BACKGROUND: Specifying early developmental differences among neurodevelopmental disorders with distinct etiologies is critical to improving early identification and tailored intervention during the first years of life. Recent studies have uncovered important differences between infants with fragile X syndrome (FXS) and infants with familial history of autism spectrum disorder who go on to develop autism themselves (FH-ASD), including differences in brain development and behavior. Thus far, there have been no studies longitudinally investigating differential developmental skill profiles in FXS

We review the literature on various strategies to augment cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Although traditional pharmacotherapy has only a small additive effect, research demonstrates that it is possible to select interventions that potentiate known mechanisms of CBT. D-cycloserine appears to potentiate activity at the N-methyl D-ethyl aspartate receptor and thereby facilitates fear extinction. Exercise may increase neural plasticity and thereby increase the efficacy of CBT for depression and anxiety. Noninvasive brain stimulation is thought to target the specific cortical regions needed fo

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) encompasses various psychological symptoms and a high early dropout rate due to treatment unresponsiveness. In recent years, neurofeedback has been implemented to control PTSD's psychological symptoms through physiological brain regulation. However, a comprehensive analysis concerning its efficacy is lacking. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine neurofeedback's effect on reducing PTSD symptoms. We analyzed randomized and non-randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from 1990 to July 2020, evaluating neurofeedback treatments

BACKGROUND: The acquired brain damage is a common neurological disorder.
OBJECTIVE: Determine the probabilistic intersections of variables related to acquired brain damage from the determination of a priori and a posteriori probabilities.
METHOD: Analytical retrospective study. A descriptive analysis was carried out, confidence intervals were calculated to obtain the mean and the proportion with α = 0.05 considering the age of the patient and the diagnosis. An analysis of probabilistic intersection, a priori and a posteriori probability was performed considering diagnosis, sex and age decade

Anxiety and depressive disorders are characterized with frequent co-occurance. Depression comorbid to anxiety disorder increases severity of main disorder, aggravates it`s clinical course, worsens social functioning of the patients and decreases life quality, results resistance to therapy and increases the probability of suicidal attempts. In patients with depressive disorders onset of anxiety disorder results increased severity of disorder and decrease in quality of remission. There are different opinions on nature and phenomenology of comorbidity of anxiety and depressive disorders. There ar

If the negative emotions experienced in life become trauma, they affect daily life. Neuro-feedback technology has recently been introduced as a treatment, but many different neuro-feedback protocols and methods exits. This study conducted a meta-analysis of neuro-feedback training for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms to evaluate the effects of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalogram (EEG)-based neuro-feedback training. A search of PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Science Direct, and ClinicalTrials.gov was conducted from January 2011 to D

Person-oriented analyses are commonly used to identify subgroups of children with mental health conditions in the hopes that they will meaningfully inform the taxonomy, assessment, and treatment of psychological disorder. However, whether these data-driven groups are demonstrably better at predicting important aspects of adaptive functioning than standard DSM taxonomy has not been established. Using Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity-Disorder (ADHD) as a model condition, we utilized dimensions of personality and cognitive ability to identify person-centered profiles of school-aged children (N=246

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that childhood trauma contributes to the onset and maintenance of psychosis. However, few studies have accounted for the effects of lifetime trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and none have examined the mediating role of emotion dysregulation in symptom maintenance after severe trauma. The purpose of this study is to determine whether maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies (CERS) and global emotion dysregulation mediate the effects of probable PTSD on depressive symptoms, and whether this pathway extends to influence positive

During our everyday lives, we are confronted with a vast amount of information from several sensory modalities. This multisensory information needs to be appropriately integrated for us to effectively engage with and learn from our world. Research carried out over the last half century has provided new insights into the way such multisensory processing improves human performance and perception; the neurophysiological foundations of multisensory function; the time course for its development; how multisensory abilities differ in clinical populations; and, most recently, the links between multise

Binge eating disorder (BED) is the most common type of eating disorder. According to the most recent data available, the estimated lifetime prevalence of BED among US adults in the general population is 0.85% (men 0.42% and women 1.25%). Among psychiatric treatment populations, prevalence is several-fold higher. Although many people with BED are obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2), roughly half are not. In the DSM-5, BED is defined by recurrent episodes of binge eating (eating in a discrete period of time, an amount of food larger than most people would eat in a similar amount of time under similar circums

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that dementia is caused by neuronal damage due to chronic inflammation from peripheral sources such as the oral cavity in periodontal disease.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of our review was to assess the risk of dementia or cognitive impairment associated with chronic periodontitis and multiple tooth loss.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An extensive search of electronic databases of articles on the relation between periodontitis, tooth loss and dementia published on or before April 2016 was conducted. Experimental and human studies that provided a description consistent with

BACKGROUND: Huntington Disease-like 2 (HDL2) is a neurodegenerative disorder similar to Huntington Disease (HD) in its clinical phenotype, genetic characteristics, neuropathology and longitudinal progression. Proposed specific differences include an exclusive African ancestry, lack of eye movement abnormalities, increased Parkinsonism, and acanthocytes in HDL2.
OBJECTIVE: The objective was to determine the similarities and differences between HD and HDL2 by establishing the clinical phenotype of HDL2 with the published cases.
METHODS: A literature review of all clinically described cases of

Vascular dementia is an umbrella term, encompassing the pathological changes in the brain due to cerebrovascular disease that result in dementia. Vascular dementia is the second most common form of dementia, after Alzheimer's disease. In this paper, I outline the concept of vascular dementia, the key aspects of the disease that are yet to be clarified, and the current status of clinical trials. Assessing these factors, I discuss how treatable vascular dementia presently is. Use of the term'vascular dementia'is riddled with uncertainties regarding disease classification, and non-standardized di

The present review attempts to put together the available evidence and potential research paradigms at the interface of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), sleep micro- and macrostructure, cerebral vasoreactivity and cognitive neuroscience. Besides the significant health-related consequences of OSAS including hypertension, increased risk of cardio- and cerebrovascular events, notable neurocognitive lapses and excessive daytime somnolence are considered as potential burdens. The intermittent nocturnal hypoxia and hypercapnia which occur in OSAS are known to affect cerebral circulation and

Controversy exists about residual symptoms after pharmacological treatment of Lyme neuroborreliosis. Reports of disabling long-term sequels lead to concerns in patients and health care providers. We systematically reviewed the available evidence from studies reporting treatment of Lyme neuroborreliosis to assess the prevalence and spectrum of residual symptoms after treatment. A literature search was performed in three databases and three clinical trial registers to find eligible studies reporting on residual symptoms in patients after pharmacological treatment of LNB. Diagnosis must have been

Cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the Western world, with a considerably higher prevalence observed in schizophrenia compared to the general population. Despite the negative health consequences of smoking heavily, it has been proposed that individuals with schizophrenia may maintain smoking behaviors to remediate symptoms associated with the disorder. Neurocognitive deficits are a core feature of schizophrenia and are present in approximately 80% of patients. Further, these deficits constitute an endophenotype of schizophrenia, as they are stable across disease pha

Patients with REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) enact violent dreams during REM sleep in the absence of normal muscle atonia. This disorder is highly frequent in patients with synucleinopathies (60%-100% of patients) and rare in patients with other neurodegenerative disorders. The disorder is detected by interview plus video and sleep monitoring. Abnormal movements expose the patients and bed partners to a high risk of injury and sleep disruption. The disorder is usually alleviated with melatonin and clonazepam. Limb movements are mainly minor, jerky, fast, pseudohallucinatory, and repeated, w

The signature symptom of alcohol-induced persisting amnestic disorder, more commonly referred to as alcoholic Korsakoff's syndrome (KS), is anterograde amnesia, or memory loss for recent events, and until the mid 20th Century, the putative brain damage was considered to be in diencephalic and medial temporal lobe structures. Overall intelligence, as measured by standardized IQ tests, usually remains intact. Preservation of IQ occurs because memories formed before the onset of prolonged heavy drinking--the types of information and abilities tapped by intelligence tests--remain relatively well p

Difficulty discarding and excessive acquiring can be treated using specialized cognitive-behavioral treatment that includes motivational interviewing, skills training, practice sorting and discarding, and cognitive restructuring. Early psychotherapy efforts to treat hoarding have proved less effective than this combination of methods targeted at the characteristic features of hoarding. Treatment strategies are illustrated through a case example of a woman struggling with both hoarding and contamination concerns.
