Thyroid autoimmunity in bipolar disorder: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence points to the pathophysiological relevance between immune dysfunction and mood disorders. High rates of thyroid dysfunction have been found in patients with bipolar disorder (BD), compared to the general population. A systematic review of the relationship between BD and thyroid autoimmunity was performed. METHODS: Pubmed, EMBASE and PsycINFO databases were searched up till January 28th, 2017. This review has been conducted according to the PRISMA statements. Observational studies clearly reporting data among BD patients and the frequency of autoimmune thyroid

Histone Lysine Methylases and Demethylases in the Landscape of Human Developmental Disorders.

Histone lysine methyltransferases (KMTs) and demethylases (KDMs) underpin gene regulation. Here we demonstrate that variants causing haploinsufficiency of KMTs and KDMs are frequently encountered in individuals with developmental disorders. Using a combination of human variation databases and existing animal models, we determine 22 KMTs and KDMs as additional candidates for dominantly inherited developmental disorders. We show that KMTs and KDMs that are associated with, or are candidates for, dominant developmental disorders tend to have a higher level of transcription, longer canonical trans

The possible role of human papillomavirus infection in the development of lichen sclerosus.

Lichen sclerosus (LS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease of unknown origin predominantly affecting the anogenital area that causes pruritus and pain and is associated with an increased risk of malignancy. In some cases, LS vanishes after application of imiquimod, raising the question whether human papillomavirus (HPV) may have an etiopathogenic role in anogenital LS. The databases MEDLINE and Embase were systematically searched using the PRISMA guidelines. Twenty-seven papers were included that reported the prevalence of HPV in LS and in LS associated with neoplasia. HPV was identified in

Molecular Characterization of Hemorrhagic Enteritis Viruses (HEV) Detected in HEV-Vaccinated Commercial Turkey Flocks in Germany.

Despite the application of live hemorrhagic enteritis virus (HEV) vaccines, HEV field outbreaks are suspected to still occur in turkey flocks in Germany. Increasing secondary bacterial infections in HEV-vaccinated flocks suggest that vaccines may be losing efficacy or, possibly, that vaccine strains are causing disease. Thus, the goal of the current study was to investigate the diversity of HEV isolates from fattening turkey flocks between 2008 and 2012 by characterizing the open reading frame (ORF)1 gene at its 5' and 3' ends. Analyses of ORF1 sequences of field isolates and comparison with s

Early detection of bilateral cataracts in utero may represent a manifestation of severe congenital disease.

We observed bilateral cataracts on second trimester ultrasound, in two consecutive pregnancies, with no other structural defects detected. The parents were unrelated and had no family history for the disease. The first pregnancy was terminated in week 22. Copy number variation analysis revealed, in both the aborted fetus and the mother, a 495 kb duplication at 22q11.23 encompassing CRYBB3 and CRYBB2, and not present in variation databases. In the second pregnancy, lens hyperechogenicity was detected by ultrasound at week 13 and 4 days. The identical duplication at 22q11.23 was found in the fet

Hypomorphic variants of cationic amino acid transporter 3 in males with autism spectrum disorders.

Cationic amino acid transporters (CATs) mediate the entry of L-type cationic amino acids (arginine, ornithine and lysine) into the cells including neurons. CAT-3, encoded by the SLC7A3 gene on chromosome X, is one of the three CATs present in the human genome, with selective expression in brain. SLC7A3 is highly intolerant to variation in humans, as attested by the low frequency of deleterious variants in available databases, but the impact on variants in this gene in humans remains undefined. In this study, we identified a missense variant in SLC7A3, encoding the CAT-3 cationic amino acid tra

Undiagnosed metabolic dysfunction and sudden infant death syndrome--a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Decades of research has yielded few clues about causes of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). While some studies have shown a link to inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs), few have examined the link in a large population-based sample. This population-based case-control study assessed the association between undiagnosed IEMs and SIDS. METHODS: Children born in California during 2005-08 who died from SIDS were obtained from death records and linked to the newborn screening, birth certificate, and hospital discharge databases. Individuals with known chromosomal and neural tube defects

Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene A1298C polymorphism and susceptibility to recurrent pregnancy loss: a meta-analysis.

Environmental and genetic factors are thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL)/spontaneous abortions (SA), which include endocrine, anatomical abnormalities within the genital organs, autoimmune diseases and some gene variants. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is a key enzyme of the folate/methionine metabolic pathway and it is well established fact that folate deficiency causes pregnancy complications like recurrent pregnancy loss, preeclempsia and birth defects affected pregnancies. MTHFR A1298C polymorphism reduces the enzymatic activity and mi

A systematic review of factors influencing uptake of invasive fetal genetic testing by pregnant women of advanced maternal age.

Women of advanced maternal age have a higher risk of having a child affected by a chromosomal disorder than younger childbearing women and are frequently offered invasive testing during pregnancy. The aim of our systematic review was to identify and analyse the current evidence base regarding factors that influence the uptake of invasive fetal testing by pregnant women of advanced maternal age. We conducted a systematic review. A search of The Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Embase and Medline databases was undertaken for papers published in English and Italian from January 2002 to May 2012. NaV1.7, 1.8 and 1.9 mutations linked to painful channelopathies have no pain phenotype in UK Biobank.

The voltage-gated sodium channels NaV1.7, NaV1.8 and NaV1.9, encoded by the SCN9A, SCN10A and SCN11A genes, respectively, are integral to nociceptor excitability and pain sensation. Multiple gain-of-function mutations in these ion channels have been reported to cause autosomal dominant painful channelopathies, including primary erythromelalgia, paroxysmal extreme pain disorder and familial episodic pain. Conversely, autosomal recessive loss-of-function mutations in NaV1.7 have been reported to cause painless channelopathies. The prevalence and impact on carriers of these voltage-gated sodium c

Bibliometric Analysis of Publications on Prenatal Genetic Screening Using Cell-Free DNA.

Prenatal genetic testing plays a vital role in the early detection of fetal chromosomal abnormalities, with cell-free DNA (cfDNA) testing emerging as a highly accurate noninvasive screening method. By analyzing fetal DNA fragments in maternal plasma, cfDNA-based tests have significantly improved the detection of conditions such as trisomies.  Bibliometric analysis is a quantitative research method used to evaluate publication trends, citation patterns, and research impact within a specific scientific field. By analyzing bibliographic data, it provides insights into scholarly productivity, infl

Causal relationship between sarcopenia and cognitive performance: A bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

With the acceleration of global population aging, sarcopenia (SA) and cognitive impairment have become major public health concerns. Observational studies suggest associations between them, but such findings may be biased by confounding and reverse causation. Previous Mendelian randomization (MR) studies have yielded inconsistent results. Therefore, this study applied a bidirectional MR design to clarify their causal relationships. We obtained genetic instrumental variables for SA-related traits, including hand grip strength, lean mass, and usual walking pace, from the UK Biobank. Data on cogn
