The effect of moderate and excessive alcohol use on the course and outcome of patients with bipolar disorders: a prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Comorbid alcohol use disorders (AUDs) are frequently associated with negative effects on course and outcome of bipolar disorder. … ociodemographic and clinical characteristics at baseline were significantly different between the 3 drinking groups, with the exception of-and as a consequence of the group assignment-the prevalence of lifetime and current diagnosis of AUD. Also, no differences between the 3 drinking groups were found on any of the clinical outcome variables, ie, number of …

Effects of acamprosate on ethanol-seeking and self-administration in the rat.

BACKGROUND: Acamprosate (calcium acetyl homotaurinate) has been used clinically to treat relapse in alcoholics. In rats, it has been shown to decrease ethanol, but not water, self-administration after ethanol deprivation. METHODS: To further investigate the effect of acamprosate on reinforced behaviors in rats, the present experiment used: (1) both ethanol and sucrose reinforcer solutions to better assess the distinct effects of acamprosate on ethanol-directed behaviors, and (2) an operant model that procedurally separates the "cost" to begin drinking from consuming the reinforcer solutions t…

Correlates of Sexual Victimization Among Community College Women.

The current study documents the correlates associated with the severity of sexual victimization among women enrolled in a 2-year community college. Comparisons between women with a history of severe sexual victimization (i.e., rape and attempted rape), moderate sexual victimization (i.e., unwanted contact and sexual coercion), and no history of sexual victimization revealed that women with a history of severe sexual victimization endorsed more drinks per week, increased problem drinking behavior, and more use of drug before sex and higher levels of self-protective dating behaviors compared wit…

Driving the message home: black cabs half painted as ambulances have hit the streets in Birmingham, Liverpool, London and Manchester as part of the government's latest Know Your Limits safer drinking publicity campaign. The taxis form part of a wider advertising effort that also includes a fleet of 1,000 buses emblazoned with a bus route style map. Using the same 'Don't let a good night turn into a bad one' strapline, the journey depicted on the side of the buses terminates at an A&E department. Home Office minister Vernon Coaker (pictured) said: 'At this time of year when people will be out h…

Prevalence of alcohol related brain damage among homeless hostel dwellers in Glasgow.

BACKGROUND: Over half of Glasgow's 4000 homeless people drink hazardously but the prevalence of alcohol-related brain damage (ARBD) has not been described. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of ARBD among homeless hostel dwellers in Glasgow. METHODS: A representative sample of homeless hostel dwellers was surveyed using validated survey instruments and clinical assessment. RESULTS: From a sample of 266 hostel dwellers, 82% had cognitive impairment and 78% were drinking hazardously. The prevalence of ARBD among homeless hostel dwellers was 21%. CONCLUSIONS: ARBD has a high pre…

Comparison of the sensitivity of C57BL/6J and AKR/J mice to airborne molecules of isovaleric acid and amyl acetate.

Wysocki et al. (1977) have previously compared the abilities of several inbred strains of mice to avoid odorized drinks after odor-aversion conditioning and have proposed C57BL/6 mice as an animal model to study the specific anosmia to isovaleric acid. We have compared the olfactory performances of C57BL/6J mice and AKR/J mice using one-bottle and two-bottle tests to study the latencies of contacts with odorized or control drinks after odor-aversion conditioning. In both inbred strains, sensitivities to airborne molecules of amyl acetate (control odor) or isovaleric acid are demonstrated. Diff

The blood alcohol curve as a function of time and type of beverage: methodological considerations.

Six male subjects came to the laboratory on three different occasions and drank either spirits, wine, or beer. The spirits drink contained 1.0 ml of pure alcohol/kg body wt. and the other two drinks were 20% larger. The blood alcohol curve was monitored every 15 min. The mean peak level was roughly the same for the three types of beverages although the peak was reached later for wine and beer. For spirits and beer the curve dropped off smoothly after the peak was reached while for wine the peak level was maintained for about 60 min. Individual curves varied greatly for all three beverage types

Average mineral and trace element content in daily adjusted menus (DAM) of French adults.

This article is based on data on food consumption gathered from 10,000 households. The daily energetic intake of 2,000 to 2,500 kcal (8,360 to 10,450 kJ) (beverages excluded) provides adults with less than 80% of the recommended amount of several essential minerals and trace elements. For women, beverages contribute only slightly to the total amount of mineral and trace element intake, because the major beverage sources of minerals and trace elements are alcoholic drinks (wine, beer). For men, alcoholic drinks could provide an additional amount of these elements. Consequently, it seems the ris

Performance in play: stimulant exposure and broader substance-use vulnerability in mass-participation youth esports.

Youth esports now extends far beyond professional competition, encompassing ranked online play, school clubs, amateur events, livestreaming, and digitally mediated peer communities. These settings expose adolescents to energy drinks and other stimulant-containing products in contexts where alertness, concentration, and prolonged play are valued. Energy drinks merit particular attention because their prominence in gaming culture combines caffeine exposure with, for many products, substantial added sugar. Potential consequences include disrupted sleep, acute stimulant effects, and adverse nutrit

Prevalence of alcohol consumption and awareness of consumption guidelines: A population-based study in Geneva, Switzerland.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol consumption remains a major preventable cause of morbidity and mortality. In Switzerland, approximately 1500 annual deaths are attributable to alcohol. This study aimed to assess awareness of national low-risk drinking guidelines and to estimate the proportion of adults exceeding them in Geneva, according to sociodemographic and health-related factors. METHODS: In 2025, 7509 adults from the Specchio population-based cohort were invited to complete a questionnaire on alcohol consumption, knowledge of Swiss guidelines, and risk perception. Exceeding guidelines was defined as …

Does the impact of calorie (energy) labelling on food purchased in worksite cafeterias differ by food category? A mega-analysis of field trials.

Calorie labels may help limit energy intake as part of policy efforts to prevent obesity. However, evidence on their effectiveness is mixed. We hypothesised this variability may relate to differences in responsiveness to labelling by food category, e.g., main meals vs. discretionary items (e.g. snacks). Systematic searches identified randomised field studies of calorie labelling that reported energy purchased (kcal) from targeted food and drink categories (main meals, discretionary foods, soft drinks). A mega-analysis (pooling raw data from multiple studies) used generalised linear mixed model

Human NT2/D1-derived early neural progenitor cells immobilised in alginate microfibres as an in vitro 3D system for neurotoxicity testing.

We established a 3D model of human NT2/D1-derived early neural progenitor cells immobilised in alginate microfibres as a system for testing the neurotoxicity of energy drinks and their components, either alone, together, or in combination with alcohol. The in vitro system supports the retinoic acid-induced neurogenesis of NT2/D1 cells, and the proliferative capacity of the NT2/D1-derived early neural progenitor cells was maintained in the 3D environment. Cell cycle distribution and the expression of pluripotency markers (SOX2, OCT4 and NANOG), early neural markers (SOX3, PAX6 and miR-219), and

Examining the Role of Executive Functions on the Intention-Behavior Gap of Alcohol Protective Behavioral Strategy Use.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol protective behavioral strategies (PBS) are health behaviors that minimize the likelihood or severity of consequences associated with alcohol use; however, these strategies are inconsistently used. One potential explanation for this lack of consistent use is a discrepancy between the intention to drink safely and actually drinking safely, termed the intention-behavior gap. Some drinkers have the intention to drink safely but lack the ability to effectively initiate and execute the harm reduction behaviors. As such, executive functions (EF: cognitive abilities associated wi…
