Out of 486 patients with basilar skull fracture, 74 developed peripheral paralysis of the facial nerve (28 cases of early and 39 of late posttraumatic paralysis). 19 (67.8%) patients with early paralysis recovered function of the facial nerve, whereas only 9 (32.2%) with late paralysis were cured. Indications to surgical management of relevant paralyses are specified. Cases of one-stage tympanoplasty are described.

Management problems in patients with recurrent squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the external ear (pinna) have prompted a review of the management and treatment outcomes of patients who present with localized disease. We used light microscopy and computerized graphic reconstruction techniques to examine the endolymphatic duct and sac in 20 pairs of bones from patients with Menière's disease and 21 bones from controls. The diameters of the endolymphatic duct and the proximal portion of the vestibular aqueduct were significantly smaller in Menière's disease ears than in controls. Division of the great auricular nerve is commonly performed during superficial parotidectomy and leads to anaesthesia of the ear lobe. In the case presented here, this gave rise to an accidental self-inflicted thermal burn of the ear lobe. This might have been avoided had the posterior branch of the nerve been preserved.

The uptake and chemical identification of 14C-retinyl acetate in the inner ear of the guinea-pig after oral administration is reported. For methodological reasons the experiment was carried out in vitamin A-deficient guinea-pigs. In the sensory tissues a time-dependent distribution was found similar to that in other organs. A case-control study was performed on cancer of the nose, nasal cavities, middle ear and accessory sinuses from 1982 through 1984 in Hokkaido. Maxillary sinus cancer accounted for 84% of this cancer in men and 87% in women. Histologically, squamous cell cancer was observed in 91% of the men and 83% of the women. The age-standardized incidence rates of this cancer were 1.3 per 100,000 for men and 0.4 for women. These figures were compared with the age-standardized mortality rates of this cancer for 1975 and 1980 by sex.

The histological findings in the middle ear cavity of 72 infants of varying gestations, birthweights, and ages are presented. All infants died after receiving ventilatory support and oxygen for longer than 14 days. In 5 infants there was no detectable histological abnormality.
