migraine) among children 3-17 years old using data from the 2016 and 2017 U.S. National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH). BACKGROUND: ACEs include abuse (physical, emotional, or sexual), parental divorce, death, mental illness, or addiction, and are linked to higher morbidity and mortality in adulthood. A relationship between ACEs and headaches exists among adults, but studies examining the relationship among children are lacking. To our k

25-Year outcomes following the regionalization of three competing pediatric cardiac surgery programs.

OBJECTIVE: The concept of regionalizing pediatric cardiac surgery centers to elevate care, increase surgeon volume, and improve outcomes has been discussed for several decades. We examined the outcomes after regionalizing 3 competing pediatric cardiac surgery programs. METHODS: The procedures from children (<18 years of age) requiring pediatric cardiac surgery between 1991 and 2024 were divided into 2 groups: (1) preregionalization (1991-1998) when surgery was performed by 3 independent programs (Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester) and (2) regionalization (2000-2024) when surgery was performed by 1

Readmissions Following Congenital Heart Surgery in Infants and Children.

Thirty-day readmission after congenital heart surgery (CHS) is an important outcome given the vulnerability of pediatric patients. We hypothesized that readmissions after pediatric CHS are common and identifiable risk factors exist. We obtained State Inpatient Databases for Washington, New York, Florida, and California and selected CHS admissions age < 19 years. The main outcome was readmission defined as non-elective hospitalization < 31 days of discharge from index CHS admission. In multivariable analyses using generalized estimating equations, we examined associations of patient-level chara

Epilepsy and seizure-related deaths: Mortality statistics do not tell the complete story.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of the study was to identify where epilepsy or seizures may be the underlying cause of death but not identified by the death certification process in the Australian coronial system and to better characterize such deaths. METHODS: Australian National Coronial Information System (NCIS) closed cases for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) (population average 348,000) over 13 years were searched using cause of death, and a text search of police and autopsy reports, to identify all deaths where epilepsy or seizures were mentioned. Deaths where the underlying cause of

[All-cause mortality from 1970 to 2013 in the municipality of Trino (Piedmont region, Italy), previously home to a nuclear plant].

Mortality studies conducted to date in the area of Trino (Piedmont Region, northern Italy) have been limited to the years from 2000 onwards. These studies have highlighted an increased frequency of brain tumors, leukemia, mesothelioma, peritoneal, prostate, larynx and total tumors in men in the municipality of Trino while for women the increased risk was limited to melanoma. The present study has allowed us to make more robust epidemiological considerations and to analyze the historical trend in mortality in the municipality (starting from 1970) correlating it also to the social and economic c

In- and Out-of-hospital Mortality Associated with Seasonal and Pandemic Influenza and Respiratory Syncytial Virus in South Africa, 2009-2013.

BACKGROUND: Estimates of influenza- and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-associated mortality burden are important to guide policy for control. Data are limited on the contribution of out-of-hospital deaths to this mortality. METHODS: We modeled excess mortality attributable to influenza and RSV infection by applying regression models to weekly deaths from national vital statistics from 2009 through 2013, using influenza and RSV laboratory surveillance data as covariates. We fitted separate models for in- and out-of-hospital deaths. RESULTS: There were 509791 average annual deaths in South

Efficacy of pre-hospital rapid sequence intubation in paediatric traumatic brain injury: A 9-year observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Prehospital airway management of the paediatric patient with traumatic brain injury (TBI) is controversial. Endotracheal intubation of children in the field requires specific skills and has potential benefits but also carries potentially serious complications. We aimed to compare mortality and functional outcomes after six months between children with TBI who either underwent prehospital rapid sequence intubation (RSI) by trained Intensive Care paramedics (ICP) or received no intubation. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of patients aged ≤14 years with suspected TBI in
