OBJECTIVE: We studied normal F wave parameters and F wave changes in patients with longstanding facial paralysis.
SUBJECTS: Controls were 11 healthy volunteers studied to estimate normal F wave parameters. Subjects were 8 patients with Hunt's syndrome and 12 with Bell's palsy available for F wave detection among outpatients at our department between April 1999 and March 2000. Dynamic shoulder stability is dependent on muscular coordination and sensory inputs. This article is a review of the generation of the motor unit potential and modern techniques for its quantification. General comments are made on findings in neurogenic and myopathic conditions. Detailed examples are given from two pathological conditions, ALS and polymyositis. Quantitative parameters are presented and the usefulness of outliers compared to mean values is discussed.

We report three cases of survivors of chronic stroke treated with active repetitive movement training of the paretic ankle dorsiflexors mediated by intramuscular electromyographically controlled neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES). These case reports demonstrate the feasibility of using intramuscular electromyographically controlled NMES for facilitating ankle dorsiflexion recovery among survivors chronic stroke with moderate hemiplegia. Relevant issues for clinical implementation and future investigations are reviewed.

Fish fast-starts and sprints are rapid kinematic events powered by the lateral myotomal musculature. A distinction can be made between fast-starts and sprint-swimming activity. A delayed syndrome of progressive weakness has been described in survivors of paralytic poliomyelitis - "Post-Polio Muscular Atrophy (PPMA)". One proposed etiology is a drop-out of motor neurons due to increased metabolic demands of an enlarged motor unit territory. We report a patient with slowly progressive lower extremity weakness 20 years after recovery from an episode of myelopathy involving the lower lumbar and sacral segments of the spinal cord. Delayed progressive amyotrophy may complicate any significant injury to anterior horn cells.

Five cases of dermatomyositis in four Shetland sheepdog puppies and one adult bitch are described. We describe the acute development of ulnar nerve compression following carpal tunnel release in a patient with an accessory palmaris longus muscle. Although anomalous muscles in the wrist are relatively common and may produce ulnar nerve compression, this particular occurrence following carpal tunnel release has not been previously described in the literature. We theorize that the compression of the ulnar nerve proximal to Guyon's canal was caused by increased tension along the long axis of the anomalous accessory palmaris longus muscle as a consequence of transverse carpal ligament division.

Neurological symptoms after epidural anaesthesia suggest complications due to anaesthetic procedure. We report the case of a child who underwent perineal surgery in a gynaecological position under general and epidural anaesthesia, who experienced the day after surgery hypoesthesia of the whole left lower limb without any motor deficit. STUDY OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in patients with narcolepsy.
DESIGN: Using rTMS, three patients with narcolepsy and cataplexy were investigated with and without their anticataplectic medication. rTMS of the motor cortex was performed at an intensity of 110% of resting motor threshold, a frequency of 20 Hz, and a duration of 2s. EMG activity was recorded for both the right and left first dorsal interosseous muscle (FDI). Eight healthy controls were also investigated under the same conditions.
