Human enteroviruses (EVs) and parechoviruses (HPeVs) are important etiological agents causing infections such as meningitis, encephalitis and sepsis-like disease in neonates and young children. BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of blindness in working age adults. Approximately 95% of patients with Type 1 diabetes develop some degree of retinopathy within 25 years of diagnosis despite normalization of blood glucose by insulin therapy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of genital human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in asymptomatic women, using the HPV DNA Hybrid Capture 2 (HC2) test. Three hundred and two women who attended the Out-Patient Gynecological Clinic of a tertiary level hospital, in a Venezuelan urban area, were selected for the study. Cerebrospinal fluids from 54 children with meningitis syndrome were examined for the presence of enteroviruses by cell culture, by enzymatic amplification of viral cDNA and by hybridization. Viral sequences were found in 37/39 CSF specimens positive by cell culture (95%) and in 6/15 (40%) CSF specimens negative by cell culture. Thus, PCR, as a specific and sensitive technique, may be suitable for rapid diagnosis of enteroviral meningitis in clinical specimens from which enteroviruses are difficult to isolate.

HLA-DP polymorphism was examined in 71 rheumatoid arthritis patients and 148 controls, using dot-blot analysis with 14 synthetic oligonucleotide probes specific for the variable region of the DPB1 second exon.
