Healing our intergenerational wounds: a praxis of community healing envisioned by refugee young adults engaging in participatory avatar-based community circles.

Refugee communities across the world have long gathered to connect and support one another during times of crisis, and this has been well-documented. Despite the vast amount of literature pertaining to coping and resiliency among refugee communities, there is limited knowledge about refugee community healing. Approximately one in three refugees experiences depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress that can persist long after displacement. Dominant approaches within Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic (WEIRD) psychologies tend to conceptualize trauma through an individualist

Knowledge and Awareness of HPV, the HPV Vaccine, and Cervical Cancer Among Women From a Brazilian Community: A Community-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cervical cancer (CC) remains a major public health problem despite effective screening and vaccination strategies. This study aimed to assess women's knowledge and awareness of human papillomavirus (HPV), HPV vaccination, and CC in a Brazilian community-based Family Health Strategy/Primary Health Care (FHS/PHC) setting, and to evaluate factors associated with knowledge of HPV transmission, awareness of the HPV-CC association, and certainty about vaccinating children against HPV. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted from August 2023 to February 2

Community-driven secondary distribution of COVID-19 rapid antigen home tests in high-vulnerability Chicago neighborhoods: a community case study.

African American communities on Chicago's South and West Sides, many facing high levels of social vulnerability, experienced disproportionate COVID-19 burden driven in part by limited access to diagnostic testing early in the pandemic. In partnership with the Alive Faith Network (AFN), a longstanding coalition of African American churches and academic partners, we implemented a participant-driven model to expand access to rapid antigen home tests during October 2021-August 2022. Community members distributed 8,386 rapid antigen home tests through their social networks, reaching many individual

Enhancement of community productivity and water‑air‑interface greenhouse gas uptake by plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria inoculation in submerged macrophyte communities.

Enhancing lake carbon sequestration is a vital nature-based climate solution, whereas the degradation of submerged macrophytes seriously threatens this potential. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are capable of accelerating the stress recovery of submerged macrophytes and enhancing the greenhouse gas (GHG) absorption for single-species macrophyte. Here, four-species submerged macrophyte communities (Potamogeton wrightii, Myriophyllum spicatum, Vallisneria denseserrulata, and Hydrilla verticillata) were established under simulated underwater low-light conditions and inoculated with a

Beyond co-creation: why community-centered research ecosystems and advancing community research capacity building is implementation science's next frontier.

Implementation science has increasingly embraced community engagement through co-creation and community-based participatory research, yet capacity for conducting implementation research itself remains concentrated within academic institutions. This commentary argues that current approaches perpetuate structural dependencies where communities require academic intermediaries to validate knowledge about their own contexts. While implementation science invests substantially in capacity development for practitioners and researchers through training institutes and mentorship programs, these opportun

A community-focused rural academic health department model in North Carolina: elevating community engagement, rural public health practice and research.

INTRODUCTION: In decentralized public health systems, rural public health departments have fewer economic resources and higher needs for public health programs and services. This case study describes the evolution of a rural district health department's community and academic partnerships across three phases. Throughout this process, partnerships grounded in community engagement informed the local public health workforce, translated research into practice, and supported the design, implementation, and evaluation of interventions in a rural setting. METHODS: Our approach is guided by three est

Community-wide deworming strategies to reduce high hookworm burden in endemic communities: Results from a cluster randomized trial in Southern India.

OBJECTIVES: Targeted deworming of high-risk groups (usually school-based programs), although effective in controlling morbidity, may not be sufficient to reduce hookworm burden in endemic communities due to the persistence of infection in the adult population. The effectiveness of community-wide mass drug administration (MDA) strategies were evaluated in a hookworm-endemic tribal community in southern India. METHODS: In this open-label, cluster-randomized community-intervention trial, 45 villages comprising of 2770 households were randomly assigned (1:1:1) to receive community-wide MDA with a

Integrating Community Practices, Vector Resistance, and Molecular Xenomonitoring of Wuchereria Bancrofti: A One Health Implementation Study in Lymphatic Filariasis-Endemic Communities.

PURPOSE: Lymphatic filariasis (LF), caused primarily by Wuchereria bancrofti and transmitted by mosquitoes, remains a public health challenge in Nigeria. Insecticides and insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are used as control measures. However, limited public awareness and widespread insecticide resistance impede elimination. Molecular xenomonitoring is essential for detecting active transmission and determining when it is halted. This study assessed community knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAPs) on LF, insecticide resistance, and xenomonitoring of W. bancrofti in Bodinga Local Government A

What do Providers and Community Members Think About Disease Intervention Specialists?: Provider and Community Member Assessments in New York City.

BACKGROUND: Disease intervention specialists (DIS) effectively interrupt population-level spread of diseases including sexually transmitted infections. Healthcare provider and patient engagement is critical to DIS' success. Few studies have examined attitudes towards DIS among these groups. METHODS: We invited 634 providers from STI, human immunodeficiency virus, and viral hepatitis partnerships with the New York City (NYC) Health Department and 412 members of a NYC Health Department-led community advisory group, to take provider and community surveys regarding awareness, perceptions, and exp

The etiology of exudative cutaneous ulcers in a yaws-endemic community prior to receipt of antimicrobials is similar to that found in communities after mass treatment with azithromycin.

Mass drug administration (MDA) of azithromycin (AZ) and case finding and treatment of children with cutaneous ulcers (CUs) have been trialed as strategies to eliminate yaws. Metagenomic sequencing of CU swabs obtained from children 3 to 4 years after the initiation of a yaws elimination campaign on Lihir Island showed enrichment for Treponema pallidum subsp. pertenue (TPE), Haemophilus ducreyi (HD), Streptococcus pyogenes (SP), and several anaerobic bacteria. Whether these results were influenced by AZ pressure or are generalizable to other populations is unknown. Here, we performed quantitati

Harambee! 2.0: Community resources and resilience factors to leverage for improving HIV testing behaviors among African immigrant communities in Seattle, Washington.

Significant challenges promoting positive HIV testing behaviors among African immigrant communities in the U.S. persist, though existing community resources may be leveraged to improving these behaviors and increasing testing uptake. We conducted 30 key informant interviews and five focus group discussions (n = total 72 participants) among members of the Ethiopian, Somali, and Eritrean communities in Seattle, WA to identify these resources. Our findings highlight the following three main themes for responsive interventions: (1) capitalize on religious leaders and institutions as key facilitato

Communication access, public health information sources, and language preference during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indigenous communities in Northwest Territories, Canada.

Participants (n = 287; 31.1% male; mean age 41.6 years, SD = 13.5) reported accessing three main forms of communication: radio (84.7%), the internet (80.5%), and cable television (71.8%). Some participants (19.5%) reported having no internet access at home. Participants' main sources of COVID-19 information were websites (35.3%), social media (26.5%), and the news delivered via television or newspaper (48.4%). Only 11.0% of participants acquired information from healthcare workers. Some participants (9.9%) preferred to receive information in the traditional languages of the Dene (Dene Ked'e, T

Building Capacity for Community-Based Kidney Health Screening: A Multi-Site Quality Improvement Initiative through the Community Kidney Health Network.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) disproportionately affects communities with limited access to screening and preventive care. While programs such as the Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP) and the Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness Program (KDSAP) have demonstrated the feasibility of community-based kidney health initiatives, a gap remains in nurse-led models that explicitly leverage the expertise of registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) combined with quality improvement principles. The Community Kidney Health Network (CKHN) was piloted to evaluate the feasibility and scalab

Use of UK faith Centre as a COVID-19 community vaccination clinic: exploring a potential model for community-based health care delivery.

INTRODUCTION: Effective and safe vaccines against COVID-19 are essential to achieve global control of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). Using faith centres may offer a promising route for promoting higher vaccine uptake from certain minority ethnic groups known to be more likely to be vaccine hesitant. METHODS: This cross-sectional study explored attendees' perceptions, experiences of being offered, and receiving COVID-19 vaccination in a local mosque in Woking, Surrey, UK. About 199 attendees completed a brief questionnaire on experiences, views, motivations about attending the mosque and vaccin

Communities organizing to promote equity: engaging local communities in public health responses to health inequities exacerbated by COVID-19-protocol paper.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted rural and under-resourced urban communities in Kansas. The state's response to COVID-19 has relied on a highly decentralized and underfunded public health system, with 100 local health departments in the state, few of which had prior experience engaging local community coalitions in a coordinated response to a public health crisis. METHODS: To improve the capacity for local community-driven responses to COVID-19 and other public health needs, the University of Kansas Medical Center, in partnership with the Kansas Department of
