Sports Metaresearch: An Emerging Discipline of Sport Science and Medicine.

Inadequacies in the conduct and quality of research are well established across many research domains, including sport science and medicine. Metaresearch-the practice of performing research on research-is presented as a practical vehicle for improving research quality through evaluating the research processes. This article introduces the concept of metaresearch to sport as a new sub-field of sport science. The broad types of metaresearch are introduced, with a mapping of current sports metaresearch activity across these areas. Interdisciplinary centres aimed at improving scientific quality acr

The emerging role of liver transplantation in metastatic colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer has a high global prevalence and is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death. Approximately one quarter of patients with colorectal cancer will develop metastases, most commonly to the liver, with the majority of liver metastases being unresectable and carrying a poor prognosis. Initial results from trials examining liver transplantation as a potentially curative option for isolated liver metastases from colorectal cancer have yielded promising survival outcomes as compared with standard chemotherapy. However, many of the studies are small and non-randomized with hig

Obesity: a challenge for emergency medical teams-a narrative review.

The global rise in obesity presents significant challenges for emergency medical services (EMS), particularly in prehospital care settings. This narrative review examines the multifaceted impact of obesity on emergency interventions, focusing on airway management, resuscitation, vascular access, pharmacological considerations, transport logistics, and point-of-care ultrasound. Evidence indicates that excess adipose tissue alters the biomechanics of chest compressions, increases thoracic bioimpedance during defibrillation, and complicates airway management-especially in cases when advanced airw

Microbial co-metabolism in the degradation of emerging organic pollutants.

The increasing detection of emerging organic pollutants (EOPs) in the environment raises concerns about ecological impacts and human health risks, requiring urgent research on degradation pathways and environmental fate. Microbial degradation of EOPs often proceeds concurrently with the metabolism of other pollutants and typically manifests as a co-metabolic process in environmental media. Studying the mechanism of co-metabolism can realistically simulate environmental conditions and elucidate the behavioral mechanisms and ecological impacts of EOPs. This study aims to elucidate the mechanisms

Severe mental illness, chest pain, and emergency response.

AIMS: How the prehospital chest pain triage contributes to inequities in cardiovascular outcomes remains poorly understood in patients with severe mental illness (SMI). We aimed to examine the association between SMI, emergency response, and cardiovascular health disparities in chest pain-related calls. METHODS: This registry-based cohort study included first-time chest pain-related calls to the Copenhagen Emergency Medical Services (emergency number and out-of-hours service) during the study period 2014-2018. We compared patients with SMI to patients without SMI (controls). We examined emerg

Emerging MOFs, COFs, and their derivatives for energy and environmental applications.

Traditional fossil fuels significantly contribute to energy supply, economic development, and advancements in science and technology. However, prolonged and extensive use of fossil fuels has resulted in increasingly severe environmental pollution. Consequently, it is imperative to develop new, clean, and pollution-free energy sources with high energy density and versatility as substitutes for conventional fossil fuels, although this remains a considerable challenge. Simultaneously, addressing water pollution is a critical concern. The development, design, and optimization of functional nanomat

Emerging Diagnostics and Therapies in Neuroendocrine Neoplasms: A Critical Review.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are biologically diverse tumors. This article is a critical review of recent evidence focusing on systemic therapies (through mid-2025). We summarize what is most practice-relevant and where gaps remain. In diagnosis, somatostatin-receptor PET/CT has largely replaced older scintigraphy, and adding FDG PET can flag more aggressive disease. Blood-based tests and selected tissue markers (e.g., MGMT, DAXX/ATRX/ALT) show promise but require cautious interpretation in routine care. In treatment, radioligand therapy (PRRT) is used earlier in appropriate receptor-positi

Emerging antifungal resistance in Candida parapsilosis: the end of the innocence.

Candida parapsilosis is an opportunistic yeast that was recently deemed a high- importance fungal pathogen by the World Health Organization. In fact, C. parapsilosis poses an escalating threat in healthcare settings due to its ability to adapt to diverse environments, propensity for human-to-human transmission, and capacity to develop antifungal resistance. Recent studies emphasize its rising clinical importance, particularly with the increasing resistance to antifungals and the emergence of clonal outbreaks, making it a serious threat to public health. This review provides an up-to-date synth

Severe asthma beyond bronchodilators: Emerging therapeutic approaches.

Asthma is characterized by reversible airway inflammation, obstruction, and structural remodeling, which lead to the eosinophils and lymphocytes accumulation at inflammation sites and the release of inflammatory cells, like mast cells and dendritic cells, from lungs' epithelial and smooth muscle cells that trigger the activation and release of cytokines and chemokines, attracting more cells and contributing to asthma development. Available pharmacological interventions, like bronchodilators and anti-inflammatory agents, are considered generally safe and effective to treat asthma, but many affe

Bridging the Gaps in Atrial Fibrillation Management in the Emergency Department.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) frequently presents in emergency departments (EDs), contributing significantly to adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Despite established guidelines, ED management of AF often varies, revealing important gaps in care. This review addresses specific challenges in AF management for patients in the ED, including the nuances of rate versus rhythm control, the timing of anticoagulation initiation, and patient disposition. The updated 2024 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines advocate early rhythm control for select patients while recommending rate control for others

Evaluating monocyte distribution width in pediatric emergency care.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric sepsis remains a major global health challenge, complicated by age-related variability in presentation and diagnostic uncertainty. Monocyte Distribution Width (MDW), a measure of monocyte anisocytosis automatically reported with complete blood count, has shown promise as an early biomarker for sepsis in adults. However, its clinical utility in pediatric patients remains unclear. In this study, we explored the usefulness of MDW in pediatric patients presenting to the emergency department (ED). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study of pediatric patients

Antimicrobial Resistance: An Emerging Global Threat to Modern Medicine.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) constitutes a critical challenge in contemporary healthcare. The proliferation of resistant bacteria threatens the safety of surgical procedures, cancer chemotherapy, and critical care worldwide. Increased mortality from drug-resistant infections results from both microbial adaptation and systemic deficiencies in surveillance, stewardship, and innovation. Although global awareness has increased, the development of new antibiotics remains limited, and disparities in access to effective therapies continue. Addressing this crisis requires a unified One Health approa

Emerging Therapeutics in COPD: Mapping Innovation to Treatable Traits.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a complex, heterogeneous condition characterized by diverse clinical phenotypes and underlying pathobiological mechanisms. Traditional "one-size-fits-all" management strategies have limited effectiveness in addressing this heterogeneity. The Treatable Traits (TTs) approach represents a precision medicine paradigm that targets specific, identifiable, and modifiable traits in individual patients, regardless of diagnostic labels. This paper explores the alignment between the TTs framework and emerging pharmacological therapies, with a particular foc

Emergence of a Potent AChE Inhibitor with Antioxidant and Neuroprotection Abilities.

Oxidative damage and cholinergic dysfunction are common pathological features of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Maintaining the redox balance of neurons and cholinergic signaling through antioxidants and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition may provide therapeutic benefits for AD. In this regard, we discovered three AChE inhibitors with more potency than the positive control (rivastigmine; IC50 = 24.5 μM). Among these active compounds, C5 (a flavonoid derivative) was the most potent AChE inhibitor with an IC50 of 5.02 μM, followed by C1, C6, and C2 with IC50 values of 7.94 μM, 8.13 μM, and 27.52

Towards scalable anammox: mechanistic insights and emerging strategies.

Anammox-based systems are promising wastewater treatment processes that utilize anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) bacteria to remove nitrogen. These systems offer energy-efficient and carbon-neutral alternatives to conventional biological treatments but their practical application faces challenges, including limited total nitrogen (TN)-removal efficiency and sensitivity to adverse conditions. Recent research has explored innovative strategies to overcome these limitations, such as multi-metabolic pathway coupling, integration of photocatalysis and bioelectrochemical modules, and modulatio

Endometriosis: Emerging barriers to care in sub-Saharan Africa.

Endometriosis is a leading cause of chronic pelvic pain and infertility, affecting an estimated 176 million women globally¹. In sub-Saharan Africa, its diagnosis and management remain constrained by persistent misconceptions such as the belief that endometriosis is less common among Black women, entrenched socio- cultural taboos around menstruation, limited clinical awareness, and a scarcity of high-quality research2-5. Compounding these barriers are the high costs and limited availability of traditional, invasive diagnostic methods6. Collectively, these factors contribute to the significant u
